We stayed here because it is close to family. It is a great spot for those who want an affordable place to see Hawaii. The host lives onsite and is available when needed, but not intrusive. We enjoyed our stay. Thank you Jonas and Hannah.

Sheri and her family were fabulous guests, they were easygoing and friendly, always followed house rules and just a pleasure to be around,
They even made improvements by leaving some boardgames for future guests to enjoy,
Sheri and her family are always welcome at Hookele farm
We saw this on VRBO when we got there it was as advertised very nice and relaxing Jonas was great to deal with. We ran around durning the day and hung around in the evening enjoying the patio and sounds of the frogs . If Jonas offers to take you on a tour don’t pass it up its wonderful and you see Hawaii like no other.

Disliked: Cleanliness
Needs a good cleanup.
The flooring is in poor shape. Also the sofa and chairs were dusty. Everyone who stayed there suffered from the dust and mold. There is uneven layer in flooring which not marked properly and has sharp edge that needs to be fixed. If these things are taken care of, the house is good. Outdoors are good, too.

Thanks for the nitpicking Ajit. I had to repair the plumbing due to someone in your group flushing feminine products, and the floor was damaged even more because of your group. Next time you leave a review you should consider what kind of guests you are. Unfortunately I was off island for your stay but considering you rented both places for quite a deal you should take that into consideration when writing reviews .
We cannot thank Jonas enough for making our stay so special! My husband is an amputee who uses a wheelchair sometimes. It's not easy to find a place in Hawaii that is wheelchair friendly! Jonas built a ramp for us for the one riser in the apartment! WOW! He was very accommodating to any of our needs. Ho'okele aquaponics farm is much more than just a place to stay. So much fruit! Lilikoi, bananas, pineapple, papaya and more! Not to mention the fish! There's solar tiki torches and lights around the grounds that add a cool ambiance. The place had everything I needed to cook. Beds were very comfortable. It was nice to chill in the lounge chairs in the yard. Beach gear available. I couldn't ask for more. There are a couple of other places to stay here so if you're lucky you may meet a new friend or two! Jonas told us about some cool places to explore, and even took us on a tour of fissure 8! We were lucky enough to be there for his Christmas party too. FUN! Also Aloha Fridays! We will be back!
This property was a short drive outside of Hilo, but so worth it. The property was very clean, safe, and a unique experience. Jonas and Hannah are the best hosts! They are very accommodating, gave amazing recommendations, had everything on site you would want (including snorkeling gear), and even gave us a private tour. Our experience on the big island wouldn't have been nearly as awesome had we stayed anywhere else. These two were great tour guides and very fun to be around. If you are into happy hour, interacting with your hosts, and fun adventures, I definitely recommend staying here!
We had a great stay at this property, which was a little out of the way, but great for day trips. A car is a must. From here we went to waterfalls, beaches, caves, volcanoes and farmers markets. Jonas and Hannah were lovely, friendly, laid back and knowledgeable about the area. They offered suggestions of interesting places to visit and left passion fruit and papayas that were ready to eat for us to enjoy. The place was lit up a night with solar lights. We won’t forgot seeing a glowing potato flying through the sky for fun.
Enjoyed our time with Jonas and Hannah. They were down to earth, shared some local spots to check out and even let us catch fish from their tanks! If you are looking for a mellow space to launch your island adventures from, this place is great!
It was nice & the location was good to all of the sights near Hilo.
No A/C & no washer/dryer available 24/7. Other than those amenities, the experience was GREAT!

About the host
Hosted by Jonas Molloy
I've owned the property for 18 years, and have lots of great suggestions for adventures on the island off the beaten path. As a professional boat captain in many capacities and a property manager, I seek to offer a very enjoyable experience for our guests. I have a solar installation business and build with bamboo, and am working towards living off the land as much as possible.
Why they chose this property
With a great location to many attractions, very convenient to towns for food to cook in the kitchen or on the bbq, to several restaurants, the volcanoes, shoreline, and much more. For those interested in permaculture and home food production, this is a great place to come visit or even volunteer in the garden.
What makes this property unique
I offer many insights to adventures not listed in the books or magazines. The property and house has a lot of character and is well-loved space. Locked gates provide security and a community feel to the property, yet private space.
