La Casa Vieja - Adorable Hideaway In Marathon, Texas
Take a step back in time to the Old West. It doesn't get much more atmospheric than this, folks. A real piece of West Texas history, La Casa Vieja is a gorgeously restored home in Marathon, Texas that was originally an old farmhouse built in 1917. Now, more than 100 years later, it is a beautiful little hacienda, complete with a casita at the rear of the property that can accommodate additional guests. Located at the foot of Big Bend National Park and just a few blocks from the world-famous Gage Hotel, this property is a stunner. With custom woodwork throughout, this delicately-appointed 950-square-foot home sits on a corner lot and offers a beautiful enclosed private patio/courtyard for privacy. Surrounded by pretty, native desert vegetation, the custom features of this home are far too numerous to mention. Here are a list of just some of them:
~ 10 ft. ceilings ~ Open floor plan ~ Latilla ceiling in living room featuring wood beams with corbels ~ Pressed tin tile ceiling in kitchen ~ Saltillo tile and original refinished hardwood flooring ~ Mesquite custom–built kitchen bar top ~ Kraftmaid hickory cabinets in kitchen ~ Pendant lighting ~ Tiled backsplash ~ Textured walls ~ Kiva fireplace in living room ~ Alhambra-tiled shower and Talavera-tiled sink in bathroom ~ Original, restored antique old Mexico wood church doors (1920) at front entry ~ Spacious closet ~ Private and tranquil courtyard w/additional, outdoor kiva fireplace ~ Shaded front porch ~ Flat-screen satellite TV ~ Wifi enabled
The home features evaporative cooling and heating units. A new metal fence adds privacy to this exquisite property. Other details worth mentioning include: Completely new electrical and plumbing, insulation in the flooring, walls and ceilings, gas stove and water heater, and a metal roof w/ original tin on sides.

Check-in was super easy! The house and casita were exactly what we were looking for!! We especially loved the closed in porch for our morning coffee. The location was perfect for our daily trips to explore Big Bend and Ft. Davis.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in Marathon. We couldn’t have asked for more and loved the convenience to Big Bend National Park. If we get back to this area we would definitely stay here again!
Loved the Casa! Unique property which is what drew our attention. Courtyard was wonderful, sat out there a couple of evenings. Home was very cozy, enjoyed it very much.
We absolutely loved staying at La Casa Vieja. It was very comfortable and had everything we needed. Loved the courtyard! Each night we would build a fire and enjoy the peace and quiet. We would definitely stay there again.

We are glad the guest enjoyed their stay. We wish the guest had reached out to us during their stay so we could have remediated their concern at that time. We have more towels at the property. We would’ve been happy to provide them for the guest if they had made that request. We have found that one set of towels is usually more than sufficient for most guests for a short stay. Anyway, as I say, we are glad guest enjoyed their experience.
La Casa Vieja worked out great as our home for our family trip to BBNP. The home was a great fit for my family. My teenage sons liked having the separate casita to stay in. We had great weather to hang out in the courtyard by the fireplace in the evenings.
Great base location for Big Bend National Park and Alpine. We enjoyed the courtyard & the quiet neighborhood!

About the host
Hosted by Spencer Aaronson
I'm a long-time resident of Southern California who travels often to this part of Texas for leisure purposes myself. In my own travels over the years, I have been the beneficiary of incredible hospitality in the many unique properties where I've had the good fortune of resting my head, so I'm only too happy to return the favor and provide people with their own memorable vacation experiences.
Why they chose this property
After taking a road trip through the Big Bend area several years ago on my way to Memphis, I was hooked on this area. Something about this particular part of the country really resonated with me. I'm not sure if it is the peace and quiet, the wide open spaces, the romance of a lost time, or, perhaps most likely, all of the above. I've been making routine trips to the region since then and finally took the plunge and bought this property. I have a major soft spot for carefully-restored historical properties, and this one definitely fit the bill. A lot of care went into this renovation. I fell in love with it the moment it popped up on a real estate website I refer to. When I made a trip out there and saw it in person, I loved it even more. I have no doubt you'll feel the same.
What makes this property unique
This is a serious step back in time to the Pancho Villa era. But with all the modern amenities and luxuries one has come to expect in these unique properties. Here are just some of them:
