About this property
Abandon stress, all ye who enter here
Casa Gatos offers a tranquil, homelike setting in which to relax during your vacation on the Riviera Maya. Situated on a quiet lane that lies halfway between Half Moon Bay and Yalku Lagoon, it faces a small natural park, that buffers us from the bustling traffic of the beach road. The house wraps around an inner courtyard, behind a secluded tropical garden, inside a Maya style gated limestone wall.
Our guests often express their surprise at the spaciousness and understated elegance of the rooms. The open plan living area has been richly furnished with comfortable contemporary sofas and club chair, augmented by an eclectic selection of art and antiques. The dining room features a glass topped table with uniquely carved wooden base, and the kitchen has ample space and facilities for two or more cooks to work together. The house has been flexibly designed so either the entire townhouse plus junior one bedroom apartment can be combined with four bedrooms, three baths and two kitchens accommodating up to 10 or eleven guests or the house can be divided into one, two and three bedroom apartments.
The central courtyard, side terrace, balconies and roof garden extend the living space into the outdoors for relaxing or eating.
The house is within a few hundred yards of the entrances to Yalku Lagoon and Half Moon Beach. Que Onda Restaurant is on the corner of our street and La Lunita and Buena Vida Restaurants are a short stroll away. Seven more restaurants are at the entrance to Akumal as are a variety of stores. More restaurants and stores are in the pueblo across the highway.

About the host
Hosted by Dan Freeman or David Zucker

Prior to moving to Akumal, Dan had been the Director of Sales and Marketing for the Philadelphia Zoo and New Jersey State Aquarium, the owner of a catering company and an event consultant. David ran a paperboard products company in Philadelphia. When planning our future, we did not wanted more to do than three days of golf or fishing or sitting in a rocking chair. Managing the house and the rentals, adjusting to living in a foreign country and becoming active in our community have provided enough activity to stave off boredom. Dan has become the president of the North Akumal Community where in the past three years we have completed paving the roads complete with speed bumps, installed solar street lights, and are currently building a community center/police station and bringing in fiber optic lines.
Why they chose this property
Before buying Casa Gatos we had been coming to Akumal for twenty years for the scuba diving, especially cave diving. We chose to buy this house when planning for our retirement, not only because we loved the beauty of the house and garden, but also it gave us the opportunity to rent a few apartments and meet visitors from all over the world. We have been lucky to have found a great community of friendly and congenial neighbors and to have had guests that were interesting and enjoyable.
