About this property
Romantic Adobe Cottage nestled in San Cristobal Valley License #9197 Taos
Situated on two acres of the San Cristobal Creek valley, 15 miles north of Taos, 29 Spotted Owl offers a splendid setting at the foot of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. Views to the east are of the alpine heart of the Taos Ski Valley, to the west of the Taos Plateau and high desert that surrounds the Rio Grande Gorge. Spotted Owl is perfect for those wanting to combine the cultural and culinary pleasures of Taos and skiing in the Taos Ski Valley, which lies some 15 miles east, and world class hiking in the Wild Rivers Recreation Area, about 15 miles north. Lying within the boundaries of the Carson National Forest, the village of San Cristobal also offers a trailhead for a scenic hike into the Columbine Hondo Wilderness Study Area, which features some of the best hiking in the Sangre de Cristos.
The 1,052-square-foot adobe dwelling itself is nestled in a beautifully landscaped slice of the creek valley, just down the ridge line from the D.H. Lawrence Ranch, listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Surrounded by sage brush and wildflowers in the spring and summer and snow pack in winter, Spotted Owl is an artfully appointed getaway for a couple or two wanting to drink in the ambiance of northern New Mexico in any season.
A central living, dining and kitchen area features a wood burning stove plus a kiva fire place to snuggle up to. An expanse of windows open to two walled courtyards and an open sitting area shaded in the spring and summer by the colorful foliage of native trees and the brilliant blooms of purple aster, hollyhocks, purple sage and many more. Each of the two bedrooms and baths, located on either side of the common area, includes a top quality king sized bed with all cotton sheets as well as cozy down comforters. Off of the southern patio, a courtyard has a two- person hot tub to soothe aching muscles and, on a clear night, offers a planetarium-like view of the starry sky, undiminished by the city lights of Taos.
Along with the landscaping and wood-burning stove, the passive solar design of the house- complete with thick adobe walls, heated Saltillo tile floors, ceiling fans and south-facing windows- ensures a cozy and comfortable retreat year-round.

Hot tub perfect temperature and cleaned/serviced twice during our stay. Great fireplace creating warm and cozy mornings. Home nicely decorated. Peaceful area. Easy drive to Taos Rio Grande gorge and other sites of interest.
Beautiful place, very well equipped and very nicely decorated. Fantastic setting at the foot of the mountains. All kinds of fun things to do nearby. Hope to come back soon!
Beautiful home in quiet San Cristobal. Twenty minutes from Taos and near lots of hiking. We loved spending our mornings sitting in the garden with the flowers and birds
Our family had a lovely stay at this cottage. It was a well-situated house with all the amenities we wanted--in particular a peaceful atmosphere. We loved the garden and the hot tub. The house was comfortable. We stayed two weeks and often stayed the whole day reading and playing games. Any issues we brought up were quickly resolved with the owner in an amicable way. We would love to stay again.
Beautifully appointed and everything we needed to have a wonderful stay and cook meals. The most beautiful short term rental we’ve ever stayed in. We hope to return very soon. Host was responsive and provided everything we needed.
Home is warm, spatious, and comfortable with everything needed for cooking, family time, and relaxing. Hot tub is perfect for unwinding under the stars. Short commute to Taos Ski Valley.
We had a great time in the cottage. Loved the decor. Owner was responsive to any questions we may have had.
It was quiet, the hot tub was a plus and the beds are very comfortable.
Loved this property. The animals and birds were abundant. Close to many attractions. Great trails in the area in addition to being close to Taos and Santa Fe. Great for dogs too!!
This wonderful home was so cozy. It has extremely comfortable beds and a fully equipped kitchen. The fireplaces added ambiance to this comfortable country home and it is decorated so beautifully. My husband and 2 pups enjoyed our stay.
Very relaxing!!!!! true beauty inside and out - fun in the daytime - fun in the evening and night. Did most of our meals at the casa. Enjoyed the sunsets!
We absolutely loved this property! We stayed for a full month to escape the heat in Texas, and felt so at home here. I was teared- eyed when we had to leave. We will definitely be back as soon as we can, especially next summer!
The house is just as described. Very quiet area close to plenty of hiking and just minutes from Taos. Very clean and easy to access. Host was helpful and friendly at all times. Highly recommend!
We have stayed in the Taos area 9 times now and we enjoyed this rental more than any of the others. The cottage is well sited and laid out with lovely views into the back yard and mountains beyond. It is a very peaceful place, comfortably furnished and tastefully appointed with nice touches throughout.
Highly recommend this lovely, well-maintained, well-appointed home with mountain views. Make sure you soak in the hot tub after your hike -- heavenly. Thanks to Patti for being so responsive to our questions. We can't wait to come back!
