Historic and quiet St. Joseph neighborhood: Lovely comfortable 100 yo two story

A two-story 4 bedroom 2 bath cottage just blocks from the beach, downtown St. Joseph, and many other attractions and points of interest. Up on the bluff, so you don’t have the crowds and the walk up the bluff to town. Perfect for one or two families. Sleeps 9, with kitchenette and breakfast nook upstairs and full kitchen and dining room downstairs. Parking for 2 cars and an easy walk to Silver Beach, Whirlpool Fountain, restaurants and many other local attractions. Free WiFi internet, Central AC. Charcoal grill. No yard but front porch for relaxing in this quiet, historic, old neighborhood in historic section of Old St Jo. This is not a commercial rental but our own home now offered to guests who appreciate homey ambiance. We are not professional rental hosts. We are an older retired couple who planned to live out our days in this house but necessity dictated a smaller one-story, so we decided to make our home available to families who want to experience old Saint Joseph as it used to be. This hundred year old house is full of good memories and we hope you enjoy adding to them.

Strip any used beds and gather used towels
Remove personal items, remove leftover food and drinks and take out the rubbish

It would be much appreciated if you would put used linens and towels into the washer and start it up.
Leaving the cottage as you found it is so helpful to our cleaning crew who are getting ready for the next guests.
Failure to complete these may result in a negative review from the host.
This is an old historic neighborhood where people value privacy, quiet, and traditional village living. Please be a good neighbor. Quiet time is 10-7.
Please leave the house the way you found it. If something happens (breakage, loss, etc.) please let us know via text to Vrbo.
House parties are not allowed (they give us a bad reputation with our neighbors (and they ruin stuff)). Think “family.”

This rental is so cute and cozy! I stayed there with friends for two nights for a weekend event in Indianapolis. The fairy/string lights and faux vines throughout the house are an adorable touch, and worked very well as nightlights. The living area and master bedroom have ceiling fans in addition to the central AC, which was very nice as I enjoy having the sound of a fan while I sleep. The beds were a little creaky, but everything was clean and comfortable! The bathroom was stocked with soap and towels. The shower was a little dark, but the water pressure more than made up for it! The kitchen had everything we needed for our short stay and there were several restaurants/taverns within walking distance as well. Street parking was very easy and we never had any issues finding a spot to park, even with the two cars out group had. The neighborhood was fairly quiet for being in a city and walking a few blocks to get something to eat felt very safe. (There's also a cute coffee shop just around the corner with superb blueberry muffins and a bookseller as well!)

The house was charming & perfect for our extended family. Location was ideal - we could walk everywhere. We cooked most of our meals-the kitchen was well stocked with cooking equipment. It was a great vacation!

The perfect cottage for a week's stay in the cutest beach town! The ONLY thing i might critique is maybe updating some of the furniture as it has clearly had some use over the years (very obvious to see why as this is a perfect rental for the area). I'm still giving it 5 stars as it is worthy of it!

We had a great time in St. Joe! The house is in a fantastic location, so close to everything. David was very helpful when we had an issue with one of the TVs. He came over right away to address it and made sure we were satisfied.

Restful vacation

The property is close to all shops and the beach. The kitchen has everything you would need to cook and everything was very clean. Check in and out is very easy and the owner answers quickly and is a great host St. Joe had extremely hot and humid weather during our stay and I was greatful that the ac worked great The house is a nice home-away from home Hoping to stay in the future.

Lovely time

Had a great time with family. Everyone had their own space. Great having 2 bathrooms. Location great for walking to town and the beach. Air conditioner kept up even on the really hot days. Needs a new couch but overall lovely.

Cute little home in a safe, lovely, historic area. Just a short walk away from beautiful downtown St Joe and Silver Beach. So enjoyed walking on the bluff with my family. LOVE the location!

This is our second time to stay at this property, and we absolutely love the location. Being able to walk down to the beach, to Silver Beach Pizza, to the shops and Kilwin's, and then being able to walk back "home" for a break whenever we need it is wonderful. My 3 kids also enjoy being able to have their own space and not have to share a bedroom. Chris is very easy to work with and quick to respond to questions. We will be back!

Fun family getaway

We've been renting this house for 3 years now, and we're already signed up for next summer. Overall, this is a nice house with plenty of space, in good shape, and has a great location adjacent to downtown (only a 5 minute walk to the beach). It is a reasonable price for the area as well. The owners are very pleasant, organized and prompt in communications. The house is always clean and in good shape when we arrive. We look forward to our time in St. Joseph each year.

Lovely little cottage

Stayed here on our first visit to St. Joseph for a summer family vacation. House is very well equipped and was very clean. Very close to town for restaurants, library, walking, etc. Beach is a bit far because of the railroad in-between town and the beach and a high hill, but parking at the beach is very easy and inexpensive. This is NOT a 3-bathroom house, nor is it a 2-bath plus outdoor shower as there is no outdoor shower. But the 2 full baths indoors are very clean and updated. Note that there is virtually no outdoor space except the front porch and the parking area for the 2 cars - plus the small pad where the bbq grill is. We should have been more careful about selecting someplace with a little bit of yard for the kids. Otherwise, a very comfortable place to stay!

Very nice cottage

This is our second time at this property and I was really happy that the owners had addressed our primary issue from last year (rocking toilet). The only feedback for this year is: 1. Pls include instructions on using the TV w/Roku. We don't actually use Roku - we still have Xfinity so this was very challenging even though wea re not big TV watchers - we did want to see the Democratic convention. We finally got through the correct sequence of buttons but it was a struggle to be honest. 2. There were no washcloths left out and really no extra towels at all (not what we remembered from last year). We did raid one of the owner closets to get a couple of washcloths. If these are items we need to bring (like Europe) then pls include in the listing. 3. The new wagon was great - we used every day and just put it in the back of the car each night and locked it up. thank you so much! 4. The hot water tap in the downstairs BR just started to drip the last few days. I assume you pay for water so wanted to make sure you were aware of this potential issue. Otherwise things were fine (oh there were lo9st of DVDs but no DVD player??). Great location - walked everywhere - and very quiet. Dave and Chris met nearby, raised their two boys all over the US, and retired to St. Joseph in 2017. They bought this house in 2004 with the plan to retire to it and rented it as a vacation home for families to come to in the meantime. It’s been so much fun having families come that they retired into a much smaller house so they could keep this one as a vacation rental. (Since they are avid sailors, they aren’t home much during the summer anyway.) This neighborhood is a wonderful old historic neighborhood; it works great for summer vacations because it is between the town and the beach, and because it’s laid out nicely for family fun.

Why they chose this property

Vacation rentals on the beach are very expensive, and the hike up the bluff to town can be tough. This cottage is ideally situated between the town and the beach so you have the best of both worlds. The City of St. Joseph hasn’t allowed any new short-term vacation rentals in many years out of desire to preserve the historic charm of the city neighborhoods, so we feel privileged to be able to offer our home for rental and we do our best to rent to those who want the same things. The house is furnished with our own much-loved family things.

What makes this property unique

We furnished the home for ourselves to live in. We hope it makes you feel relaxed and comfortable. Many vacation rentals feel like hotels. We hope our cottage feels like a place you always wanted to stay.
