Cottage in Prats du Perigord, Nr. Belves, Dordogne, France - Set in the Peaceful Countryside
Having visited the area on and off since 1990, eventually decided to buy as a base to visit. Leaving my last job in UK in 2007, retrained as a builder and made the move here permanent.
Owner purchased this Cottage in 1998
Why Owner chose Prats-du-Périgord
The local countryside has wildlife in abundance and there are beautiful walks on ther doorstep. The locals are kind, friendly and always chatty. The area is renowned for it's gastronomy and wines. Although the cottage is in a rural setting, 15 minutes sees you at the beautiful villages of either Belves or Villefranche du Perigord with their local shops.

Lovely stay in a peaceful location
We had a really lovely stay in the cottage which is in the most tranquil spot. The pool was a huge hit with the children and was very refreshing after a long day out. The cottage itself is very well equipped with lots of character. Pete was very helpful and had a lovely welcome pack ready with wine, coffee, milk etc which was very appreciated after a long drive.
You will need to watch however if you have any mobility issues at all as there are many steps around the cottage and the stairs inside are unique but can be a challenge!
The surrounding area is beautiful and we found many lovely places to visit and restaurants to eat at. You will need to drive however as there are no amenities within walking distance.
Overall a really great stay and recommended.
Wonderful peaceful location with a fabulous pool.
At first glance, the property is charmingly rustic, but a little basic in terms of furnishings. However it is very clean and well equipped and when you have the beautiful scenery and a wonderful pool area you are set for a great holiday.
The house, gardens and pool were exactly as per the description on the website and exactly like the photos, which is refreshing as sometimes photos and descriptions can be deceptive.
The location was perfect for us as we wanted rural, the property was traditional and rustic, again exactly what we wanted, the gardens were beautifully kept and the pool was magnificent, kept beautifully clean by Pete the owner.
The house was clean and welcoming, we received a lovely welcome pack of milk, coffee, tea, sugar and most importantly after an 11 hour journey wine!
Pete welcomed us warmly, explained everything to us, showed us where things were and how things worked and said to give him a shout at any time if there was anything we needed or didn't understand, very easy as he was in the house next door, however we did not see him unless we needed him or if we passed on the drive, which again was what we wanted.
The nearest supermarket was Carrefour in Souriac which was 10 minutes in the car, again had everything we needed.
The nearby town of Belves was beautiful for coffee and crepes in the square.
We would definitely recommend this to friends and family.
We have already spoken to the owner and will be returning next year.
Simply a beautiful house in a fabulous area and well worth a visit.
Escape from it all
Quirky rustic cottage bursting with character in a very peaceful and private setting, overlooking a green valley. The sound of silence, occasional distant church bells, birdsong, squirrels. If you want somewhere to recharge your batteries this setting is beautiful; you can feel your shoulders drop when you arrive! The cottage had lots of beams and exposed stone; it was extremely well equipped and also had supplies of olive oil, vinegar, soap, washing up liquid, all towels (including pool towels), wine! etc. which was a generous touch. A lovely cool pool for those hot days. The owner was welcoming and there if needed but unobtrusive. We hope to be back!
The sound of silence.
This is a beautiful cottage in an outstanding location where privacy and peace are in abundance. The sound of silence and the birds - and the sight of early morning deer and plenty of lizards - adds to the experience. The pool is fantastic - great views, not overlooked and well maintained - and when the sun gets too hot there are plenty of shady areas. The area around is full of things to do - wild swimming, canoeing and walking - and plenty of good food and wine. The owner was discrete and helpful. Thankyou
The nearest airport is Bergerac, 1 hours drive. The ports on the north coast are approximately 10 hours drive. A car is necessary for getting about as there is no public transport available here.
Our main towns are Sarlat, Gourdon, Domme, Cahors and Bergerac, attractive medieval towns full of charm and character with markets once or twice a week. Close by are the chateaux of Castelnaud, Milandes, Marqueyssac and Beynac, the caves of La Grotte de Lascaux (famous for its prehistoric paintings), the village of La Roque-Gageac and the hillside town of Rocamadour (second most visited site in France). Canoeing down La Dordogne, is an experience not to be missed.
In Belves 13km, Villefranche du Perigord 12km and St Cyprien 25km, you will find banks, supermarkets etc.
