About this property

Lakefront cottage, quiet neighborhood, boat hoist and dock.

Close to CMAC performing arts. Across the lake from Canandaigua Yacht Club.

This cottage is one of the original Canandaigua fishing cottage on the lake. It is a basic cottage with a fantastic view. Has a dock, with a 3600 pound hoist, and 50' lake frontage. Sleeps seven, plus has a futon on the porch and a sleeper couch in the main-room. There is a full bathroom upstairs and a half bath in the barn.

The barn in not included in the rental. But it has a fully functional toilet in a room just inside the back door that is very convenient. The lawn between the house and barn is a pleasant place to sit and let the world go by. Garbage service is included in the rental and is collected once a week. Adequate parking is provided just off the beach road beyond the barn on the back yard.

No TV, but has WiFi.

Enjoy the lake instead. It is on the east side and the sunsets are gorgeous. The dining room table seats eight. The living room has a very efficient gas heater for the "cool" days. The kitchen has a gas stove, plenty of pots and pans, plenty of dishes and glasses, standard electric fridge and freezer, dishwasher and microwave, and lots of light. Cuisinart ice cream maker. X

Plenty of chairs, and picnic table on the lawn. Large back lot for bocce games.
This cottage is in a particularly nice location, privately situated, but with easy access to amenities, golf, wineries, and local attractions. Ice cream shops are a short boat ride away, as are good restaurants.

This house sits on Nibawauka Beach, serviced by a private road coming off East Lake Road that leads to a private access road for all the cottages on the beach.

It is a quiet neighborhood with families with active children. This is not a "party house". It is a lovely spot on a lovely lake. If you're interested in late night action you should look elsewhere.

The lake itself is about 15 miles long, varies from three miles wide to just over one mile wide at the cottage, and largely is 300-450 feet deep. It was cut by glaciers that covered the area 12,000 years ago, and most of the streams feeding it flow from south to north. It has dozens of types of fish in it and myriad animals live on its slopes.

We have a sturdy boat hoist that is listed to handle up to 3600 pounds. It is electrically powered to lift and lower. Fishing is productive at times right off the end of the dock, and certainly better if one takes a boat out into the lake. Rock bass, sunfish, perch, "punkin seeds", etc. are commonly caught and released. Pickerel, large- and small-mouth bass, three species of trout, and catfish are also caught in the lake.

Outside, lakeside lawn has a large picnic table with benches, another smaller round table with four separate chairs, and several very comfortable old sitting chairs. Shade is provided by a maple on one side and three shade trees on the other, but the middle of the lawn is open and sunny.

The lake is down a flight of concrete steps to a concrete dock and an extended aluminum dock that leads out about fifty feet. The water at the end of that dock is only about 5 feet deep. An adult can walk out about 100' into the lake and still have his/her head above water. Several times a day several families of ducks paddle calmly past, occasionally we see a mink.

The Canandaigua Yacht Club is directly across from the cottage, and the weekend races are delightful to watch. City-run fireworks are easily seen from the lawn. The sun and moon set calmly over the hills on the other side of the lake over a mile away.

The nearest grocery store, Wegmans, about a mile and a half north on Rt 5&20. Walmart's, Lowe's, and the movie theater are all about a mile from the cottage on 5&20 to the east.

Canandaigua itself has numerous restaurants of all types. The town's Main Street is wide, with flowers in the business area, and has lovely stately homes in the residential area to the north.

Finger Lakes Community College is a mile north on East Lake Road and hosts musical programs in its CMAC outdoor pavilion nearly every week during the summer. Tennis courts are there.

Kershaw Park is at the north end of the lake, about a mile by boat from the cottage, and has a large sand beach with wadable water out nearly 200 yards.

We hope you never need it, but Canandaigua's excellent Thompson Memorial Hospital, associated with the University of Rochester Medical Center, is only a short distance away from us. Ambulance service is efficient.

Finger Lakes is a special area of New York. A resort area for going-on two hundred years. Explore it and you'll see why. Waterfalls, specialty shops, horse racing, antique shops, Indian Villages, Morman church historical sites, AAA baseball teams, Corning Glass Museum, Niagara Falls, Lake Ontario.

Come, enjoy, relax, and love the lake. We have for decades and still do.

Traveling in the past.

If you are looking to step in to 1940-50 this is your place, this place has no AC but all the windows open and you get a cold breeze from the lake, there is also fans in every room. If you trying to get away from the internet and TV and enjoy the lake and nature. If you have little kids you will need baby gate to block the stairs.

Old School Lake House Vibe

We had a great time at this property. Harry and Carolyn responded anytime I had a question. The house was everything we needed with and old school lake house feel. We spent most of our time outside in the water or fishing. My daughter even caught a catfish! Close to Wegmans grocery store and Sierra Trading which was great to purchase extra swimsuits and floats for the kids.

Beautiful setting on the water

Description is very accurate - the house is not fancy, but had everything we needed. The biggest issue for our group was that the only bathroom in the house is on the second story, which was a bit tough on my in laws and young children. The setting right on the water was beautiful and makes up for what the house lacks. We did not use the lift, but we were able to tie our boat to the dock. It was a short drive to the boat launch and all other conveniences in town. Owner was very responsive to a couple of issues when we first arrived. Overall a good experience!

Vacay

Beautiful view of lake. I can deal with dated but the place seemed to be very messy, not clean. It looked like they hadn’t dusted in a month or more. When you enter the cottage there were dead leaves in the entryway plus an old Exercycle. It would have taken someone less than an hour to clean that out.I had to stand on a chair to change a lightbulb in the bathroom. Pros: Beds were comfortable Washer and dryer available Even though not air conditioned the fans did work well Well stocked kitchen

Lakeside R&R old school style

The classic home, circa 1940s-50s, on east (BEST!) side of Canandaigua Lake, with breathtaking views and breezes, easy shallow shoreline, spacious and tons of easy parking, great open, well light airy kitchen, 5 bedrooms upstairs, (2 facing the lake!), fun front porch, toasty propane heater, the extra outdoor building with toilet, and the generosity of the hostess (Janet); these are some of the highlights

Family Vacation

Dish washer did not work. Spiders on the dock. Needs professional help. WiFi very weak. Put in wrong place. Not enough fans to cool up stairs. Bought 4 at Walmart and left at cottage. Stove had only one knob. Great large living area. Great front porch overlooking area. Great dock. Nice size bedroom. Convenient location.

Needs update

More than rustic, it’s dated. The cottage is in a beautiful location but lacked many features for price paid. Dock for boat was ok but hoist inoperable, lights without bulbs, all baseboards hadn’t been wiped down in years, screens in disrepair and no WiFi or ac. Granted it’s a advertised as a rustic place but with limited fans, no air conditioning coupled with dust and bugs at night due to screens, left us leaving to sleep elsewhere and only use the cottage during the day. The owner was responsive but gave no significant consideration for our inconvenience. If you want a relaxing place and have issues with heat or dust this isn’t the place. I hope they are able to update this historic home.

Nice Cottage on the lake

Stay was as advertised. Cottage was nothing fancy, but beautiful lake views right on the water. I would say the place only has one bathroom because the other in the barn left a lot to be desired. That being said we had a great time and would stay here again. Thanks.

Extremely Disappointing Rental

We were extremely disappointed with this rental. As soon as we pulled up, we were greeted by 2-3 foot weeds all around the back entrance. The cottage was advertised as being cleaned with disinfectant and enhanced cleaning practices, however the place smelled so dusty and musty that we did not even sleep there. We paid for a hotel in Geneva instead and just stayed outside at the cottage during the day. Rather than cooking there, we ate all meals out so our vacation cost more than double. The cottage also advertises bedrooms but the walls do not go all the way to the ceiling so there is zero privacy. The upstairs felt more like an attic with partitions and was blistering hot. The mattresses were extremely old and lumpy. There was a bees nest in the ground and 2 hornets nests by the back porch and we were stung several times. The “fire pit” was just a few rocks right next to the outdoor electrical outlets. We also saw a chipmunk enter the house under the screen door. To charge what they charged per night for this cottage, which is not properly maintained and advertised falsely is unbelievably wrong.

Summer family weekend.

Great property. We had so much fun. Lots of beds, windows and room. Outside area overlooking the lake was beautiful. Dock was nice with ladder at the end for swimming. I would definitely stay here again. Location to stores was perfect.

Great view and relaxing experience

Very simple lake living as the owner states....could use a few updates but the owners were great to work with, flexible and made the process easy. They were very responsive with any needs. Quant and historic lake house with a great position on the lake, being close to town. Our family had a great time. Thank you to the Miller's for allowing us flexibility to stay on the days we selected.

About the host

Kari and I married in 1969 and bought this property two years later. We thought having a rental place on Canandaigua Lake would be lovely and it has been. We're retired now, we love the area, and return yearly to enjoy it.

Why they chose this property

Canandaigua is a beautiful lake in every season, but particularly in summer. Days are long, skies are blue, clouds are ever-changing, even the thunder storms are fun to watch from the shelter of the cottage. The lake on the east side, where the shore gently deepens over a considerable distance before it becomes too deep to wade, in contrast to the western side where the drop-off is within twenty or thirty feet of shore. We have shade when we want it, sun ditto, stores nearby, good restaurants golf, boating, fishing, etc. It's terrific!!

What makes this property unique

The clear lake water is refreshing to swim in. There are plenty of water activities available. It's lovely to be in a boat and watch the moon rise. Or to take a boat to get ice cream during a hot day. Or to go to a nice dinner in the evening.

CMAC performing arts center is one mile north and has fantastic concerts all summer.

Rochester, Geneva, Hammondsport, Naples, even Syracuse are all close enough if you have a desire to go there. Triple-A baseball is in Rochester. Eastman House with its museum is also.

Lake Ontario is only thirty miles or so north, if you want to see a huge lake. Seneca Lake is 40 minutes east if you'd like to see a large Finger Lake--40 miles long by 3 miles wide. Watkins Glen is spectacular and about 40 minutes to the southeast. Letchworth Park is an hour west of us with New York's gorgeous "Grand Canyon of the East", three beautiful waterfalls, and its Glen Iris Inn serves excellent meals. Corning's Glass Museum is a draw and directly south of us. Rain or shine, there's lots to do here.
