Lovely house. Clean and well equipped. Plenty of space for large groups. Owners very helpfull.
We stayed in this property as a group of three families. Plenty of space for all of us. Furnished to a very good standard with lots of character. Kitchen well equipped. Lovely walks in the area and the local town was great. Full of little antique shops and independents including a butchers. Handy to have a small co-op and Spar in the town as well. Owners very nice and helpful, but not intrusive in any way. Fabulous break all round.

Great for all the family - beautiful old country house with all mod cons in the kitchen & bathrooms
A beautiful old house with all mod cons in the kitchen and bathrooms and plenty of room for our 3-generation, 12-member family. Thanks to the thick walls our 2 toddlers didn’t wake each other or anyone else at night. We celebrated a late Christmas together over New Year and much appreciated the tasteful decorations - a tree, lights and various other elegant ‘Christmassy’ bits. There was enough room round the dining table and adequate equipment in the kitchen to invite other relatives for dinner, as well. Grandfather especially loved the Sonos music installation and the piano, while the (grand)children all enjoyed the good supply of books and toys available, including the dressing up clothes. The location is beautiful and very rural. We were able to see a sky absolutely crowded with stars – something we rarely, if ever, see where we live – and hear birds singing from sunrise to sunset, plus owls hooting at night. The grandchildren were fascinated by the nearby horses, cows, chickens and the occasional pheasant. This is a wonderful part of Britain to visit, with lots of places of interest, rolling green countryside, Dartmoor and the sea as well. The owners are both friendly and helpful if you need them, but absolutely not intrusive. We all thoroughly enjoyed our stay in this wonderful house. We wholeheartedly recommend it!

Merrifield was ideal as a place for our family to stay for our daughter's wedding in Devon.
Our large family from California loved gathering at Merrifield while in Devon for our daughter's wedding. There were plenty of bedrooms for everyone to spread out in, but we were able to gather in the large common rooms to enjoy each other's company. We especially loved the large dining room table where we could easily seat 11 adults and two babies when my daughter and her fiancé joined us for meals. We appreciated that the owners were open to allowing us to host a barbecue for 40 the night before the wedding, so we could give friends and family from both sides more opportunity to mingle. The owners were very helpful arranging for high chairs and a travel cot for babies, providing extra tables and chairs and a small marquee for the barbecue, and directing us to a delicious pub for our anniversary dinner. Our only difficulty as a tall family was dealing with many low doorways! We solved it by hanging ribbons from them to remind our tall guys to duck!

We moved to Devon with our 3 children approximately 10 years ago and have spent much of that time renovating Merrifield.
Merrifield is our passion and we are constantly updating and upgrading the house and gardens. It gives us great pleasure to share this wonderful place with our guests

Why they chose this property

Merrifield is a former Georgian rectory set in the middle of 20 acres of pasture and woodland. Despite being only a few minutes from the A38 it as an idyllic, quiet haven from which to escape todays frenetic lifestyle. There is no noise or light pollution (only the sound of birdsong our resident owls and some fantastic 'star gazing' on a clear night). If you are really lucky you may even see some very shy Roebuck deer.
Despite its rural location Merrifield affords easy access to Dartmoor right on our door step and the beautiful sandy beaches of the South Hams and the English Riviera.
If you enjoy shopping and sight seeing Plymouth, Exeter and Dartmouth are all just 30 minutes away. If you prefer arts and crafts and antiques, Totnes and Ashburton are closeby.

What makes this property unique

Merrifield has been renovated to a very high standard whilst retaining the unique period feel of the house. The emphasis has been to provide a comfortable, homely atmosphere. Despite only being in the industry for two years we are very proud of our 5 Star Gold Award with Visit England.
There are plenty of outstanding restaurants for fine dining, or Inns and pubs, the nearest being just a mile away. Locally sourced home cooked food is also available on request and we can accept deliveries from Tesco or Sainsburys in time for your arrival.
If you are not familiar with the area we are happy to suggest local attractions and activities for all ages and abilities.
