About this property
Romantic Gite & own pool, on hillside nr Saint Emilion with stunning panoramas
Welcome to this lovely, relaxed Gite in its very special setting. Here you have commanding views down over the sweeping vineyards below, and across the Aquitaine plain towards St Emilion.
Awaken to the sun and idle up the lane to the village deli for bread (4 mins). Enjoy your croissant by the pool and plan lunch at the charming bistro in the village square.
Tonight there is a local rose for aperitif on the lower terrace and then a barbecue on the lawn as everyone relaxes into the holiday . . . . and then becomes breathless as the incredible sunset reveals from the special vantage point.
Forget your watch, and let the chime of the Abbey set the pace.
And beyond today? Wonderful walks, cycling (4 bikes are yours to use) and exploration from this comfortable base. The Dordogne river is just 5km away and the area is rich in wine chateau (endless tastings!), idyllic villages, historic towns and many local activities (eg caves, canoeing, ballooning, golf).
The "Anciennes Ecole" is packed with traditional French character, yet has new and modern amenities (eg 2 ensuites added new in 2016, refurbished bedrooms, TV, DVD, WiFi etc). It's also very private, being gated and with a walled courtyard. A huge and rambling garden stretches off down the hillside.

About the host
Hosted by Laurence Young
We live on the West Coast of Scotland among the mountains and beside the loch. It's a sensational location - but sometimes we find it a little wet and cold. The climate, culture and style of the south of France is compelling! As a family of 7 (youngest is 14 and oldest is 28), our French home needed to fulfill a wide range of criteria, and The Old School House hit the spot. - it's large and spacious, and seems to always expand to take more family and friends. - there is lots to explore, to do and to see right on the doorstep. jogging and cycling is fantastic - there is night life in towns, not too far away - the property has two old classrooms, yet to be refurbished (another project in the wings)!
Why they chose this property
Having spent some time holidaying in different locations around the South of France, we decided we would like a base of our own. The Gironde was our instinctive target: we love the rolling countryside and the beauty of the vineyards and the villages. It has a remote, unspoilt charm and is "real" - the whole area is deeply agricultural and the land is worked. The wide range of majestic wines are an attraction (there are remarkable bargains to be had), plus the fabulous local ingredients and good food all around. Importantly, it's also so easy to get to. A quick drive from Bordeaux airport with so many low-cost flights, and the option of Bergerac, too. Plus, public transport to the door if we want it. Simply a wonderful location!
What makes this property unique
This is a very special location, and the pictures show how we are endlessly mesmerised by the views, the panoramas from the windows and the wonders created by this elevated position. It's also a great pleasure being in a home with age and character; there are many features of the Ancienne Ecole that remain and this building clearly played an important part in the village during the 1900's. Whilst the sensation is that the house sits amongst the vineyards, the village is just on the doorstep and being able to walk to the bakery is a fundamental part of each day. Then there is something magical about having the old Abbey next door, and waking to the gentle chimes of ancient bells . . . .
