Hooter house

Lovely house everything you need in a holiday home, lovely balcony, the owners have thought of everything you could possibly need, lovely beaches on our side, just one thing to mention is the roads in and around the area are very tight and you have to travel quite a distance to find a pub, unless you use the ferry to Salcombe,we personally we loved our stay at hooter House

Hooters house

House was very well equipped for 8 people and views from balcony are amazing. It’s a short walk to the beach but very difficult terrain especially walking back up to the house. The area is beautiful, salcombe is very quant and a great place to spend the day, shopping, fishing, crabbing enjoyed by all. The boat across the estuary was fun albeit a little expensive but the night taxi boats after 7pm were much cheaper

Stay at East Portlemouth

Lovely part of Devon. Only disappointment was the ferry crossing, which was quite pricey for such a short distance and stopped running at 7pm. The roads into East Portlemouth are very narrow and are a challenge from oncoming traffic. On a positive the views are spectacular on a coastal walk and Mill Bay beach and Salcombe is a must visit.

Terrific accommodation

If you're looking for a quiet location with all the mod cons then this is the place. A great mixture of old and new. Great fun getting to salcombe every day on the ferry and then escaping the crowds in the evening.

Fantastic house and friendly, helpful hosts.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here. The house is incredibly well equipped, the neighbours very friendly, and the village is gorgeous. There are several beaches a short walk away, and you can easily get to Salcombe on the ferry (which the kids loved). A really great base from which to explore the area.

Wonderful comfortable stay with everything you could wish for with amazing views

Our second wonderful stay at "Hooters" as we all refer to it. Everyone enjoyed themselves it is so comfortable like staying in your own home. So very well equipped the owners have thought of everything you might need. Thoroughly recommended we will certainly stay again.

Very pleasant

Very pleasant stay in a good property, just be warned that the kitchen is a little on the small side if you intend to cook for the full compliment! Overall, very enjoyable

Perfect location for the beach, access to the ferry and in a quiet location

Two families with 4 children and a dog; there was plenty of room for us all. We usually stay in Salcombe, but would definitely stay in East Portlemouth again and actually preferred it.

Fantastic house in a gorgeous location

The house was clean, well equipped and relaxed. We visited as a family group ranging in ages from 3-65 and it was enjoyed by us all. The view from the balcony was super and the close proximity to Mill Bay and Salcombe was a big bonus. We would definitely recommend this place and would love to visit again.

Clean and spacious

The property was clean, spacious and had wonderful views. There is excellent coastal walking on both sides of the estuary leading to Gara Rock and Prawle Point on the Portlemouth side with easily accessible National Trust coastal walks on the Salcombe side. There is a lovely beach down the pathway from the house. If you have people in your group who struggle with steep hills they may need to take a car a short drive to the local foot ferry if you want to access the beach and Salcombe. This is ideal for families who like beaches, walking, fishing, boating and visiting towns.

Great house, beautiful setting!

A lovely 3 night stay in this delightful house. Accommodated 3 generations during a 40th wedding anniversary celebration. Ideally situated for walks and to catch the ferry boat to Salcombe. The only downside was no local pub within walking distance, but it didn't impact on the holiday.

Comfortable family house.

Lovely peaceful location with great views. Owner helpful and friendly. Property basic but perfectly adequate , spotless on arrival. Care needed when parking outside house. Easier to park on road and walk down steps. Steep walk down to estuary.

the [property is generally tired and needs up-dating

the layout is great (bedrooms on the ground floor), with estuary views visible. there is simply not enough equipment in the house for 8 people. The cooker was extremely difficult to operate as the hob rings were no longer thermostatically controlled (either on or off). the fire alarm battery was flat, bedside lamps did not work (and hadn't been for some considerable time as this was recorded in the visitor book) the coffee machine was non-functioning: the list could go on!

Fantastic relaxing break away

It's a lovely house situated on a hill with a steep walk down to the beach. It is very remote and quite difficult to get to if you don't have a 4x4 especially in winter!! The house itself was really well equipped and had everything you could possibly need. There was plenty of room for 4 adults, 4 children and 2 dogs and the rooms were beautifully clean and tidy and very warm and welcoming. We would love to come and stay again in the Spring or Summer and take full advantage of the gorgeous walks around the estuary and take the ferry across to Salcombe again. Thank you for a wonderful stay!

Well-maintained house ideally situated for a relaxed self-catering holiday

The directions supplied by the owner before our visit allowed us to find Hooter House easily. The house was larger than I expected which was a pleasant surprise and also very clean. The kitchen was well-stocked for self-catering and the beds were comfortable. The living room opens to a balcony overlooking a back garden which in turn looks over the neighbouring farm. The balcony was perfectly safe for our 2-year old daughter to run around. The garden was small but very pleasant. If the weather is bad (as it was 1 day for us), don't bother to try streaming any TV programmes. The entertainment setup includes Netflix but internet connection proved too slow for this to be usable. However there is a decent range of standard TV channels, plenty of books and plenty of board games to play. Salcombe wasn't our cup of tea. We found it overpriced and offering nothing of interest that I could see. It isn't what I'd call a "real town" - mainly set up to sell stuff to tourists. I would advise staying the Portlemouth side which was beautiful with great views from the house and lots of walking paths. The beaches are fantastic. No shops though so best to stock up with food/drink before arrival if self-catering (or take excursions out to a proper town like Kingsbridge to shop). If you have small children, the steep steps cutting down from the house to the beaches are OK to go down, but tricky to get a pushchair up. Better to zig-zag up on the roads which is a bit of a trek but we enjoyed it. So why 5 stars? Because the location is interesting with beaches and hills not just countryside/woods. Plus, the house is so clean and well-stocked and the owners very efficient in providing necessary information.

We are Phil & Trish Taylor. We live near Axminster in East Devon. We have been running Summerleaze Cottage as a holiday home since 2006 and live next door, being on hand to answer any queries and offer advice. We have Hooter House in East Portlemouth South Devon, also available to rent.

Why they chose this property

We have holidayed in East Portlemouth for 26 years, and were lucky enough to Find Hooter House 21 years ago. Our 3 children have spent summers on Mill Bay every year of their lives and still love their East Portlemouth holidays. A lot of our summer holiday weeks are used by ourselves and by guests who have been coming back year after year, but do please enquire - this could be the first of many stays for you!
