About this property
Waterfront Home in Oak Bluffs - Walk to Town and Beach
This lovely four-bedroom shingled Cape overlooks Farm Pond, Harthaven, and Nantucket Sound. It is a vintage cottage comfortable for up to 6 adults, 8 with children. Built in 1900, expanded and renovated in 2009, kitchen remodeled in 2017, central heat/air installed in 2019, porches added in 2022, it is located in historic Oak Bluffs, near the Victorian Camp Meeting gingerbread cottages, center of the long-standing Black community on Martha's Vineyard, and heart of the Vineyard's art district. Have the best of it all: walk to town, beach, nature trails, tennis, bike paths, Oak Bluffs ferry. Close to everything yet very quiet. Peaceful water views from almost every room with glorious, wide upstairs porch and spacious screened in porch off of the kitchen. Very open, light interior, lots of windows, skylights. House is very cozy and inviting.
Enjoy the living room with a custom Lew French beach stone fireplace (currently only candles allowed), a window seat, and comfortable seating. There's a small den with a desk, couch and TV, a dining room with table for 6 or 8 in a pinch, a kitchen with Bosch appliances and a table for 2. Laundry/powder room on first floor. Back screened-in porch with teak dining set for outdoor dinners or shady seating. Upstairs are 4 bedrooms (2 queens, 2 doubles ) with vaulted ceilings, and French doors that open to an upper deck with spectacular 180-degree views of water and the surrounding landscape. Also full bath with tub and separate tiled shower on 2nd floor, 1/2 bath on 1st. There's an 8x10 shed for bikes and equipment in back yard and an outdoor shower. Linens, towels, beach towels included (100% cotton). Wi-fi, Hulu streaming live TV provided. 1-2 blocks from the beach (with lifeguard), bike paths, public tennis courts, playground, and around the corner from Land Bank conservation walking/running paths. Less than a mile from Farm neck golf course. 10 minute walk to town, harbor, restaurants, shops, carousel, campground cottages, ferry and beaches.

About the host
Hosted by Laurel Schneider and Emilie Townes
We are a couple who live here and in Boston. We are both professors who have year-round family on Martha's Vineyard and we have been visiting the island for years. We love Oak Bluffs for its quirky charm and its important history. This is our dream home, purchased from artist-owners who lovingly lived in (and renovated) the house over the past 3 decades. We look forward to retiring here. The Martha's Vineyard Magazine did a story on us and our house, you can read it here: https://mvmagazine.com/news/2024/03/05/leaps-faith
Why they chose this property
We bought this house for its stunning location and internal beauty, its proximity to historic town and beach, and its structural soundness. It was built in 1900, remodeled and expanded in 2009. We just upgraded the kitchen with custom cabinets and countertops, installed year-round heat and AC, and added a screened in porch in the back as well as a covered porch on the front-door side. It's a special place.
What makes this property unique
In the morning, walk out the front door, along the pond, and a block down Canonicus Street to the Inkwell/State beach along Nantucket Sound. Walk along the water all the way around to the harbor, and end up at Biscuits restaurant for breakfast, then walk back through the Campground, full of brightly-painted Victorian cottages. Ride bikes to the seaside bike path toward Edgartown, with water and beaches on both sides. Or walk along the pond on the Land Bank trail and see the many varieties of waterfowl, including Great Blue Heron, Osprey, Bufflehead ducks, swans, geese, and a (very) occasional otter. We feel this is the absolute best location on the Vineyard. There are gorgeous walks in every direction, and you can kayak on the pond right out in front of the house. Some great fishing locations are within sight of the house. It's a very short walk to town, the harbor, restaurants (check out Sweet Life for a special occasion), galleries (we like Cousen Rose, Featherstone, and Alison Shaw). There's a grocery, coffee shops (we like Mocha Motts), banks, post office, and hardware store in addition to many souvenir and gift shops. Cap off your day with cocktails on the huge upstairs deck overlooking Farm Pond and Nantucket Sound. You can see water from nearly every room in the house.
