Townhouse in old Marseillan
We were lucky that this townhouse was available for a last-minute rental in high within the midst of the narrow winding streets of old Marseillan. A day after confirming, we flew into Carcassonne airport and picked up a rental car. An hour later we were welcomed into the property by the housekeeper Amanda Marseillan itself is a charming quiet small town with some pretty good restaurants. It remains undeveloped, with only two or three small hotels. Tourism is mostly french families camping locally or renting The old town is well-placed, being only a 10-minute walk to the harbour and a 15-minute drive to some of the best beaches in the south of France, those between Marseillan and Sête and around Agde are nearby and particularly impressive. Then further afield we took trips by car to Beziers in 40-minutes and an hour to Montpellier It's not necessary to use the car for local supplies however. A couple of minutes walk from the house takes you to a well-stocked Spar supermarket with its own wine cellar and we visited three busy boulangeries for our breakfast croissants The house was built on three floors connected by an ancient narrow stone spiral staircase that is tricky to negotiate with large suitcases and which will not be appropriate for people with limited movement or small children. Being tall and thin the house is relatively dark, with electric lighting needed at all times on the ground floor There are stone floors throughout the house that is simply furnished with a kitchen, table and four chairs as well as a sofa bed and chair on the ground floor. The first floor contains two bedrooms separated by a bathroom. On the second floor there is a bedroom and small en-suite bathroom as well as a small terrace that only has one old lounger and a few plastic chairs The main negative was that we did not sleep well, both the double beds on the first and second floors were very hard and the bunk bed in the third bedroom was too small for my teenage son who transferred to the ground floor sofa bed where he was troubled by insects and noise from the road. The other issue was the lack of curtains on the second floor, so that light flooded the room very early in the day. After a couple of days we improvised makeshift curtains Overall however we had a great break and enjoyed our base in Marseillan!

Why they chose this property

The house is walking distance to the local bakery, you'll pick up fresh warm croissants and take your morning coffee on the small outdoor terrace.
Just a 10 minute stroll will take you to the beautiful harbour which is lined with restaurants and cafes aplenty.
A stones throw away from there is a little man-made beach which is perfect for a quick paddle and picnic.

If you venture out then Marseillan Plage is just 15 minutes drive by car where you will find 14km of golden sand and a whole area of a seaside town.

For a day trip why not consider driving to Barcelona! yes, just 4 hours away by car it's one to think about.....

Oh yes and don't forget to try the gorgeous mussels and the delicious red wine that the region offers.
