About this property

Beautiful private cottage with incredible mountain views and great location

Alfie's Cottage is a home away from home. It is fully equipped with a full oven, fridge/ freezer and washing machine so that you can get settled and cook your own meals whilst also enjoying the wonderful restaurants, wine farms and golf courses on offer close by. There are mountain views out of the cottage windows of the magnificent Hottentots Holland nature reserve and we are very near to the Erinvale golf course and the Lourensford, Vergelegen and Morgenster wine farms. Alfie's Cottage borders the nature reserve and we are based on a road loved by walkers and mountain bikers for its incredible views of the mountains and reservoir. The cottage has barbeque facilities and a private patio to enjoy sundowners after a day out.

My host, Jen, was awesome! Brought a welcome drink and told me of the many wonderful options for entertainment in the area. Even made dinner reservations for me at one of the nicest wine estates I've ever been to (and I've been to many in the Cape Town area). And then allowed for a very helpful late check out on my last day.

Perfect hideaway at Somerset west

Nice little cottage, opposite the water reservoir. The cottage is equipped with anything you need for your stay. The view to the Helderberg mountain are spectacular.

What can I say about this place – it is AMAZING!We stayed here for 8 days in November 2025 at the end of our Garden Route journey celebrating our 50th wedding anniversary and my wife’s birthday.We found this property on Vrbo, having seen other people’s reviews, and we weren’t disappointed.Situated on the outskirts of Somerset West, near the Helderberg Nature reserve, it’s a beautiful location, and perfectly situated for wine-tasting in the local area.Our hosts were Jen and Charles Niehaus, who made sure our stay was exceptional.The cottage has all the facilities you need. A large lounge area with a smart TV and DSTV box. The kitchen had everything we needed – microwave, gas hob, electric oven, fridge freezer, washing machine, filter coffee machine (and complimentary locally roasted coffee) and plenty of storage. The bedroom was spacious with plenty of clothes storage. The bathroom had a great shower. Outside the lounge French doors, there was a nice patio with seats and a parasol.The one thing that made this place very special was our hosts – Jen and Charles. They are such nice people, and so helpful. Jen gave us some great recommendations for restaurants and wine estates, and Charles helped resolve a flat battery on our rental car (I’d left the side lights on overnight!!)We’ll definitely be staying here again when we’re next in Cape Town.Thank you, Jen and Charles for making our stay very special.

Die Kommunikation mit den Gastgebern war ausgezeichnet, wir haben viele Tipps für Unternehmungen in die Umgebung erhalten. Wir haben nicht erwartet, dass Handtücher und Bettwäsche während unseres Aufenthaltes mehrfach gewechselt wurden und auch nicht, dass eine Reinigung des Apartments erfolgte. Bei Sonnenuntergang waren die beleuchteten Berge sehr schön von der Terrasse aus anzusehen. Wir haben die Terrasse jeden Abend genutzt. Die nächstgelegene Einkaufsmöglichkeit (Mall) ist mit dem Auto in 10 Minuten erreichbar. Zum Strand benötigt man ca. 20 Minuten. Wir können die Unterkunft sehr empfehlen.

Charmantes Cottage an idealer Lage

Top 1A! - In allen Belangen hat es unsere Erwartungen übertroffen: Cottage gepflegt und im Landhausstil eingerichtet. Küche gut ausgestattet. Liegt gut bewacht in ruhigem, gehobenen Einfamilienhaus-Quartier am Rande des Nationalparks. Die Hosts Jen und Charlie wohnen direkt nebenan und sind äusserst hilfsbereit, sympathisch und antworten auf alle Fragen umgehend per Whats App. Jen hat uns viele wertvolle Tips gegeben. Zum Beispiel für Ausflüge in Weingüter mit traumhaftem Ausblick und tollen Restaurants. Die Bettwäsche wurde 1 x gewechselt und frische, flauschige Frottéetücher gab es alle 2-3 Tage. Top Service von Melody. Somerset West liegt praktisch und unweit nach Kapstadt, Stellenbosch, zu vielen Weingütern etc. Wir haben uns die 9 Tage sehr wohl gefühlt und kommen eines Tages bestimmt wieder. Wir bedanken uns bei den Gastgebern Jen und Charlie und auch bei der tollen Haushälterin Melody für alles.

We stayed in Alfie’s Cottage for two weeks on a self-catering basis which included Christmas. Well appointed and very conveniently located with easy access to supermarkets restaurants beaches golf courses which was exactly what we wanted. Good liaison with owners even though they were away but they were still available. No hesitation in returning there!

Schöne, ruhige und zentrale Unterkunft, sehr geräumig und gut ausgestattet.

Wir haben uns sehr wohl gefühlt und die Zeit sehr genossen. Die große Terrasse bietet genug Platz für Frühstück im Freien oder den Abend ausklingen zu lassen. Und das noch mit einem wunderschönen weiten Ausblick auf die Berge. Alles ist sehr sicher, da das Anwesen auch von einem Sicherheitsdienst überwacht wird. Eine Alarmanlage sorgt ebenfalls für Sicherheit. Das Wohnzimmer ist sehr groß und das TV-Programm bietet eine riesige Auswahl an englisch sprachigen Sendern, auch Deutsche Welle ist dabei. Die Küche ist ebenfalls ausreichend ausgestattet. Das Schlafzimmer bietet genug Platz für Kleidung (Schrank und Kommode) und Abstellmöglichkeit für die Koffer. Lediglich das Bad könnte etwas größer sein, da ist nur Platz für eine Person. Die Dusche ist ok. Die Gastgeber Jen und Charles sind sehr freundlich und immer um das Wohl der Gäste besorgt. Auch die Haushälterin Melody ist eine super nette Person die immer nach dem Rechten sieht und ebenfalls sehr hilfsbereit ist. Wir würden die Alfie Cottage wieder buchen und freuen uns schon auf ein nächstes Mal.

We are a family of four with a teenage daughter and son in primary school. We are passionate about travelling and enjoying the amazing lifestyle our country has to offer. Abby our cocker spaniel is very much part of the family and loves to welcome our guests. Our housekeeper and gardener have been with us for over 10 years and love meeting our guests from all over the world.

Why they chose this property

Alfie's Cottage is a very special place because of its unique location. We are situated right on the border of the Helderberg Nature Reserve with no properties in front of us so we are able to look right out at the stunning mountains which are forever changing colour. Our house has only been owned by one other family who built the property and Alfie the donkey, used to be housed in the paddock that still stands around the cottage.

What makes this property unique

The benefit to Alfie's is that it is in a very quiet and scenic location very close to the well known wine farms of the area but is equally close to the shops, markets, restaurants and beach thereby allowing visitors the luxury of convenience without sacrificing views or the countryside. We also have an excellent security company who patrol 24 hours on our road and park outside our gate when not patrolling for peace of mind.
