About this property

Romantic Cottege WITH PRIVATE POOL above Medieval City Walls

Selci is a detached, medieval house
The front door opens from the garden into the living room. A large room, with a magnificent, cross-vaulted ceiling, it has been divided to separate the breakfast kitchen from the living room. The kitchen has good equipment.
Beyond the living room is an elegant shower room.
A marble staircase leads to the first floor, with a double bedroom, a twin bedroom.
Furnitures is a mixture of old and new.
There are superb views from some of the rooms.
One side of the house is a walled garden, one side of which is the medieval ancient city wall.
There are several places to sit, eat sunbathe, and realx, with a vine covered pergola, fruit and pine trees, home to blackbirds, swallows and nightingales.
Near the vegetable garden 8 m diameter swimming pool, hidden behind a hedge.
in this garden there is a second pool, hydromassage for relaxation when your children sleep.
Behind the house is a park where the famous flag throwers sometimes practice, to the accompaniment of evocative medieval drumbeats.
The Guarnacci Museum is 300 m. with one of the largest Etruscan collections in the world.
In the town center, within a few minutes' walk, are important museums and art galleries, as well as an excellent variety of shops and restaurants.
Volterra is one of the oldest cities in Italy. there was as Etruscan settlement
in the 8th C BC: built on Villanovan foundations. The Etruscan developed thriving trades in metals, alabaster and salt. Captured by the Romans in the 3rdCentury BC, it was sacked in 80 BC. by Sulla. The Lombards favored and survived the Middle Ages intact, but was under the Florentine domination until the unification of Italy in 1860. Almost all the buildings are made of "bench", a king of limestone related to the alabaster for which Voletrra is famous.
The stone flagged streets and squares have wonderful buildings, such as the Palace of the Priors, the Cathedral, baptistery and square, a wealth of excellent restaurants and plenty of more.
Other attractions are the Roman theater, and Porta all'Arco, the intact Etruscan entrance to the city. The austere, medieval town center is a fascinating maze of winding streets, connected with narrow, arched alleys.
Concerts and festivities are organized to summer, and there is so much to see and do you need to move.
When you do, once you have driven down the
tortuous approach roads admiring the extraordinary moonscape of rounded clay hills.

Magical!

Casa Selci is wonderful - a simple, comfortable little house, lovely private garden and pool with spectacular outlook. Peaceful while within easy walking distance of everything in Volterra's historic centre - beautiful town with lots to enjoy. Great location for day trips to neighbouring towns and villages too. Daniela is a welcoming, helpful host.

Ferien in Volterra

Romantic stay in Tuscany

We had a great moment in Casole D'elsa at Daniela's house ! Daniela is very nice and available if you need help. The house, garden, swimming pool are cosy and romantic. The area is so beautiful, easy to go to Siena, Firenze, San Gimignano,... and Casole D'elsa is a very nice little village too ! We loved our stay at Daniela's and highly recommend it. Thank you !

A gem of a villa in authentic Tuscany

We stayed for a week in September and it was amazing! Firstly Daniela's excellent directions ensured we got there without taking out the GPS even at night! We had such a relaxing week there and we'd highly recommend it. The pool is quite large and we enjoyed using it daily. Daniela and Francesco ensured the pool was always clean and we had everything we needed. They went above and beyond to ensure we had a perfect stay. As another reviewer noted the beds and pillows were very comfortable. It was also a big plus that the property has Wifi. It is on the edge of Monteguidi, which is a tiny 2 street hamlet in the heart of Tuscany. The larger village of Casole D'Elsa is about 10min drive away with some lovely restaurants - especially El Brigante with lovely pizza and a great view. Thanks very much for everything Daniela and Francesco. We hope to see you again!

Amazing!

This property is absolutely beautiful! It is exactly how it is represented. The garden is stunning, the pool is refreshing, the apartment is quaint and cozy, the views are amazing, and the location is perfect! We stayed here for a week and fell in love with Volterra. The city is beautiful and the people are so friendly 😄. We will definitely be returning for another visit ... and, we hope to stay in this apartment again. Oh, and Daniela is just so sweet and helpful. Daniela, thank you for everything 😄

Wonderful place to stay

This property was faultless - the location and the accomodation were perfect. My family and friends came here to celebrate my birthday and I cannot think of a nicer place in which to do so. The owner Danielle could not have been more helpful. This was my second visit to Volterra and I would certainly recomment thsi property to anyone thinking of touring the area.

An Oasis of Calm

What you want from a holiday rental is to be near enough town to take advantage of its attractions and yet peace and quiet and all the necessary living facilities. Bearing in mind that Italy is always noisy, this was an almost perfect villa and I would highly recommend it to anyone. Volterra is a hill-top town in Tuscany, full of interesting buildings and several museums, it is surrounded by high walls that are interrupted by a number of gateways. Casa Selci was just round the corner from the most Easterly gateway of Port Selci, opposite an imposing medieval fortress now functioning as the State Prison. Perfectly situated, it is only a short stroll before you find yourself passing bars, shops, restaurants, two different museums, an alabaster workshop and even the local supermarket. Yet the villa itself, a converted barn, is set in an oasis of calm - a large, secluded garden with fruit trees, a wonderfully large circular pool, BBQ, loungers and a breakfast table overlooking a fabulous view of Tuscany. The two bedrooms are large, the shower powerful and the cooker both gas and electricity. There is no air conditioning or TV but it is perfectly well equipped for a hot, sunny summer holiday where you spend most of the time outside. I have to mention that there is a small park next to the house where boys play football most afternoons, and twice a week there may be noisy drum, trumpet and flag-waving practice between 9.30 and 11pm, but we found it quite bearable and managed to catch a festival day so we could enjoy the musical performance they gave in the Square.

Fabulous - A real find

Having read other reviews before we went - we would definitely agree with everyone who says that Casa Selci is a real find. We stayed there for a week in August 2011 and wish we'd booked it for both weeks of our holiday. The location is perfect. Volterra is an interesting town, lively and full of tourists ... but step away into your own little bit of heaven. Once at the house you feel like you're a million miles away from the town instead of a three minute walk. The view from the small breakfast terrace is breathtaking. The pool and the gardens are great and perfect for relaxing in. Daniella, the owner is very welcoming and the house is kept beautifully clean by Rosanna and her husband. It's well equipped. Shopping in the town is quite limited but there are two supermarkets a few minutes drive away. And treat yourself to an meal cooked by a real Italian cook (Thank you Piera!) which was organised for us by Daniella (it was a perfect birthday treat). Casa Selci is all it says it is and more. We would have NO hesitation in recommending it to anyone and would certainly like to go back or perhaps we'll try one of Daniella's other properties next time. Go - you'll love it!

Location, Location, Location

It is really difficult to write a review for this property and the town it sits in which would do it the justice it deserves, you could only visit it for yourselves to appreciate how special a place it is. Within the villa and it's grounds you could be in your own rural retreat, however step out the gate and straight away you are within one of the most picturesque, magical, historical towns you could ever imagine, it really has everything!! 'Romantic' is definately one word you would use decribe the town and also this villa which oozes tuscan charm with its rustic interior and large, enchanting gardens. The views over the garden walls of this hilltop villa are breathtaking. We stayed here with our three young children and although we were unlucky enough to have some 'uncharacteristic' weather during our weeks stay in July, we were grateful to be staying in such a fabulous part of Tuscany. The kids loved the pool and gardens, even in the rain!! Volterra is a small entruscan town perfectly preserved with it winding narrow streets and original buildings, which now offers plenty of authentic shops, restaurants and of course, ice-cream bars. You can actually feel the history as you walk through the town which makes this such a magical place to visit, not to mention stay in. Daniela, the villa owner, was extremely welcoming and friendly, she and her family were lovely. We'd booked to stay at another of Daniela's villas for our second week so visited some other fabulous places too including Sienna, Casole d'Elsa and San Gimignano and had a fantastic holiday. We would definately recommend this villa in Volterra to our families and friends and hope to go there again ourselves one day.

Great

We all thin that this was our best ever holiday. The house was comfortable, the pool relaxing, the views superb and the position of the house perfect in that we could walk into the charming town for shopping and ice creams. It was easy to drive to other towns further afield such as Sienna, Pisa and San Gimi.

You must stay here - fantastic

We stayed in Casa Selci Sept 3rd - Sept 10th 2011. I can honestly say this is the nicest holiday rental we have stayed at. We had an incredible welcome from Daniela (the owner). The house itself oozes character and has all the facilities you could wish for. There are two very good sized double bedrooms, a 'library' area with views over Tuscany and the on the ground floor - the kitchen/diner/sitting room with a good sized bathroom off to one side. Outside there is a BBQ, a reasonable sized pool and a huge garden (and I mean huge). It is completely private and not overlooked in any way. There is also a beautiful breakfast terrace with stunning views over the Tuscan countryside while sitting down. The garden also has similar views from a standing position. Volterra itself is a stunning picture-postcard town of the perfect size has many many good restaurants, a couple of grocery shops etc and a couple of little bars (thankfully not like the ones in Ireland/UK). It is the prefect place to visit Sienna, Florence and Pisa (all under 90 minutes away - and I was driving slowly due to being unfamiliar with the roads). We happened to be there for the annual Flag-throwing competition and that was a fantastic treat. I would really really recommend this property as it felt like a home and a holiday all in one. Daniela - you are a star! 1 Restaurant I would recommend (but all are good) is Del Duca (a little expensive but worth it). I can provide more restaurant details to anyone who wants to know but Daniela will also help. My advice - go to Volterra and stay in this house!

A little gem

We stayed at Casa Selci for a week at the end of August. The house is rustic with very simple furnishings. Its location is absolutely fantastic, situated at the highest point within the ancient walls of Volterra (which form part of Casa Selci's garden wall) and overlooking the surrounding countryside. It is located along a little used road which leads to a gated park* (I will say more about that later). The garden is large and contains little hidden gems such as ivy-clad statues, and a 'hidden' raised patio with a small table and chairs - perfect for watching the sun go down over a glass of Chianti. The swimming pool is much larger than the pictures suggest and a real asset to the property. The house, garden and pool are not overlooked at all. There is private parking on site too which is great given the restrictions that apply within Volterra. Volterra itself is simply stunning - the Piazza dei Priori, the sweeping steps down to the natural spring, the impressive Roman theatre and the pretty narrow cobbled streets - you just can't help but fall in love with the place. The city is pleasantly bustling in the evening and we felt very much at ease walking around late at night and many shops remain open until after 10pm. My family and I had a wonderful, restful stay at Casa Selci. Daniela was a very thoughtful hostess popping back later in the week to give us some of her home-pressed olive oil. She also arranged a tour guide to take us around the main attractions of Volterra and this was truly excellent and I would highly recommend. We were lucky enough to visit at the time of the Volterran Medieval Festival (late August) which was very well organised and well worth the entrance fee. Eating out was never a problem - there were so many restaurants to choose from and the food was varied and generally delicious. Two things to be aware of: The mosquitoes were a real nuisance (Volterra generally) and buying repellent spray in the town centre was expensive so take some with you. Secondly, the Volterran flag throwers, drummers and trumpeters practise regularly in the park next to Casa Selci. Most of the time they stopped their musical exercises by midnight but often, they would party on well after that time - something to think about if you are not a heavy sleeper. Overall, I would recommend Casa Selci.

A Tuscan Paradise

We have holidayed here for several years, coming across it by chance having looked for a property with a pool that wasn't out in the countryside where our teenagers would get bored! Casa Selci has everything. The garden is wonderful - big, extremely private, but with incredibly breathtaking views from the top of this hill-top town. The villa is exactly as described, well maintained and nicely furnished. The lovely owner and her helpers are very caring and friendly and as locals can advise on anything from places to eat and visit, to the best shops to buy local goods. The pool is fantastic...whether you want to just cool off every so often after lazing on a sunbed, or for a more energetic swim about...our teenagers were virtually never out of it when we were at the villa. And a most important benefit to this property is its position within the walls of the town, so that everywhere is walkable, and shops and restaurants are just a lovely wander away. We have always eaten very well at local restaurants, and enjoyed cooking with local ingredients at the villa sometimes too. But a real treat Daniela has organised for us on three occasions, is a wonderful meal provided by her very talented friend, the cook, who comes in and produces an amazing Tuscan meal at the villa, for a very reasonable fee. I cannot recommend this place highly enough for a relaxed and enjoyable holiday, catering for all the family. We now view it as a sort of home from home, and look forward so much to returning.

Wonderful Tuscany!

Volterra- Nice place to visit for a couple of days. House- Excellent location, wonderful views! Nice pool! Car is a MUST because Volterra is a small town and you have seen it in a couple of days and there is so much to see nearby (Siena, Florence, San Gimignano). Bad thing is that Volterra is located up in the hills so you have to drive all the way up and down, up and down when you want to visit cities nearby. (and it´s not straight way to drive :) But...views were great and it wasn´t too hot...we had nice wind blowing all the time. Daniela and others were very kind and helpful.
