Cotobro itself is a great place to "get away from it all" and really relax. There is a sandy beach and promenade and a restaurant and bar. A short walk along the seafront, with it's spectacular views, and you reach Almuñecar itself with a choice of restaurants and bars. Alternatively, there is a bus stop located on the promenade just below the apartment and this will take you into Almñecar and the surrounding towns and villages.
Almuñecar life definitely revolves around fish and seafood and the town dates back to 800 BC and the Phoenecians. Later it came under Roman control, Arabic rule before coming under Christian control in the 1500's. Evidence of the history is visible everywhere, even in Cotobro. With Roman remains, the stunning Roman aqueduct, the fish salting factory and the Moorish Castle. On reaching the cobbled streets of the 'Old Town', it is like stepping back in time. It's narrow streets are filled with quaint shops, fantastic restaurants and genuine tapas bars (where a tapas is free with every drink!) and if you love seafood, then it's definitely for you. In addition, you will find the local fresh food market which is open six days a week. On Fridays there is also a 'general market' and on Sundays there is a 'car boot sale'.
In the summer months, the Aqua Park is open together with other nautical pastimes such as jet-ski's, diving, pedalo's etc which are available along the beachfront. There are also the aquarium, tropical gardens, castle and museums which are all worth a visit.
Of course, no review of Almuñecar could be complete without mentioning the fiesta's and festivals. From the 'Semana Santa' processions at Easter, the 'San Miguel' fiesta in the Old Town in September and biggest one of all, 'La Fiesta de la Virgen de la Antigua' on 15th August, which boasts one of the biggest firework displays in Europe (and a whole host of others throughout the year) and not forgetting the "Jazz en la Costa" festival each July. There is clearly always plenty going on!
Almuñecar is also the perfect base from which explore other areas of Andalucia. Grandada and the Alhambra Palace is only an hour away and you can be skiing in Sierra Nevada in less than an hour-and-a-half. It is possible to ski in the morning and catch up on year tan on the beach in the afternoon! The Alpujarras are also a must! With some of the most stunning and individual villages that you will ever see including Trvelez, the highest village in mainland Spain. The Serrano ham factories here are worth a tour.
For most, a car will be useful if you wish to get about. However, Almunecar is accesible by bus from Malaga Airport (via Malaga Bus Station). If you require any help with transport please contact us and we will be able to advise you. Home delivery of shooping from the local supermarket is straight forward. IMPORTANT - Although you are able to park very close to the apartment, there still a few steep steps to negotiate to get to the apartment itself. Please take this into consideration.
