Endearing 17th Century detached cottage. Near Ullswater, Pooley Bridge, Lowther, Penrith Wifi
When Askham was within Westmorland, many felt it was perhaps the prettiest village in that county. Westmorland is officially no more. However Askham, with its close neighbour Lake Ullswater, remains to delight visitors. Askham has two pubs, an open air swimming pool (the paddling pool is heated), cafe, pottery and post office.
The Old Barn, dressed partially in ivy and climbing roses, tucks snugly into this picturesque slumbering village. The open plan first floor is a pleasing feature. Spacious lounge with comfortable furnishings merges with dining area whilst separate fitted kitchen is adjacent. Sleeping arrangements and bathroom are downstairs.
Endearing 17th Century cottages encircle a village green which runs down to the river Lowther. The Bird of Prey Centre is 1 3/4 miles away.
Nearby can be found the River Lowther and stately Lowther Castle set within a delightful park crowned with magnificent avenues of trees.
Village shop, swimming pool and pubs within couple of minutes walk.
An ideal area for walkers, with riverside walks close to your doorstep and within a short drive the famous Aira Force waterfalls. Gowbarrow Fell, High Street mountain range and Helvellyn are easily accessible by car. For the more energetic and adventurous there is Rookin House Activity Centre where you can try numerous activities including archery, quad bikes, go Karts, horse riding, fishing and clay pigeon shooting. Also an ideal area for mountain biking or cycling. Haweswater and Ullswater lakes are both within easy reach.

We just loved this stone house called the Old barn!!!
The house was located in Askham where we were going to a wedding. It was super clean and so convenient. Near a pub where other friends were staying and just around the corner from the town store. Very private but central to everything.
We would definitely stay there again. Was absolutely perfect!

Thanks for the 5 star review Nancy, sounds like you had a great time in Askham at The Old Barn.
My friends and I were so pleased with the cottage and such a lovely village in the Lake District.
Great communication and very helpful.
Very handy to have parking right out side the house and great Wi-Fi during our stay.
Was such a cosy home to stay in the for the weekend after lots of walking. Thanks so much for hosting us :)

Thanks for the 5 star review Ellie much appreciated. Hope the Lakes26 went well, must have been tough especially as it was the hottest day of the year so far.
The house was everything we needed, opposite a pub and the swimming pool. The villagers were very friendly and helpfull, especially in the swimming pool. Unfortunately the internet stopped working on the third day but the rental company responded out of hours to help sort it out..

Thanks Vicky for leaving a 5 star review and I am glad you enjoyed your holiday at The Old Barn in Askham with Goosemire Cottages.
This cottage was as per the listing although parking is on the street outside the door. The area is very quiet despite being virtually opposite a pub. 20 minutes drive to Ulleswater or about an hour to Windermere so perfect for exploring.

Thanks for taking the time to leave a review for The Old Barn Shaun and I am glad you enjoyed your holiday in Askham.
Clean and well equipped cottage, nice base for a break in the lakes, or as for us, weekend accommodation for a wedding. Rooms are compact but perfectly fine - smaller single room may be more suitable for children rather than adults for a longer stay. Upstairs living area very nice to relax in and kitchen very well equipped for meals and food storage - lovely big fridge & freezer. Host was great, and check in very easy. Only small confusion with the balancing payment, as we'd thought this would be taken automatically, but it was easy to sort. Many thanks

Hi Dan

Kind regards

stayed with family of 5 (2 adults and three children). Good size property for family and very well located in centre of Askham. One pub opposite and another within less than 5 min easy walk. The Punchbowl was a nice country pub and food was nice (food served to 9). Didnt eat in the Queens Head opposite as only served food until 6.
just round the corner was the open air swimming pool which the kids liked and 15 /20 minutes drive to Ullswater.
Enjoyed the stay, cottage could do with a little updating but perfectly good enough. No outdoor space but not really a problem given the location.

Thanks for taking the time to leave a review and i'm glad you enjoyed your stay.
This is a lovely, traditional barn type house. Very homely and traditional, some would say old fashioned but charming. We were three generations and used it as a base to tour the Lakes. Lots of lovely walks. The two pubs in the village are great and The Queens Head offers a tasting menu alongside light bites. We ate at the other pub in the village twice - traiditional pub grub. We did lots of lovely walks to Lowther Castle and up into the Fells just out of the village. The house could do with another loo but that is just personal preference! The house has all the basic amenities. One word of warning, Askham really doesn't have any service. The key safe wouldn't work so had to call the key holder and couldn't. Luckily I borrowed someone's wifi!!

Thanks for taking the time to review The Old Barn, sounds like you had a great holiday exploring the area.
I wonder if a mobile mast was down as in the past I have had a signal in the area with EE (can be a bit patchy indoors) and Vodafone (a bit better outdoors but can struggle indoors). Three tends to be the best indoor and outdoor coverage in that side of the Lakes.
Home from home… Lovely house, great area will definitely stay again
Had the best week! The house was lovely and had everything we needed and in a great location. Lots of great walks locally and lovely pubs and cafes. Couldn’t of asked for a better place.
Fantastic location and the house met all our needs and was a good base
The property was homely and had everything we needed for our stay . The communication prior to the stay was timely and helpful .
The location was very good with a well stocked local shop and Communal Garden and outdoor heated pool across the road we could use.
Plus several pubs serving food.
I would have liked an option to recycle bottles /packing , we dd separate out in case this waste could be collected seperately

Quaint little cottage
We really enjoyed our stay at this cottage. I felt the cottage was clean in all rooms on arrival but cob webs in corners of ceiling and under table need attention. All rooms presented well, kitchen a little dated but actually fit in with the cottage, however fridge not very cold and could do with changing. Overall my family and I enjoyed our stay it was comfortable and was fit for purpose (visiting the lakes). The property was listed as Pooley Bridge but it’s over 5 miles from there so not a short walk to PB as we thought it would be.
A modernized house furnished to retain an old country charm, we spent a great few days here. Very well equipped too, hardly needed to bring anything. Well maintained and nicely cleaned and prepared between guests. The little village is great to, very picturesque and quiet and just a few minutes drive from bigger towns and attractions. And you've got to love a lockbox! Makes checking in obsolete.
