Good location, comfortable flat with a few exceptions
We liked the location and surrounding.
Although we didn't use it, the great hall was potentially a very good additional facility. The pub in the village was very friendly & homely with good beers an an excellent range of main courses.
The flat was well appointed with good equipment. Lounge and main bedroom comfortable. The kitchen was a bit tight, the switch system for the fridge could be improved, the hot water and shower in the second bedroom erratic. Unfortunately the accident with a collapsing chair, (due to a missing screw), did affect our stay as I have a very painful back as result. Whilst I'm sure it will improve, it certainly slowed us all down when walking as well as leaving me uncomfortable. I would advise those chairs are checked regularly to avoid any repetition.
Additionally, the information provided needs amending as the local contact information appears to be out of date.
This was a great place to stay. We found it as described, spotlessly clean and tidy, very well equipped. The complex is quiet and peaceful, close to local amenities and simply beautiful surroundings.
Only negatives were that the piano in the Great Hall was badly in need of a tune (a real shame because it is a quality instrument) and the pool table was a bit ropey too, but the hall itself was a nice place to read and relax whilst the kids watched TV in the cottage.
Charming, quirky accomodation in a beautiful part of the world.
We stayed at Nell Gwyn Cottage over the new year and had a memorable few days. Windemere and Ullswater are in easy reach and we found a great walk that started from Orton itself. The property is comfortable and welcoming. Orton Hall is a fabulous setting!

The property is beautiful and the location is magnificent, maybe for so near the motorway is the only - minus point.
Thank you for your kind comments regarding our cottage. Many will regard the proximity of the M6 as a great advantage for reasons of access and convenience. The motorway - 1.5 miles away at Junction 38 - is both invisible and inaudible from the cottage. You wouldn't know it's there!
Lovely property, part of the beautiful Orton Hall
Lovely, comfortable and well equipped cottage. Being part of Orton Hall and having use of the hall’s gorgeous wood panelled common area, and the extensive grounds made the property very special. Orton is a lovely village and the surrounding area is beautiful, without the crowds of the Lake District. Communication and arrival went smoothly. We hope to return!
Nell gwyn cottage is lovely. Set in beautiful grounds with large lawns and a fountain in a gated community with birds and red squirrels visiting. The cottage is very well equipped and comfortable.
There is adequate parking available.
If using the post code on your satnav it tries to take you to an entrance that is now blocked so look out for the green metal gates a bit further down which is the main entrance.
Nell Gwyn offers a convenient central base for a variety of activities. For walkers, the Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales are just a short drive away along good roads. More locally, there are good walks direct from the cottage, while to the south, the nearby Howgill Fells offer quiet days out with panoramic views of the Pennines, the Dales and the Lakeland Fells. The quiet local lanes also offer good possibilities for cyclists, while golf is available at nearby Appleby and Ravenstonedale.
For the less energetic, there are countless sightseeing opportunities and old market towns to visit. The spectacular Settle-Carlisle railway runs through the area and there are regular boat trips on nearby Ullswater and Windermere.
Serious shoppers will enjoy Kendal, with its variety of local shops and markets and the Orton Farmers Market helps you take the tastes of Cumbria home with you.
