Our house is situated on an elevated private south west facing site enjoying sunshine throughout the entire day with an uninterrupted view of the stunning sunset.
Chalais is a quiet little town in the south of the Charente department, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, with a population hovering around 1,800. It’s tucked into a green valley along the Tude River, a tributary of the Dronne, about 42 kilometers south of Angoulême and roughly 80 kilometers northeast of Bordeaux. This puts it in a sweet spot—close enough to bigger cities for convenience but far enough to keep its rural charm intact. The landscape around it is classic Charente: rolling hills, patches of oak and chestnut forests, and fields that hint at its agricultural roots.
The town’s crown jewel is the Château de Chalais, perched on a rocky outcrop overlooking the valley. It’s got a storied past tied to the Talleyrand-Périgord family, who’ve been big players in French history since the Middle Ages. The castle’s origins go back to the 11th century. After that, it was dismantled, then rebuilt in the 16th century with a Renaissance flair. You’ll find a rare working drawbridge—one of only a handful left in France—and a mix of medieval grit and later elegance in its design. Since 2011, it’s been owned by Yves Lecoq, a French comedian known for his impressions, who’s spruced it up and opens it for tours in the summer (afternoons, except Mondays). Locals say it’s worth a visit for the views alone, stretching out over the Tude Valley.
Down in the town, Chalais feels like a step back in time. The streets are lined with pale stone houses built from the stone of the area in that endearing way old French towns do so well. The Monday market is a big deal here—it’s been running for centuries and still draws folks from nearby villages for fresh produce, cheeses, and the area’s famous "Veau de Chalais," a tender, milk-fed veal that’s a point of pride.
The Church of Saint-Martial, right by the castle, is a must-see. Built in the 12th century, it’s got Romanesque bones and a cloister that was redone in the 17th century after some rough years. It’s now part of the town’s historic fabric, listed as a monument, and occasionally hosts events like art shows or concerts. There’s also Sainte-Marie, an 11th-century church in the old quarter, and Saint-Christophe, a 19th-century addition in a hamlet nearby, showing how faith has shaped the place over time.
Life in Chalais moves at a slow pace. There’s a handful of cafés and small shops, a public pool for hot days, and an airfield (Chalais Aerodrome) if you’re into light aviation. The Tude River offers spots for fishing or just kicking back, and the surrounding countryside is laced with walking paths—nothing too strenuous, just enough to soak in the scenery. It’s not far from gems like Aubeterre-sur-Dronne, about 10 kilometers west, where you can see a jaw-dropping monolithic church carved into a cliff. Bordeaux, with its wine and bustle, is an hour’s drive southwest, and Angoulême’s comic-strip museum and medieval streets are less than an hour north.
Chalais isn’t flashy—it’s not trying to be. It’s a working town with deep roots, a touch of nobility, and a landscape that’s easy on the eyes. Perfect for someone who wants a taste of real, unpolished France without the crowds. The Charente region offers a perfect mix of relaxation and discovery for a family holiday, with the chance to experience "la France profonde" (deep France) at a leisurely pace.

This was our second holiday here and once a lovely relaxing and peaceful time in a beautiful location. The heated pool is wonderful and it's great to have aircon in the property for those extra hot days. Simon and his team always respond quickly to any requests. Highly recommended!
All the family enjoyed the lovely pool. We have special memories of our time there every day!The accommodation was spacious & comfortable though could benefit from some updating. Kitchen & utility area were well equipped & easy to use. Any issues were quickly looked into by the owner & dealt with immediately. All in all an enjoyable holiday! Thankyou to Simon particularly.
Everything you could want in a property.. facilities, comfort, location., pool, cleanliness…
Lots of beautiful restaurants in the surrounding area. Would definitely love to return. Would highly recommend

Thank you very much for the very generous feedback. We are really glad you enjoyed your stay.
We enjoyed a lovely couple of weeks in Chalais, and would highly recommend the villa and area to those who want a balance of relaxation, with some good fun activities close to hand. Simon and Sinead were responsive and attentive, communication was brilliant and the property itself was one of the best we have stayed in. Good facilities, nice and airy and the facilities of the domaine du grand tourtre were nice to have close to hand. Would definitely stay again!

Thank you for a lovely stay in the house. The kids enjoyed the sports facilities and the development is peaceful and secure. Spacious garden and house, even for 5 of us and the house could have still been comfortable with more people. Great location, close to shops etc., but still a quiet location surrounded by sunflowers.
We had a lovely couple of weeks staying here. The house is amazing. The pictures don’t do it full justice. It was much more spacious than we expected. Well equipped and great little pool. We made good use of the bbq and outdoor table. Very handy for the supermarket. Would recommend a stay in this house

Thank you very much for your very kind comments. We are really glad you enjoyed your stay and your time in Chalais.
Nice house, very pleasant to stay in ( though a door between the bedrooms, bathrooms and living room and kitchen should be installed to lower the noise level when one is asleep. )As for the swimmingpool, just great for children. The location is top for the everyday shopping ( a 8 minute- drive) and the neighbours can ’t be heard thanks to the clever layout of the estate. A final remark : the tv can’t be used by a French user as a consequence of The system of registration Another solution : à more detailled information sheet should be provided to visitors. Conclusion we highly recommend this destination and why not think of coming back .
We loved Villa Aulne! It was in a fabulous and secure gated location with a small number of similar properties, but with a large private garden parking, and very secluded. The back garden with pool was private, peaceful, and with a lovely open view over fields. Spectacular sunsets. The property was modern, spacious, clean, and had everything we needed. Aircon was a real bonus, as were comfy sofas! Pool was amazing, clean, warm, a delight. Simon and Helene were really helpful on a couple of occasions when we needed something. A perfect place for a peaceful relaxing holiday in the Dordogne. Highly recommended!

Thank you so much David. We are delighted you enjoyed your stay and very grateful for your very generous feedback.
Our stay at Villa Aulne was so relaxing and it had all the facilities for a most enjoyable stay. Situated just out of Chalais, it is set in a small hamlet of holiday villas that are spaced apart to give privacy and seclusion. On-site facilities include tennis courts, play park and bikes to explore the countryside. We used the bikes to cycle to Chalais for the morning boulangerie trip. Great location to explore Charente and beyond and on your return, there is a nice pool waiting to relax in. We experienced a heatwave during our stay with temperatures hitting 40C so very, very glad of the aircon and pool.
Thanks to Simone and Helene who were very attentive and were able to accommodate our late arrival due to last minute travel changes.
We enjoyed our stay at Villa Aulne and easily give it 5* without hesitation.

Thank you very much Allan. We are delighted you enjoyed your stay. Sinead & Simon.

We were very happy. We were very warm with the lovely wood burner as this was a winter holiday . Plenty of space in the house and a pleasant outside space. While we were there we were lucky to see a deer family of three in the farmers field.
The kitchen facilities were great everything we needed. We also had constant hot water.
I would also like to say the internet was quite fast and we had no problem connecting our devices.
All in all a relaxing stay.
Thanks
