About this property

Duart Tower a historic tower house In the Loch Lomond National Park

Duart Tower is a category C listed tower house designed in the style of Alexander (Greek) Thompson who was famed for his Italianate style of architecture. There was a later addition to the house around 1900 in the Arts and Crafts style. It is a striking design which stands out above the shore and features in several publications. It has breathtaking views down Loch Long and beyond. Duart Tower was built for the MacLeans of Duart Castle as a holiday home. The Robertson clan's coat of arms was later added to the large stained glass window which underwent renovation in recent years.

Duart Tower is steeped in history and has had some well known inhabitants, including one of the suffragettes and the soldier who was the first to be shot on Armistice day whilst playing football with the enemy. The unusual stone structure in the front garden is said to have been used as a preaching stone by John Knox during the reformation.

Beautifully furnished historic home in a breathtaking location. It comprises of sitting room, dining room, whisky-room/snug, games room, five bedrooms and two bathrooms. The house has been upgraded in recent years to offer a high specification of finish and today’s technology. It has smart TVs in the kitchen and living room and Bose sound system in ground floor with outside speakers. The kitchen which was formerly servants quarters includes, quartz worktops, painted oak doors, range style cooker, American style fridge & freezer, built in dishwasher, microwave, wine fridge, ice maker, contemporary extractor fan and is fully equipped.

There are three double rooms all with queen size beds. There is also a bunk bed room for children or lightweights as weight restricted. The fifth room is not a conventional bedroom but in the tower. It’s fantastic space for star gazing and has a super comfy single bed.

A decked area to the rear of the house offers a lovely place for alfresco entertaining. From here the views over the water are simply breathtaking. There is an outdoor pizza oven and small plunge pool, only useable during Summer months and is not fenced (any children would need to be fully supervised at all times.). NOTE the new regulations by Scottish government make it difficult to keep pool open therefore it will be closed in 2024 and covered with hardwood decking. To the side there are two large Indian stone patios both with outdoor furniture/dining areas and weber gas and charcoal bbq's.

There are acacia solid wooden floors throughout most of the principle rooms so no heels allowed - sorry.

A Very Special House
Duart Tower is a very special house with spectacular views over the Loch from all the rooms at the front. The facilities are first rate for self catering but there are also plenty of good places to eat out at nearby. Lots of things to do in the area - walks, stately homes, boat trips but it is very tempting just to stay at home and look at the view. Shona was throughout very responsive to our questions and made some very good recommendations as to things to do and places to go. Lastly although I never managed to get in to the water our 16 year old son thoroughly enjoyed the pool!

Duart tower and its location are spectacular however all that glitters is not gold.
Cleanliness is not up to standard, contents are tired in need of updating. There are condensation issues, damp and musty smell upstairs and the tower room is particularly unpleasant. The host stated her cleaner is on holiday so maybe this explains, however the kitchen requires a deep clean. The patio door had a spider infestation, hundreds of spider babies on arrival, dead insects/ wasps hanging from the skylight. We are perplexed the wardrobes and freezer are being used for storage by the host, leaving limited space for guests but most concerning bathroom drawer full of medication, tablets and creams in the reach of children not locked. No warning of this, having four children on the booking this is unacceptable and could result in an accidental overdose from multiple over counter and prescription drugs. The half eaten food in the freezer is off putting and never something we’ve encountered. The house is full of old fashioned plug adapters, most sockets are overloaded especially in the bedrooms concerning as a fire hazard. We found it equally strange that no basic guest information is provided on arrival, the whole vibe is staying in someone’s home whilst they lodge out. We chose to depart a day earlier than we’d paid for as the host became argumentative and made accusations when I responded to a departure request of listing any issues or concerns. Undisclosed neighbouring property major renovation works, very noisy from early morning to late afternoon with scaffold erected.

The sleeping was not quite to the description and beds are doubles not queens and need replacing was not comfortable at all and the sheets did not feel clean.. We had no cloths tea towels good job we had some. Ice maker leaks dont use The pool was not warm and a bit dirty when spending this amount of money should beable to use no questions asked.. On a better note we had a great time with the famliy of 7. Used the livingroom fire had a very cooler nites A lovley house in a stunning spot just think a bit over priced for what we got...
