Tourloti is a small, traditional village, the largest of a group of four, dotted across the hillside in this area which is covered in olive groves and wild flowers. It has changed little in the past few decades, and remains untouched by tourism. However, it retains a healthy vibrant Greek community, of families living and working in the local area. The village has a prominent church, school, two small mini-markets, a bakery, chemist, post office, hair dresser, two kafenions and one small traditional taverna. The narrow streets with white washed houses, flower filled alleyways, and glimpses of spectacular views, give the village a unique, timeless sense of tranquillity, far removed from modern city life.
There are many walks from and around the village, including hill and coastal walks, and the area is rich in wildlife, flora and fauna. The village, with stunning views over the Mirabello Bay, is an excellent base for exploring East Crete, the attractive towns of Aghios Nikolaos, Sitia and Ierapetra, as well as the gorges of the South coast. It also benefits from its proximity to the well known village of Mochlos, a short drive down the hillside, with its renowned fish tavernas. Beaches are available at Mochlos, Kavousi or the coastal resorts towards Aghios Nikolaos, the south or east coast.
The village is located just off the main E75 route which runs from west to east along the north coast of Crete. Tourloti is about half way between the towns of Aghios Nikolaos (40 mins) and Sitia (30mins). Heraklion airport is 1.5 hours drive.
