About this property

1828 Vermont Cottage Feet From The Famous Battenkill River

WELCOME TO THE HISTORIC SAMUEL BENEDICT HOMESTEAD

Located on the southern bank of the picturesque Battenkill River in West Arlington, Vermont, the historic 3 bedroom cottage, built in 1828, offers the perfect setting for a genuine Vermont getaway. It sleeps up to 5 guests, has a full kitchen, 1.5 bathrooms, and more than its share of rustic charm. Skiing and shopping are nearby, and there is fly fishing, kayaking, swimming and tubing just steps away. Additional amenities include an outdoor patio, modest WiFi, Bluetooth audio, Smart TV, record player, books, games, and more.

The cottage has sat at the edge of the Battenkill since the John Quincy Adams administration. Originally part of a much larger family-owned parcel, Samuel Benedict was its builder and original owner. He’s buried just 3 miles away in the St. James Episcopal Cemetery.

While many guests enjoy jumping into the river's swimming hole from the single lane bridge, others choose to join local artists to paint landscapes from it. In fact, American artist Ogden Pleissner (1905-1983), in addition to painting western landscapes, images of the New England maritimes, and serving as a WWII war correspondent in the Aleutian Islands, also painted the river scene from the bridge directly in front of the house in 1978. The piece is entitled “The Battenkill at Benedict’s Crossing.”

This rustic property has the genuine Vermont flavor to satisfy the solitary purist, but enough creature comforts to make microwave popcorn and stream Netflix (most of the time). We hope to be able to share it with you soon.

Cosy Vermont cottage by the Battenkill River
Vermont in the fall was on my bucket list (we're Australian, so not much fall colour there). We had the chance so I looked for a cosy cottage in the woods and found Sarah's place. It is well located on a quiet road by the river with forest on either side of the valley. Nearby are Robert Frost, Norman Rockwell and Lincoln Family places of interest. Some great walks nearby and other towns of interest not far away; Manchester for shopping, Dorset is cute and a good farmers market on a Saturday morning. The cottage is well equipped, quaintly furnished lounge, dining and bedrooms. There was just two of us so we only used the main bedroom, the bed was very comfortable. Didier, the caretaker, was very helpful and made sure we knew what we needed to know, before leaving us to it. We loved it.

Quaint cottage, great location
Stayed here for an event in Arlington. The house was super convenient and only a few minutes drive to Arlington. The view of the river from the house was peaceful. The cottage was quiet and clean. For fly fishing, it was great to stay on the banks of the Batten Kill and it was an easy drive to other streams in the area too.

Very nice! Excellent location! Very accessible host! Kitchen could have been a bit cleaner (we needed to check/wash dishes and utensils before using them)

Beautiful views in cozy cottage
We stayed in the Cottage at Benedict Crossing for almost three weeks working remotely two weeks from this picturesque place. Morning walks along the river were so refreshing and serene. We got a good bit of snow a couple of days and were well stocked with fire wood to keep us cozy. There was a snow shovel to help us clear the walking path to get down to my son who picked us up to spend the day with our new grandson. The only thing missing was a washer/dryer but we just took clothes to my son’s to wash - not a big deal if not staying long. Great communication with owners and we had a sweet and thoughtful gift on the table when we arrived. Highly recommend this historic cottage!

Cozy Cottage
This cozy cottage is a true Vermont location with amazing river & mountain views. My daughter said she loved the vibe, it made her feel so comfortable as soon as she walked in. Also, the fresh cinnamon rolls on the dining room table upon our arrival was a fabulous touch.
