Cliff Railway Apartment is located above the station and ticket office at the base of the longest funicular electric cliff railway in Britain, which has been transporting visitors to the summit since opening in 1896. Situated at the northern end of Aberystwyth promenade, the apartment boasts very comfortable accommodation with sea views from the kitchen and direct views over the railway from the bedrooms. Guests are offered free passes on the railway for the duration of their stay (please note there are reduced operating days and times from November to mid March).
The Aberystwyth Cliff Railway operated on a water balance system until electrification in 1921. Today the carriages are hauled to the summit at a stately four miles per hour, and travel majestically to the summit of Constitution Hill, rising dramatically from the sea, providing spectacular and uninterrupted views of the town, Cardigan Bay, and on a clear day, 26 mountain peaks spanning much of the length of Wales. Once at the summit visitors can experience the views afforded by the one of the world’s largest camera obscuras, which offers a bird’s eye view of 1000 square miles of land and seascape. There are also fascinating historical displays, a kids play area, a well-stocked gift shop, and a cafe selling delicious meals, homemade snacks and cakes. The café itself was used for filming during the popular TV detective series "Hinterland" as were many locations around Aberystwyth.
Just a short stroll from the apartment is the beach and promenade, lined with Victorian buildings and leading to the pier. There are plenty of opportunities for shopping and a wide choice of places to eat in this university town, as well as castle ruins, the harbour, the National Library of Wales with a visitor centre, and Aberystwyth Arts Centre, a bustling entertainment venue. The surrounding hills hold the visible remains of an iron age fort and also a monument to Wellington and, once climbed offer stunning views of Cardigan Bay. Also not to be missed is a trip on the lovely Vale of Rheidol steam train, departing from Aberystwyth and travelling through the stunning Welsh countryside to the beautiful Devil’s Bridge waterfalls.
Within very easy reach of Aberystwyth, there are golden sandy beaches, colourful seaside towns and villages, and places to explore such as the Ynyslas National Nature Reserve dominated by a sand dune landscape and home to an array of rare plants, wading birds and wildlife, including colourful orchids early in the summertime. With views inland and across the estuary to Aberdyfi, it is a great spot for walking or relaxing with boardwalks and trails through the dunes. Bwlch Nant-yr-Arian Forest Centre is a large woodland site with a host of activities including walks, cycle trails and red kite feeding with a shop and information centre. The peaceful wooded and landscaped Hafod Estate in the Ystwyth Valley has a variety of waymarked walks.

Had a great stay at the Cliff Railway. Nicely decorated and spotlessly clean in a great location. Owners friendly and responsive.Only thing we would change is the wifi. Fine for browsing/email but not strong enough for streaming etc.Looking forward to a return visit.

We had a wonderful week which began with a very warm welcome from staff. The cliff railway was only open at weekends, being low season, but we went up and down twice and the views were spectacular. The apartment comes with free railway passes. The cafe at the top of constitution hill was excellent with very high covid cleanliness standards and delightful staff. The smart TV has netflix & BBC iplayer. The beds were exceptionally comfortable. The bathroom was spacious and the shower unit was very clean. The apartment was warm and cosy (we were there during a stormy winter week). The sea views were a bonus. There were a few issues (nothing that would stop us going back) but the sofa and single armchair in the lounge would not be sufficient for four adults. There were some small cleanliness issues (perhaps because we were the first guests following the second Wales lockdown). The windowsills in the kitchen and bathroom were very gritty and dusty with a few dead flies and one of the kitchen cupboards had leftover food items as did the freezer (which also had 2-3 inches of old ice on all the shelves). We would stay again and the minor issues have not put us off.

Very modern and tidy apartment on the seafront with everything you could need for a beachside town break.
Being right above the cliff side train I expected it to be a bit noisy but we didn’t even notice the trains and they only ran between 10 and 6, as the listing described (I expected some staff to be going up and down outside of these hours but they seemed to use the road at the back instead).
Communication with owner was excellent, immediate and friendly response.
Not a negative, just an observation but the apartment WiFi has a lot of ping, so for kids trying to watch things on iPads in the evening or play games online, its not ideal but it’s fine for web searches and there are some board games to play instead.
Can definitely recommend the kite sanctuary about 15 minute drive down the road, with a pleasant tea room and newly build play area for the kids.

A qwerky flat.
A qwerky flat. Excellent for two or four people provided that they can manage the dozen or so stairs at the entrance. Evening events may mean the railway is used into the night, so be prepared for some, but not excessive noise. We will be happy to return.

Really lovely stay.
Really lovely stay. Saw dolphins in the bay most days. Great location and the cliff railway is great with a lovely cafe. Staff in the ticket office were really friendly. Only one complaint. Amazing views from the apartment hampered by the grubby outside windows.

The views from the Cliff Railway Apartment were amazing. Some windows look out to the sea, another looks down a long street to Pen Dinas at the far side of Aber and the bedroom windows look out at Constitution Hill and the Cliff Railway.
Though the building is Victorian, the apartment is completely modern and warm and comfortable, even for an early spring break.

It wasn’t the best weather as we arrived during Storm Erik and the sash windows did let quite a bit of a breeze through. But when the storm had passed we managed to get out and enjoy the promenade walk and took in the small town of Aberystwyth. We especially like Mikeys Cafe as we had young children and there was a small play area available. The student population also gives the town a youngish feel but we didn’t feel out of place.
