Perfect for horse lovers, Middleham is renowned for its long history and also serves as a thriving racehorse community. Guests will be able to watch as top class racehorses are ridden daily through the village and up to the gallops in the fields at the edge of the village. Ideal for a luxurious romantic break, there are many pubs, restaurants and cafes within easy walking distance and all are well known for serving good quality, local food and produce. Middleham Castle lies just behind Barbican Cottage and was once the home of Richard III and was referred to in former times as the “Windsor of the North”. Middleham is a great place for families too with plenty of attractions to visit and explore within a short driving distance. Local attractions include the popular Chocolate Factory, Tennants Auction House and tea pottery which are all located in Leyburn just two and a half miles away as well as The Forbidden Corner which is a hidden folly offering twists, turns and excitement around every corner, and is situated just four miles away from Barbican Cottage. Another popular attraction is the Wensleydale Railway which stops in Leyburn and travels through some of the most spectacular scenery in the Yorkshire Dales. Guests who enjoy walking, cycling or even just exploring will find an abundance of established public footpaths, cycle paths and bridleways that lead right from the village itself onwards towards and through the Dales and beyond. A visit to the Dales Countryside Museum is also a must. The scenery here is magnificent at any time of year and guests will find themselves on a journey through heather covered grouse moorland, open countryside, natural woodland and pretty, little Yorkshire villages. A little further afield, but still within easy driving distance, guests will be able to visit Castle Bolton, Jervaulx Abbey and Wensleydale Creamery as well as Aysgarth Falls, Hawes, Gayle Mill, York, Harrogate and Ripon.

Delightful and most comfortable cottage.
Delightful and most comfortable cottage. Particularly enjoyed the courtyard to relax in after a day's walking, while cooking in the kitchen was a pleasure; the wide range of utensils etc meant that just about any meal was possible. If cooking isn't what you want to do on holiday then there is a shop just across the road, a pub next door and a Fish and Chip takeway next to that.

Lovely well equiped cottage located in centre of Middleham a beautiful village steeped in history.Good base for touring Yorkshire Dales and close to numerous restaurants and pubs in Middleham and Leyburn.Would recommend Barbican Cottage to others.Only thing I would recommend is that the outside furniture would benefit with a spruce up.The garden itself is lovely private and peaceful.

Barbican cottage is very clean and spacious.
Barbican cottage is very clean and spacious. Very well equipped in the kitchen. Lots of information provided. It is also very quiet as it is tucked away from the main road.. the Wensleydale dale hotel is a nice place to eat. Middleham is a very nice quiet place to say and it is nice to see all the race horses walking through. Good choice of pubs also. God area for walking with lots of choices nearby and also locally. Richmond is well worth a visit. The station at Richmond is a must with everything under one roof. Eating place, 3 cinema screens, gift shop, local retailers and also a small brewery and bar.

This is a lovely cottage in a good location.
This is a lovely cottage in a good location. It was lovely and clean, with excellent facilities. Although it was mid February and very cold and grey, (no surprise there) the cottage was always nice and warm when we came back after exploring the area. Another bonus is the enclosed garden, which was ideal for letting the dog have a mooch around without having to worry that she would wander off. There is a bus service from Middleham to Ripon, or Middleham to Richmond, which runs a couple of times a day, if you don't feel like driving, but fancy exploring by bus. We would definitely stay there again, the next time we fancy a break in the lovely Yorkshire Dales.

Enjoyed a comfortable and relaxing stay here in Middleham over new year.
Enjoyed a comfortable and relaxing stay here in Middleham over new year.Barbican Cottage is a very good place to stay. Clean and well equipped. Kitchen had everything (apart from a veg/potato peeler) to cook our New Year's Day Turkey crown meal. Good wifi throughoutLovely and warm for a winters break. Nice sized and well equipped shower room and toilet, all immaculate on arrival.TV in main bedroom too, helped relax with morning cuppa.Didn't use the garden/courtyard as winter but this would be nice and private for a spring/summer place to sit and relax.Managed to get parked on the cobbles just by the alley to the entrance. Unloading/loading the car otherwise could be a chew.Suggested improvement would be to put a decent sized Smart TV in main lounge. The Freesat one is okay, but choice of entertainment on those wet and windy stay indoors days is limited without access to Netflix/You tube etc. Overall, would stay again and happy to recommend.

Lovely cosy cottage in the centre of Middleham.
Lovely cosy cottage in the centre of Middleham. A Smart tv is a must & a larger tv especially for cold wet afternoons. The radiator in the lounge was no working properly warm at the top cold @ the bottom. The electric log burner was not working at all so it did feel cold in the lounge.

Well equipped cottage, comfortable but can be a little dark on the inside and would benefit from bet
Well equipped cottage, comfortable but can be a little dark on the inside and would benefit from better lighting in the lounge in particular. TV and Wifi were good.
Cleaning could benefit from being a bit more thorough (lounge side table and loo pedestal weren't clean). A high level dust is also needed to remove the cobwebs.
