About this property
Giacomina - Converted stone barn, mountain village, spectacular views, pool
Conveniently located 10km from the Rioveggio exit of the PANORAMICO branch of the A1 motorway, backbone to Italy, between Bologna and Florence, 6Stanco is situated at the beginning of the Apennine mountain range on the southern slope of Monte Stanco, with stunning mountain views towards Tuscany. Set in the intimate village of Stanco, 6Stanco is a group of stone buildings surrounding a Farmstead courtyard, originally the main landowner's home, private chapel, barn and haywain, residence of their farm workers and harvesters. Renovated in 2011-12, the converted chestnut-drying barn, Olimpia, is a three-bedroomed independant villa, beside the garden and the 5x11m pool, completed in 2013. Giacomina and Giuseppina are the two mirror-image, studio flats on the raised ground floor of the converted haywain and cattle stalls, each with its own balconied entrance. We can accommodate groups of friends or extended families for unforgettable holidays! We live most of the year in the restored main stone house; also a Bed & Breakfast with three double rooms available. The lower level of the barn is the 60sq.m Course Room; adjacent to the main sun terrace. There is Horse riding at our local Pegasus Riding Stables and trekking for seasoned riders. At 600m.a.s.l. no air-conditioning is necessary here, thanks to cooler evening breezes from nearby woods and the mountain panorama is breathtaking.

Epic travellers, in spite of the change in route to arrive here, due to the terrible flooding in the Po valley of Romagna that had just occurred.
Delightful guests - highly recommended.
So nice to have met you :)
A wonderful property in a fantastic setting. Ruth was a perfect host giving us useful information. Village was beautiful and the property provided every comfort you need for a wondetful holiday
We loved this property - it was like living in a tree house with a loft. Excellent host and facilities.
Easy access via train to Bologna. Avoid the Bologna chaos with a calming train ride back to the local station.
We will stay here again
We thoroughly enjoyed our 2 week stay a 6Stanco. Ruth is an excellent host, providing us with lots of advice both before and during our stay. The appartment is very comfortable and well equipped. Stanco is a small village but the local shop in Grizzana is well stocked and larger supermarkets are available in nearby towns. Both Florence and Bologna can be visited from the local train station, with rail fares making it a cheaper option than driving. There are a couple of restaurants within walking distance. We only visited Nel Castagneto where we had excellent lunches and wine.Definitely recommend visiting this area of Italy

Thank you Belinda & Paul for choosing to stay with us and teaching me about the local bird species :)
You are excellent guests and it was my pleasure to host you.
We had a wonderful time, the cottage was just right for us and it was no problem that our son came later in the week to stay - Ruth simply prepared everything for him on the day he arrived! The surroundings are fantastic, the beautiful garden with a view and the pool were just what we were looking for. Great places to eat out are also nearby and the little kitchen is perfect for preparing meals as well.
After some confusion with the details of the property description, Ruth and Andrea were immensely accommodating in switching us to the room I originally intended. I cannot thank yhem enough.

Early spring in the mountains. Quiet and beautiful. Super location, close to station/cultural cities as Bologna and Florence. Fantastic view from the old barn with the most charming old ceiling. Super well equipped apartment. We can only recommend visiting Ruth in her wonderful medieval home. She is a fantastic host meeting you with great hospitality. Go there!!

Thanks so much for your lovely review and for choosing to stay with us - our absolute pleasure to meet you 🌝🌝🌝
very warm welcome, detailed introduction to everything you need to know for the stay and what's around; very clean flat, well equipped with everything you need, even the "small" things; Ruth is super-friendly and discrete, very helpful in all cases; this is a well maintained private property, pool is super to cool-down, sun at that pool from early morning till later evening (be careful...); phenomenal view into the countryside;
so if you would like to relax, this is a perfect place (we had only 2 other guests during our stay);
fast internet in the flat and even outside at the pool

Fabulous place to unwind & explore Emilia-Romagna & Tuscany
Set up in the hills, Stanco is a great place to base yourself if you want to combine rest & relaxation with a little bit of sightseeing in the region of Emilia-Romagna & also Tuscany. Our 3rd time staying here. We have done day trips to Florence, Lucca, Pisa, Ferrara, Bologna, San Marino, Siena, Montecatini Terme and many more... There is a train station in Grizzana Morandi is you want to leave the car parked up & go visit somewhere rather than driving. The swimming pool is great & there is nothing like buying your fresh meat, cheeses, bread in Vergato & having lunch outdoors looking at the stunning rolling mountains & valley scenery. Similarly at night sitting out under the stars enjoying a drink. Nel Castagneto restaurant is just 2 minutes drive away back in the direction of Grizzana Morandi & Cristina is very welcoming & makes the best Italian dishes we ever tasted. Everything is perfect for a lovely family holiday. Ruth & Andrea are great hosts & they even host a dinner for guests who are staying to meet each other & socialise. We will definitely return again in the future.

Delighted to welcome your family here every time, Ian and to see your kids growing up! I chose to live here and am the biggest fan of the area and everything it has to offer. Compared to more touristy hot spots of the Nearest Art cities and Northern Tuscany - you eat better here at half the price. Best wishes and hope to welcome you again.
We truly had an amazing time renting this fabulous studio country house.
This property had stunning views of mountains & countryside it had a veranda style window and bi folding doors. With open wooden beams, tall cieling with lots of light and a large framed bookcase filled with a great selection of reading books.
A self contained little kitchen well stocked with utensils and kitchenware. A lovely solid wooden kitchen table with wooden chairs. A comfy long sofa and a tv and sat tv box. A clothes rail with lots of hangers and a large wooden chest with 6 drawers. Lots of little lights plenty of electric points and plenty of pamphlets and maps with information on the surrounding areas and of the total region.
The bathroom was clean and large with a power shower and flushing toilet lots of hot water and good central heating.
The little mezzanine bedroom had a very large clean cozy bed with lovely cotton bedding. Bedside cabinets and lights. With a long wodden chest with little individual boxes. We slept so very well for 5 nights.
Beautiful space to relax and recupetate with fantastc views.
Great communication very fast responses in both English and Italian speaking owners.
We booked 2 days before arriving and everyone was completely super about our very short notice booking.
The owners were very kind and thoughtful so very friendly and sociable to me and my partner. We had a fabulous few hours with them chatting drinking and eating cheese. They shared their local knowlwdge and experiences with us making us feel utterly relaxed and part of the family. We thank them from our heart for their generousity and time. We could not asked for a better romantic property searching vacation.
Cannot wait to return.
Thanks so much also to Claudia who was brilliant.

Our pleasure to meet you and share our local knowledge. Delighted you enjoyed your trip and happy to welcome you back anytime! Many thanks for choosing to stay with us.

Many thanks for leaving the apartment so tidy - it was our pleasure to host you both :)

Thank you Henning, it was my pleasure to host your lovely family. I am so so pleased you enjoyed your stay at 6Stanco and the village. Thank you for leaving the Villa so tidy and clean 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
We had a great stay in Giacomina and the apartment was perfect for a family with 2 or 3 childrens.
The pool was very nice and clean.
Ruth is a fantastic host that really does everything for her guests.
Walking distance to restaurants.
The only minus was that there could had been a fantastic view if they had cut down some bushes and trees around the pool and outside the apartment window.
Thank you for a great stay!

Thoroughly enjoyed our week near Grizzana Morandi.
The accommodation complex run by Ruth & Andrea is wonderful & quiet. They are very pleasant people to deal with and know how to entertain the small group of people staying here this week at the pizza & wine night in their kitchen.
This was exactly as we thought it would be ... there are a couple of very nice restaurants nearby ... Ruth can point you in the right direction.
This was a great place to stay for us (2 adults and toddler). The villa was clean and beautifully presented. The pool was lovely and set against the amazing views.
Ruth is a wonderful host and is there to answer any questions you have.
the train station is only a 5-10 min car ride away and we easily went to Bologna,Florence, Modena and Pisa from the accommodation.there are some lovely restaurants nearby for lunch too.
I would highly recommend this property.

About the host
Hosted by Ruth Hodkinson
We probably watched too many 'buy a ruin and do it up ' television programmes, but that's what we chose to do, left the big city and now we live most of the year in the community of this small mountain village. Ruth, an architect by profession, was born and educated in London, UK. Andrea is Bolognese and is a Restaurant food company director. We have two daughters and a son. We like good food, wine and when not travelling, at least planning and discussing the next trip!
Why they chose this property
Beautiful, stylish, comfortable and well-equipped stone buildings. New, modern convenience but with architectural character where you can relax and enjoy yourselves. Situated in a safe, peaceful village with friendly locals and very helpful hosts next door! Great swimming pool and plenty of space for al fresco dining, sun bathing or just reading a book in the garden. Only 12 minutes to the closest motorway exit which is between Bologna and Florence so very well-located for daytrips all over Emilia Romagna and Tuscany, even as far as Venice. The perfect combination of cultural visits to a variety of important Art Cities, or more low-key trips locally, by day, then coming back to your beautiful 6Stanco apartment each evening to cooler, balmier temperatures, after a sometimes stiflingly-hot, inner-city visit in mid-summer, with no need for air-con here, breath-taking sunsets across the Reno valley, less noise than the bustling towns and cities and easy parking! Unforgettably fantastic holidays!
What makes this property unique
Our complimentary, weekly, summer dinners under the ancient grapevine in the company of the other interesting guests. Animated by master funster, Andrea. Relaxing in a private homestead and garden, not a huge impersonal complex, with a lovely pool. Courses in Regional cookery, English, Yoga, Painting, Massage, Horse-riding and Ceramics can be offered: We run English language courses in June and September, Ceramics is available if requested in advance and if a potter is available. Johann runs a Painting Course every September. The local 'Nel Castagneto' restaurant can do a regional cookery demonstration course, usually a Tuesday afternoon, throughout the summer. Hatha Yoga available in Pian di Setta and Massage can be organised in the summer if requested sufficiently in advance. Our shared, inside- knowledge of the best places to visit in this relatively un-tourist-trodden area, plus what to avoid when you day-trip further afield.
