About this property
Isle of Colonsay Scottish Island Holiday, Southern Hebrides, Scotland
Highfield has wonderful panoramic views to the Atlantic Ocean and a garden of a third of an acre to enjoy. There are 5/6 bedrooms accommodating 2 to10 people as well as a modern fitted kitchen and two living rooms.
Colonsay was recently named in the top 10 “Under-The-Radar Islands of The World” It has glorious golden beaches (Kiloran Bay has been voted 2nd Best Beach in the UK) It is also home to golden eagles, wild goats, colonies of seals and a huge range of flora and fauna. Amenities include a hotel, pub, café, bookshop and a local village shop. Many possible activities include walking, beachcombing, drinks at the pub, kayaking, fishing, golf, cycling, eating out at the hotel or café, fast boat trips and of course most importantly relaxing away from it all.
Most people reach Colonsay by a wonderful 2.5 hour ferry journey from the town of Oban on the mainland of Scotland. The dramatic sea route takes you past many islands including Mull, Seil and Jura and once on the ferry your holiday really starts as you leave the mainland behind. The island can also be reached from a second ferry port called Kennacraig and by air and fast boat from near Oban. Bear in mind that unless you are prepared to cycle everywhere it is essential to bring a car with you, as although the total road mileage is quite small there is no regular public transport available on Colonsay.
To maximise the panoramic views to the Atlantic Ocean, Highfield is an 'upside-down' house. The master bedroom with en suite bathroom, living room and large fitted kitchen are all upstairs which means the spectacular views out to sea and over the island can be enjoyed from these rooms and from two balconies attached to the living room and kitchen. Being an upside down house, one couple can comfortably rent the upstairs accommodation as a 'studio' type home (at a discount outside of the summer high season) or if there are more in the group then we can open up the additional bedrooms needed downstairs and price according to the number of guests.
Downstairs there are a further 4 bedrooms plus an additional living room which is perfect for kids to relax in and play games. In total the house has three double bedrooms, one twin bedroom, and one bedroom with a single plus a bunk bed and there is also a sofa bed in the downstairs living room. There are a total of five bathrooms plus a porch and a utility room with washing machine.
The two living rooms seat 14 people between them. 10 upstairs and 4 downstairs. There is a washing machine and an additional fridge/freezer in the utility room and the kitchen has a double oven with 6 electric rings.
The garden extends to one third of an acre and looks over the community of Kilchattan to the Atlantic where you can watch the sun set over the Ocean. The garden is mainly grassed with guests children in mind and the next door neighbours are a field of Hebridean sheep! There is plenty of room for several cars to park and further views are over the crofts and hills that make up Kilchattan.

We were 6 friends over for a 'wild swimming' holiday. Highfield was a fantastic place to stay. The kitchen and living area was comfortable, spacious and extremely well equipped. The bedrooms were all cosy and comfortable and the showers were hot. Nick was extremely helpful for providing info about the house and island before we arrived and we were very grateful that we couod stay an extra couple of days when the ferry was cancelled. Woukd love to come back one day.
...for taking in the beauty and solitude of Colonsay! The house is lovely and we could not have asked for a better location.
Thank you for sharing it with us!
What an incredible time we have had on the wonderful island of Colonsay! We were blown over by the beauty of the island and all it had to offer. Nick was fantastic at communicating and giving us all of the details we needed to make the trip such a success. The house, Highfield, was in the best location on the island. Perfect warm breeze and easy to access beaches, small store yet feel "away from it all" and in a really peaceful setting. We cannot wait to return already!! Thanks so much again for lending us your beautiful home.

Thanks very much Beccy for taking the time to review your stay at Highfield and provide such nice feedback. It has been a pleasure hosting you and your group and we very much look forward to welcoming you back in the future. Best, Nick
The photos don’t do it justice! Perfect house for group of 3 families with one dog. Big grounds with grass and large driveway. The sit-outery was off limits due to the wind but has great views. Inside Plenty of space and views in all directions. Porch has lots of room for wet clothes and boots.
Lots of storage in kitchen and fridge space which is important when catering for 12. Host sent though lots of information ahead of the stay and we had a great time
Exploring the island. Kids and adults loved exploring the beaches and crabbing from Scalasiag pier. Woods and gardens at Colonsay House great to explore and lots of wildlife to spot.
All round great house for a group and Colonsay like a mini Scotland, perfect and hope to return.

Thanks very much for the review Hannah! We are very happy you all had such an enjoyable time at the house and on Colonsay. You would be very welcome to return in the future!
Highfield is a lovely house, perfect for eight of us (4 elderly couples). We cycled, walked, kayaked, golfed, ate in and out, crashed an American wedding on Kiloran beach, and generally had a great time. Note: if you are walkingvthe Strand to Oronsay, either wear wellies, or be prepared to get wet feet!
The house is great, it met the needs of a very varied group and let us have much needed and long overdue family time together. Absolutely stunning beaches minutes away. The house is very well equipped and felt like a home away from home. We feel that Colonsay will get better with every visit.
This was a beautiful house & we had a great time with our family of 8.
The house was well equipped & had everything that you would need for a self catering holiday. It was ideal for We would definitely go back & recommend this property if you plan to visit Colonsay.

Thanks very much for taking the time to review Highfield Mike, great to hear you enjoyed your stay and exploring your MacPhee clan heritage on Colonsay.
We went as three families, grandparents , son with daughter in law and two young children, and another son and fiancée. The house was spacious and very well equipped, home from home. You could not wish for more and the weather was brilliant too.
The owner kindly changed the entry date as the ferry on Saturday had been cancelled. Thank you. A stunning island.

Thanks very much for the kind feedback Fiona. You were our first guests of the year after we delayed re-opening, to give the island a bit of breathing space after lock down and it is good to now have Highfield open and helping get the island economy get restarted again after a difficult 2020 for the resident population of Colonsay.
This was a wonderful property for a family break. Loved the balconies to catch the sunrise and sunset at each end of the property. Lots of space for 10 adults, 1 child and 2 dogs! It helps so much having all the bathrooms.
Colonsay is a beautiful, remote, calm, peaceful island. We had a wonderful time at the beaches, cycling, searching in rock pools, and the local hotel was great for eating out. It is really relaxing.
I would highly recommend Highfield and would definitely book it again!

Wonderful house with everything we needed for a great holiday. Warm and comfortable.
We arrived in the dark but all lights on to welcome us. Thank you. Loved the piano in the hall. Lots of games and jigsaws. Children enjoyed bodyboarding at kiloran beach. Beautiful. Lots of sand dunes to play in and hills to climb. Watched seals at the golf course beach. Warm welcome at the hotel sampling local produce. Local gin and beer very good too. Amazing holiday for all ages.

A lovely airy spacious property with sandy beaches a short drive away.
We were a group of seven staying in the property. Plenty of room for all of us. We loved sitting out on the balcony in the morning and evening listening to the sound of the sea and the birds. Plenty of easy walks from the house with the local amenities a ten minute drive away. Colonsay is a lovely island and the house was great.

Americans love Colonsay
Highfield House was exactly what we needed from our long trip from America, and exhausting road trip in Scotland. What a delight it was when we arrived on the Isle Colonsay, and drove up to this lovely house. It was cozy, tidy, and spacious. If you need a place where you need peace and quiet this is the place. We were all just amazed with the beauty of the home, and of course, the beauty that surrounded the home. We will definitely be staying in this exact home again when we come back to Colonsay. This home (and surrounding activities) was the highlight of our two week holiday in Scotland.

FABULOUS HOUSE WITH AMAZING VIEW OF ATLANTIC OCEA
WOW! What an absolutely fabulous week we've all had at Highfield!
Fantastic house in a stunning location with the most breathtaking 360 degree views of the Island and the Atlantic Ocean.....loved watching the sunset from the living room balcony with a glass of the local Wild Island Gin....it went down a treat!!
The facilities are just super...the owners have thought about everything we needed to make our stay a great one. There's also plenty of room for the children to play and for us adults to chill.....the games provided are a big thumbs up from us all as well !
Colonsay is truly a hidden gem, the beaches are amazing with pure white powder sand and crystal clear water which we loved swimming in.
The locals are so friendly and made us feel very welcome. Make sure you pay a visit to The Gallery shop next to the ferry terminal, there are lots of lovely handmade items for sale in there.
We fell in love with Colonsay and can't wait to return to Highfield, it's the best holiday house we've ever rented....thanks!

Thanks Sam your kind comments which are much appreciated. We call Colonsay 'Scotland's Secret Island' as so few people you meet have ever been there or even heard of it. A lot of first time visitors are amazed at how much beauty is packed into one relatively small island. Thanks again and we look forward to welcoming you back in the future. Best regards Nick & Lynne

Fantastic property on a wonderful island
A great week for all in attendance (8 of us in total) staying in Nick & Lynne's property situated in a brilliant location on the island. The property itself is very well appointed, with large open plan living space upstairs providing fantastic sea views (and sunsets), together with a lovely master suite, whilst the downstairs living accommodation has the remaining bedrooms and utility room. Everything about the property is set up for the holiday you will have on the island, be this being out and about on the sandy beaches all day or heading out for wet walks in the Hebridean summer showers, with functional wooden and stone floors (with underfloor heating no less!) making the property an ideal base for the week. Cannot recommend highly enough, thanks!

Nice and cozy
We have been there in winter for a few weeks. This modern and well equipped house gives you even in winter, with all that storms coming and going, a cozy and sheltered feeling.
Great views of the atlantic from the living room, very quiet island and many opportunities for walking on beaches and hills. The communication with the helpful owner Nick was descent and nice.

Fantast house with amazing views of the Atlantic !
The house was well equipped and was by far the most comfortable we have stayed in on the Island. The views from the living room are breathtaking and change with the weather. If you want luxury and comfort this is the house. Ten people dissapear in the size of the house. Cannot fault it and we will definately be back again and again.

Our favourite Colonsay accommodation
We would wholeheartedly recommend this house. Superbly well maintained, spacious with a great ocean view. In the centre of the island making everywhere very accessible.
Lots of bathrooms and living space.
TIP: Ideal for a large party OR a couple as the bedroom floor can be shut off leaving master bedroom, living space, balcony and view.
We look forward to our next visit

Peaceful, comfortable and well located
Highfield was exactly what we were looking for - peaceful, comfortable, and well located. There were only two of us so we only used the upstairs areas, but the house is perfect for larger groups. Every evening we could watch the sunset over the sea from the living room.
In terms of mod cons, Highfield was very well equipped, with good heating, good size fridge and freezer and laundry facilities. The fact that the house was dog friendly was the most important factor for us, and the enclosed garden was a bonus. We would definitely stay here again.

Lovely property which met our expectations.
The house was perfect for our family gathering. It had everything we needed and it was well maintained. The open plan kitchen, dining and living area on the upper level was our favourite part of the house. It was so easy and straightforward to book the house and everything went without a hitch. We visited the hotel on the Island one evening for dinner which was lovely. They made us feel very welcome. Overall the house and our visit to Colonsey was a success.

Perfect base for a 70th birthday family holiday
The previous reviews say it all - a very well presented, high quality property with lots of room for the 6 adults and 4 children in our party. It compares more than favourably with other properties we have rented on Colonsay and elsewhere, and the layout worked particularly well. So yes, the property was as described, it was very clean and well maintained, and the owners were very friendly and helpful.
We have been to Colonsay many times and can recommend it wholeheartedly. It was a delight to see our grandchildren running free and their parents relaxing!
May at the pantry cooked a mega birthday cake, and the hotel rescued us by bringing a leg of lamb from Oban for my birthday dinner when we couldn't source one on the island - kindness indeed! Archie the bicycle was his usual affable self.
Colonsay is beguiling and we love it, but I do wish that some of the islanders would tidy up their land and gardens - an island that is so dependent on tourism really needs all of its residents to care for its environment.
