Hand crafted getaway in the jungle of East Hawaii. Conveniently located near to Kehena black sands beach along the scenic red road and is ten minutes to the Kalapana lava flow on the magical Puna side of the Big Island. Organically built with reclaimed and locally harvested materials it offers a cozy nook to relax under the umbrella of Pele's homeland. Near to the ocean this Hawaiian style cottage has an open airy feel and is nestled into the jungle of east Hawaii. The kitchen has open shelving for easy navigation. It is furnished with a love seat, recliner, beautiful mango wood desk, and a bookshelf made from the sacred Ohia tree (the first tree to grow out of the freshly cooled lava). The entire cottage frame is sculpted from this beautiful wood. The indoor bath has a roomy slate tiled walk in shower. There is an outdoor claw foot tub (undercover of clear roofing) on the lanai for soaking. The bedroom offers a comfy king sized cotton futon. There is a washer on the front lanai for your convenience. The thin walls and screened windows allow for a sense of closeness to nature while giving shelter from the elements. The cottage has lots of character and is extremely magical in the evening light. It is not uncommon to see the famous Hawaiian geckos scampering along the framing. There is a private entrance from the street.

First off, I can tell Joe put a lot of love into this property and it shows! The hut looks like it was man made and with a lot of love and care.
Unfortunately, we had to leave early due to the mosquitoes and cockroaches being a big problem. When I read the description of the house, I was under the impression that it is completely screened off from the outside elements but there are openings everywhere and my partner and I became a feast for the mosquitos by the first night. We thought we could bear it but when the cockroaches were discovered in the middle of the night, my girlfriend broke down and I had to book a new place that would offer a bit more shelter. I also found it hard to sleep the two nights we did stay as we were so close to another house and driveway where a lot of people would come and go. All of this with no window to close made us feel like we had little to no privacy.

Great place, great host!
Joe is a great host! Super nice guy, and available but not intrusive. The Li'l Red Tropical Farm Cottage is spacious and clean, and well appointed with everything you could need, even for a long stay.

Liked: Cleanliness, staff & service, room comfort
I liked being secluded and the quiet....a tv and a away to cool off from the humidity other than a fan would be helpful

Loved everything about the property and the area..
This cottage was a wonderful place to stay. Loved the openness of feeling like you were sleeping outside, peaceful and quiet. I understand not everyone is a Frog fan, but to have those frogs serenade you to sleep every night was amazing.. We enjoyed all the beaches, the scenery. Seaview area was our favorite. Sunday night at the park was very cool, and being able to walk and enjoy the local life was great. Wednesday nights at uncle Roberts was really cool to. All the amazing food to pick from, music, vendors, all in all, we loved the entire trip. Didn't have much relaxing time, was a little business trip too, but we will definitely be back.. got some Property that needs built on. So we will be back for sure. I highly recommend this cottage, cozy and comfortable. Slept like a baby every night. We hope to stay here again on our return.. Thanks for everything Joe!! Amazing place... mahalo 🌺🌴 Drew & Deanna

About the host
Hosted by Joe Hoffman
Aloha, I made a lifestyle decision to move to Hawaii in 2005. I fell in love with the Big Island for the first time in 97. Since then I've explored homesteading and a closer connection to our land. I have been building and creating. Now I am ready to share the house with travelers who visit this magical place. I am into a peaceful sustainable existence, that gives rest to a fast moving civilization. Sometimes it is enough to just look at the stars, and here you can see them well, or just return to the original TV, a nice relaxing fire. And I love to cook on the flames, so simple, so good. Sharing food is my favorite form of communion. I love slow cooking, whether it be smoking or stew making. Slower and longer is just better if you ask me. I am a builder, and as a builder the most gratifying thing is to see people enjoying the manifestations that have been created. Sometimes the focus of what it means to construct something for the utilitarian purpose gets lost in the process. But, the magic is always underlying everything, so many times pure serendipity is right there, reminding us. The intention is everything and construed in all the stones carried, wood carved, land sculpted and much, much else. When the energy is pure, then it is easily conveyed or felt. This land is unfolding as the volcano has taught us. All who become part of this history will see how powerful is the asking. My experience here is that there is an instant reflection in the asking. Have fun and come and see...After all this is some of the newest land on this planet.
