An award-winning open plan house where the Coral and Tasman Seas meet
About Richard O'Ferrall
Retired pilot, surfer, game fisherman, golfer.
Richard O'Ferrall purchased this House in 2013
Why Richard O'Ferrall chose Sapphire Beach
The house was originally constructed and furnished as a display home to showcase open plan living, the blending of passive and active solar in modern design, and the use of local hardwoods from nearby forests. The property won numerous HIA awards for sustainable building practice, solar efficiency, and spacious contemporary design
What makes this House unique
The house is based on an open design with all the main living and entertaining spaces forming one large indoor/outdoor space that occupies half the floorplan, cooled in summer by breezeways and bifold hardwood doors opening to the sea breeze that provides all the air conditioning needed. Bedrooms and bathrooms take up the other half of the house, and are all heated in winter by solar heated water running under the floors. The unique wide hardwood entry door says welcome and opens to an internal view right through the house to the wetland forest on the far side of the building. Glass main gates have slump glass wave designs made locally specifically for the property. Going to sleep every evening and waking each morning in the master bedroom, the only sounds you hear are the surf on the beach, and the birds in the forest.

FABULOUS BEACH HOUSE - FABULOUS HOLIDAY
We have holidayed in this house for the past three summers. The house is perfect - modern, large, clean and very well appointed and equipped. It has a lovely pool and is private, overlooking a nature reserve. It is within an easy 5 minute walking distance to a cafe, park with kids playground and Sapphire beach. The owner is very accommodating and always goes the extra mile to make us comfortable and ensure that we have a great stay. We love this house and cannot recommend it highly enough.

Perfect location, only a few minutes walk to the Beachstone Cafe. Great hospitality and communication with Richard. Looking forward to getting back to explore more of Coffs.
Delightful guests... and Jasmin was a pleasure to deal with. Welcome back any time.
"South Solitary" is situated behind the dunes and wetlands at a beautiful ocean beach on the edge of the Solitary Islands Marine Park at the boundary between the Coral and Tasman Seas at 30 degrees South Latitude on the east coast of Australia. From the beach you can see the famous island and iconic lighthouse after which the property is named.
The house itself has won numerous awards for sustainable building and design, as well as top custom home design for NSW, and renewable energy awards.
The Coffs region was rated as the "most liveable climate in Australia" by the CSIRO, with a temperate to sub-tropical maritime coastal environment modulated year round by the warm East Australian Current.
The ocean is only a short walk away through beachside vegetation and dunes, and the sound of the sea can be heard through the house all day, as can the birdcalls from the coastal wetlands forest across the road.
The Coffs Harbour coast is unique in that this is the only place in Australia where the continental Great Dividing Range actually branches eastwards and sits immediately behind the town.
The mountain hinterland forms a beautiful backdrop to the coast and less than 1 hour of driving will transport you to mountain villages, streams, waterfalls, wetland forests, and trout fishing.
The harbour itself is the only all-weather harbour on the northern NSW coast, and provides access to the Solitary Islands Marine Park, excellent ocean fishing including some of the best big game fishing in Australia, and open water scuba diving within the Marine Park.
Almost every beach on the Coffs Coast has great surfing, and the numerous small villages scattered along the coastal strip all provide access to board and body surfers.
Numerous other sporting activities are available in the area, and Coffs Harbour boasts the highest rated public access golf course in Australia - Bonville International Golf Resort - just 25 minute's drive from the property.
North Sapphire Beach where the property is located is a three kilometre golden sand beach where a dozen people constitutes a crowd, even at the busiest times.
Please note that the property is a conventional house and has no specific handicapped facilities or special handicapped access.
