We traveled with our adult sons and daughter and this house was just right for our needs. It’s in a good neighborhood and we all felt comfortable there. We briefly met the host and she was friendly and accommodating.

This home was perfect for our family's Spring Break getaway.. It is conveniently located with easy access to both the Santa Fe Plaza and Canyon Road. Kitchen was very sell supplied - we didn't want for a thing. Definitely recommend this house and its owner.
We enjoyed our stay at The Hacienda de Encina! It was a great location, quiet, private and not too far from the Center of Santa Fe and parking on the premises. Checking in was easy. The house gave us lots of room for 7 people and it was clean. The kitchen had everything you need: stove, oven, microwave, dishwasher, basic supplies in the cub boards, many utensils and more, plus a BBQ outside. There was big table in the dining room which accomodated 7 people easily. Living room had comfortable seating for everybody and we sat outside with our coffee in the morning sunrise. Bedrooms were nice, linens were clean and new, beds comfortable and plenty of towels available. Karen was quick to respond to our questions. A lovely home away from home. Thank you, Karen, Maryke and Dick

Thank you for staying! I was happy to have such friendly and communicative guests!
Very convenient location, easy access to Trader Joe's for groceries, and Maria's Mexican Food (yum!). One of the most well-equipped kitchens I have ever found in a VRBO rental. We enjoyed the front porch chairs in the evening (watching the monsoon rains, beautiful clouds) and the patio table in the back in the mornings. The house offers everything you need to be comfortable, and good wifi also. Owner communicated well.

Thank you Kathy!! Delighted you enjoyed your stay. Please come again.
Nice property in a quiet part of Santa Fe. Good access to main roads. Window unit air conditioners in most of rooms was a nice adder given that many older houses in northern NM don't have them. Not always necessary but nice to dry the air when it is warm and after it rains.

Thank you Kris. I’m glad you were comfortable and enjoyed your stay.
Comfortable & convenient, bright & inviting, Hacienda de Encina makes visiting Santa Fe even more wonderful than it already is! My friends and I have enjoyed staying here for the second year in a row while attending the International Folk Art Festival in July. The house is just Perfect for us: it's in a very quiet residential neighborhood only five minutes by car from downtown. Stocked with every convenience imaginable, it offers a large 'homey' kitchen, sufficient bedrooms and living space for four gals to spread out & yet have privacy if desired. And it's SO comfortable. The chairs & big leather couch in the living room beg for extended lounging.
We particularly enjoy early mornings on the lovely private patio. Serenaded by bird song & enveloped by the marvelous fragrance of fresh piñon, our casual al-fresco breakfasts were a truly magical way to begin each day.
Hacienda de Encina has become an integral component in the overall enjoyment of our Santa Fe vacation. We very much look forward to returning again next year & hopefully each year thereafter.
Thank you Karen for making your lovely home—our home.

This lovely hacienda truly was the peaceful getaway we were looking for. The home is exactly as advertised and was perfect for our family of 5. The furniture is comfy, the kitchen has everything we needed, and the option to sit and enjoy the perfect Santa Fe summer weather on either the front porch or in the private courtyard off of the kitchen was magical. We had views of double rainbows 2 evenings in a row. The neighborhood is charming, we enjoyed nightly strolls. Everything in Santa Fe is easy to get to, especially compared to being used to driving all over the Houston area, but this home is only a few minutes from the Plaza so it's super convenient to pop over when you want to but then be able to get home to a quiet neighborhood. Parking around the plaza can be a challenge but the trick is to park in the metered spots in front of the Bataan Memorial Building and then just walk the couple of blocks to the shops. The history of the hacienda and what Karen and her family have done to maintain it's charm is fascinating. We had the opportunity to meet Karen when she came to roll the trash cans out to the street and she was such a warm and kind human being. She lives at the back of the property but we never really knew that because she gives space and privacy, we only got lucky enough to meet her because of the timing of trash day. We had a lovely conversation and we were happy we got the chance to put a face to the name, she was super easy to interact with. Highly recommend!
This house was perfect for our family trip from Indiana ! We had 5 adults traveling together and this place had lots of room. We also hosted a dinner for family who live in Santa Fe and all easily fit around the dining table. We had everything we needed and having the extra things in the kitchen like spices and condiments was very helpful. The location was good for us but it wasn’t within walking distance of the Plaza or anything really. We didn’t need that so it was not a big deal for us. There was grocery, shopping, and the Plaza within a short drive. And the interstate was close too. We’d definitely rent again if we come back with a larger group!
The house was nice. The kitchen was well stocked. Outdoor areas were inviting and comfortable. One bedroom did not have ac and it was hot for sleeping.
Our friend group of seven loved the house and the roominess. It was the perfect size for a larger group. We all had plenty of room and we’re very satisfied with all the amenities. The location was perfect for getting to slopes. Karen was also amazing. She answered all questions and was super helpful. We would stay here again.

Loretta,
I take the business of renting my home on VRBO very seriously. I make improvements based on my reviews. I was very surprised that you gave your stay and my home a rating of 4/5. Your friends stated several times that they loved staying in the house and everyone had a great time. One of your friends asked for an extra bed which I provided. I often heard your group laughing and having fun. Two ladies were allowed to stay in the home past check-out to wait for their rides.
Why did you give my home a rating of 4? As I didn't hear about any problems and got compliments from your friends, I wonder if it was it that your friends had a better time than you did, or is there something I can improve on.
Thank you for your response.
Karen
Our family group of five enjoyed the roominess and amenities of the house. The location was great. We appreciated the good communication and the flexibility the host, Karen, offered with a situation we requested. All was good.
We are four friends who met 40 years ago when our kids were babies. This was a perfect spot for our periodic reunion: morning coffee on the patio, great location for sightseeing, comfortable beds for siestas and at night. We were totally happy with the hacienda.

Okay if you're not picky or expect much. Bad mattress, mouse bait in beds, plumbing issues, etc.
We booked for a month. It is in an ideal neighborhood and has great parking. The inside of the house has issues. Within 5 days of arriving, the plumbing backed up and dumped black sludge in the tubs, so we all had to pack bags and go check into 3 hotel rooms up the street for 2 nights (which the owner reimbursed us for). We learned that the plumbing is a recurring problem there. We found little round green pellets in 3 of the beds, which we thought were laundry beads or something because they were under the pillows and in the sheets. It turns out they were mouse poison. The mattress in the master bedroom was not a mattress, but instead was a piece of yellow industrial packing foam with a dirty foam topper and a thin cotton mattress cover. We didn't find this out until near the end of our stay when I decided to wash the sheets. We have photos of the "mattress," mouse poison and other surprises, but there’s nowhere to upload them here. The washer doesn't work well. The stove is ancient and doesn't have a working light or fan. There were burnt-out bulbs and dirty doormats. Someone else's perishables were in the fridge when we arrived, which is fine for dry goods, but not milks and cheeses during a pandemic.
We have communicated with the owner since leaving, and she feels that we did not communicate the issues to her in a timely fashion so that she might address them. For the first couple of weeks after we arrived we just couldn't be bothered to deal with little annoyances; we were there to work (even the plumbing fiasco we took in stride). The VRBO listing advertised the kiva fireplace, but the handbook inside the house said do NOT use it. Later, the owner said we could have used it and should have asked her, and that she needed to update the handbook. Why would we ask to use it when the house rule book said not to? We just didn't want to take the time or effort to complain, and so we went about our business.
However, when near the end we discovered the "mattress" was actually 2 dirty pieces of foam and that the laundry beads were actually rodent poison, then we finally cared enough to care. So rather than furiously call the owner and demand things like mattresses and explanations, we checked out early and left that place behind us.

As my business is a small business, I rely heavily on honest communication with my guests. I take great pride in my home. I am happy to accommodate your needs, if I had known.
The bed was a foam bed, as many are these days. I have since bought a new foam mattress. Thank you for that feedback.
I have checked with the house cleaner and she has never seen green pellets in the beds or all over the house. We will keep a look out.
I appreciate your patience over the plumbing. Older homes often need maintenance. There is a system now in place to prevent it happening again.
The washing machine works fine. I’ve never had a complaint. We noticed that you must not have used the washer due to the extra large load of dirty laundry.
Each time you write about your complaints, there are new complaints added and old ones dropped.
It was very unfortunate that you couldn’t take the time to communicate with me about your complaints so I could help resolve them. Instead you took the time to take pictures and write a letter listing all your grievances at the end.
I don’t feel I could have met your needs regardless of what I would have done. Some people complain about everything (but won’t tell you about it) because they don’t really want you to do anything, it’s about the complaining.
Thank goodness I have have had very few of the above type of guest.
Melissa, you kept calling my home a hotel. This is not a hotel, it is my private home. I feel a standard hotel would fit your needs better than a not perfect (hotel) home.
I wish you the best in the future.
I do not recommend you as an honest and good guest.
Karen, we loved staying at your beautiful house! Everything was just perfect, there are no complaints at all! Cozy, comfortable, very functional, we found everything we needed!
We loved Santa Fe, for sure we are coming back and we will recommend your place to our friends. This was perfect for our family vacation.
Thank you for everything!

Good time, however...
Overall it was a cute house in a nice area and we enjoyed our stay, but there were some minor issues that came up during our vacation. The common areas were very nice, comfortable, and clean, but the master bed was very uncomfortable and I had issues sleeping on it. It was so hard I felt like I was sleeping on the floor of a cave in Bandelier National Monument (beautiful, by the way). Although the house was nice, we feel it should have been disclosed on the listing that it was a duplex shared with the owner. We didn't hear any noise from her side and only saw her once, so it didn't end up an issue. The fridge was broken during our stay, which was not the owner's fault, but her solution was to put a mini fridge on the patio which was almost full with her food. This meant we could not really utilize the kitchen and we feel the owner should have offered us a discount for the inconvenience. It's a very beautiful home and you can tell the owner has a lot of pride in the ownership.

I’m so sorry to hear that you were displeased with your stay in my home.
This is first time I’ve had someone complain that the master bed was too hard. I will keep this in mind.
Yes, the refrigerator stopped cooling adequately. Instead of canceling trips, I put a small refrigerator on the back porch temporarily. The food in the refrigerator was left by previous guests for you to use. I didn't have any of my personal food in the front refrigerator. I’m sorry this was confusing to you.
Again, this is first time that I have heard an issue regarding my rental set up. The entrances are on separate sides of the house. I can often hear my guests but no one has reported that they heard me
My office is also on the property but that entrance is on the north side of the house and completely separate.
In retrospect, I should have canceled your trip due to the refrigerator problem. I just hated to do that to you all. My solution to the problem was not perfect, but no one had to cancel their or trip or scramble to find another place.
We live and learn.
Beautiful inside and outside spa aces. We loved it! Thank you Karen!

About the host
Hosted by Karen Lacey
Granddaughter of original family owers, Waldo and Harriett Spiess. I have lived in this home since the death of my grandmother in 1988. I have raised my 2 children in this home. I am a speech, language pathologist that specializes in working with children. I love children, time with friends and traveling.
Why they chose this property
This home has been in the Spiess family since the early 1960s, when my grandparents had this home built. I have been coming to this beloved home ever since. At that time the streets going downtown were dirt and the interstate I25 was not complete coming from the north. It has been amazing to watch Santa Fe change. I have always loved Santa Fe and continue to find Santa Fe most enchanting! I am sure you will agree.
What makes this property unique
Centrally located to the Santa Fe plaza, museums, and Canyon Road. Close to Trader Joe's, Whole Foods, and other grocery stores. Numerous delicious restaurants within minutes from the house.
Lovely patio for morning coffee or evening BBQ. Large East facing portal has comfortable chairs for viewing rainbows, rainstorms, and rabbits. Washer and dryer in master bathroom.
