About this property

River Bungalow on the Colorado River 2 Miles From Historic Bastrop, Texas

The adorable 'River Bungalow' lot is high on the bank with the best views from 3 giant decks overlooking the Colorado River. 2 miles from Downtown Bastrop Shops, Restaurants, Fisherman's Park, SUP/Kayaking/tubing, Riverwalk, & <35 minutes to Airport/Austin. River Bungalow's interior is finished w/ salvaged farmhouse finds, industrial shiny fixtures, a chef kitchen & roomy bath w/ claw foot tub & washer/dryer! 2 big screened-in porches for your bug-free enjoyment or yoga (best on the decks overlooking the River)! River Bungalow is for couples, solo adventurers & business travelers wanting Class A ambiance! Small kids not recommended!

To offset any 5 am neighboring train rumbling issues, we have added an air purifier to the master bedroom for some 'white noise'.

We've also put in a perenial flower and herb garden, so there may be something fresh and tasty we can offer you while you are staying at River Bungalow. Anyone say basil pesto? We will let you know what is available and see if you have any interest ahead of your stay. I will be tending the garden (mostly will be watering) every 3 days or so.

The hope is that this is a River Bungalow of rest, fun, adventure, rejuvenation, and/or romance for you! It was over a year for my contractor to remodel with a lot of passion and talent in the details. I salvaged two old 1800's farm houses and mixed it with modern/industrial design. There is big style in the small footprint! It is super comfy with spray foam insulation everywhere you can't see, and central heat/air. After the gutters went up, it was 'time to put it up for a short term rental', so everyone could enjoy it. So, 'ENJOY'!

The house and lot are yours to use and roam during your stay. The lot backs up to a steep slope to the river. There are 3 amazing tiered decks (climbing steep stairs necessary) to head towards the River. The decks were my second art project besides the house itself. Access to the river is currently restricted from the bottom deck, until passage is a lot safer. We can talk about that. Bring the kayaks, however, as there is Fisherman's Park boat ramp less than 2 miles away.
The garage is the owner's personal storage space. There is outside parking available for up to 2 cars. With up to 4 people staying, over 3 people is charged an additional fee.
I also just want to be clear that some may find the bathroom arrangement a little less private than desired. Though off of the Master Bedroom, the bathroom doesn't have a separate door into the main house or into the 2nd bedroom. I just wanted you to be clear on that in case you change your mind. Otherwise, it is so totally worth staying there!!!

The outside is still 'under construction' but should be further along when you stay. The deer are challenging my perennial garden situation, but they win if I have to choose. There are families with little Bambi too.
There is also a train that ambles by every so often. I like it, but it may rumble a bit too loud for some. There is a crossing about 1/3 of a mile away, so you will possibly hear a horn. I just want to let you know, in case that isn't for you. Otherwise, it is fun to watch it go by, when you aren't watching the river roll.

I'll be sending some driving directions etc to you, if you want to move forward. Please let me know if you have any special needs or requirements. I'll be happy to try to help you out. There is so much to do in the Bastrop area, and I'm sure you'll have a blast, and be comfortable at River Bungalow. It is a cool place. :-)

I live 3 doors down from River Bungalow. If you need anything, all you need to do is text or call me. Even if it is a 'remote control' issue, I'll try to help! lol!
We are river people! Rather eclectic neighborhood, but we share the love of the river. :-)

Discover Bastrop: Historic Downtown, Just 2 Miles Away

Just a few minutes from the bungalow, historic downtown Bastrop is waiting for you, with tree-lined streets, old brick storefronts and the Colorado River running right alongside.

Come hungry. Bastrop's food scene has grown up, and the best of it is right downtown:

- Numero 28 for gourmet Italian dining, with desserts and gelato to finish
- Pluto's for wine pairings and chef-curated small bites
- Piney Creek Chophouse for a great dinner out, with wine and spirits alongside steak, salmon and even lamb chops
- Storehouse Market & Eatery for farm-to-table dining, with fun indoor and outdoor seating
- Gracie's, where you have to try the chicken fried chicken or chicken fried steak
- Anita's for the best Tex-Mex downtown, from breakfast to dinner
- Neighbors on the River for great pizza, fresh salads and a full bar, all with a view of the water
- Paw Paw's Catfish for classic Texas comfort food
- The food truck court when you can't decide, so everyone gets what they want

Wander and browse. Spend an afternoon walking Main Street. Duck into art galleries showing local work, then shop boutiques for everything from clothing to gifts and collectibles. It's easy to come back with something you didn't know you needed.

Then come home to the river. After a day in town, you're back at the bungalow in minutes. Slow down, put your feet up, and enjoy the river roll.

Great weekend getaway

We stayed at this cute Bungalow for our 2 year anniversary get away. Loved the deck overlooking the river! My husband adored the kitchen. They did a great job of decorating and making sure we had everything we needed. Make sure to make a reservation at Piney Creek Chip House when you stay, their food and service was great! The Bungalow was exactly what we needed.

Great getaway during COVID

After several months home alone during COVID, I was in desperate need of a getaway. I was looking for somewhere a short drive from Houston with activities in the area. I choose Susan's River Bungalow in Bastrop, and I'm really glad I did! The property was clean and well maintained. I felt very safe. I enjoyed the screened in porches, and the decks. The sunsets are great! The chickens provided amusement as well. I enjoyed hiking at both Bastrop and Buescher State Parks. I would definitely consider staying here again if I'm in the area. It would also be great for a couple, a small family, or a girlfriend's getaway.

The most relaxing weekend at the river!

My husband and I had a wonderful 3 days at Susan & Buddy’s VRBO. We enjoyed the wildlife in the early mornings and were able to see a Texas river otter, ducks, and some pretty big fish! It was so fun to have the chickens hanging around too. We read books, drank wine by the river, fished, and unplugged for the weekend. Not having our phones was one of the best parts! We also went into downtown Bastrop and ate on the patio at Neighbor’s Kitchen & Yard (amazing food and views). The house was super clean and Susan & Buddy were so nice and easy to communicate with. My husband and I would definitely recommend staying here to all of our family and friends!

What a social distancing godsend!

Our Galveston beach anniversary vacation got cancelled by the hurricane, we were close to just throwing in the towel when I decided to check one more time for something close by. 45 minute drive from home rather than several hours? Private river access (albeit rather sketchy) rather than public beach access? And chickens! Cute, fluffy chickens! The rental was adorable, it was so cold and perfect inside, all the furniture was super comfortable. We laid in the hammock and watched the river go by after trekking down throughout our weekend to float in it to enjoy the scenery. Everything about the trip was perfect, it was just the relaxing getaway we needed after being cooped up at home since March. I would definitely love for the poison ivy down by the water to not be an issue in the future, and for there to be some kind of guide rope or stairs directly down to the water since it was pretty treacherous to get down there, but I was thoroughly warned of both these things before arrival so no big deal. Thanks, guys!

Loved Bastrop!

We really enjoyed our stay in Bastrop and this house was just right! The house was clean and the beds are comfortable. The decor is cute and we enjoyed the chickens. There is a really nice river view. The house is represented on VRBO to sleep 4 but they charge you extra for a 4th person which I thought was a little misleading. Overall, the place is great and we very much enjoyed the town of Bastrop!

Amazing (socially isolated) getaway

We LOVED this property--really one of our favorite vacation rentals we've done, and we travel a lot. Super clean and cute decor, and the kitchen was great. We loved soaking in the clawfoot bathtub, and the screened-in porches were dreamy during a summer thunderstorm. The river views from the tiered deck are lovely, and we roasted marshmallows for s'mores on the firepit on the deck. The couches were super comfy--you just sink in. And the DVD library was a fun touch. We did a few strolls down memory lane and watched some great 1990s flicks in the evenings. The host was so friendly and very responsive to communication. She was also flexible when we had to ask to move our dates fairly late, which we really appreciated. 10/10 would recommend.

Marvelous rental

We enjoyed our stay so much. The owners couldn't have been nicer or more accommodating. We had one tiny issue (the wifi went out through no fault of anyone) and they had it fixed immediately. Speaking of wifi it is super fast here! The interior design is beautiful and the beds were very comfortable. So comfortable we are thinking of buying the same one for our home. The property is gorgeous and we even managed to make our way down to the river for some fishing! This will be our go-to spot on future trips to the Austin area.

Relaxation

It was a pure pleasure to stay here. Talk about stress relief. Between sitting on the rock catching dinner , or on one of the decks watching the sun set, or sitting around the fire pit with the kids making s’mores at nite . You totally forget the stress. We will most definitely be back . And highly recommend anyone considering to come , you will love it .

Nice place on the river

We really enjoyed our stay. Once the multi-level deck down to the river is completed, it will be an even better place to stay. The house was clean, recently updated with a great kitchen, nice bedrooms. The screened in porches are really a great addition, especially during the spring when the weather is cooler and you can spend the evenings out on the porches playing games or just relaxing.

Our Happy Place

Christmas in Texas would not have been the same without the River Bungalow. From the moment we walked in we were in love with this beautiful cabin. It is very clean, very quiet and very peaceful. Susan has done an amazing job with the choices and restoration. It is close to everything yet tucked away so that you feel like you are in a hide away for your stay. Very comfortable bed, super soft sheets and cozy blankets. Enjoyed an evening soak in the claw foot tub after a day of outdoor fun. Lovely way to start the day with morning coffee on the outside screened in porch by the river that you could hear running after the night’s rain. Pictures do not do this cabin justice it is very roomy and comfortable for two people. There is absolutely no comparison to staying in a hotel. We would definitely stay here again and highly recommend it to others. We loved watching the deer feed and rest just feet from the porch. Thank you Susan and Buddy we will be coming back! I love Bastrop and the Colorado River! Everyday, I am blessed that I get to look out at it and see it change, more frequently than you'd think. It is always moving and ever in transition. Being out on it is the only thing better!
I am a wine snob, I think. LOL I like a lot of wines and am easily amused by them. I will generally trend towards dry, earthy, non-fruit forward reds. You'll be able to tell that I like wine, staying as a guest at River Bungalow.
I'm a Real Estate Broker, so my world is very much about dirt. I love it and helping my people accomplish their current realty goals.
I'm mostly an action/adventure movie kind of girl, but I do like a good story and a romance :-). Schulman 8 Lost Pines is a great theatre to see a picture show.
There are lots of music venue opportunities in the Bastrop area. I tend to like some blues and guitar pickin'.
Food! I love most food types. If you have a hankering, let me know, as I have probably eaten everywhere in Bastrop. Yes, Domino's Pizza delivers to River Bungalow!

Why they chose this property

The hope is that this is a River Bungalow of rest, fun, adventure, rejuvenation, and/or romance for you! It was over a year for my contractor to remodel with a lot of passion and talent in the details.
We are river people! Rather eclectic neighborhood, but we share the love of the river.
Back towards town, enjoy the houses and streets of old Bastrop. The holidays are exceptionally festive times to visit. Be sure to go to the Museum on Main Street and Fine Arts Guild on Chestnut Street (Loop 150).
Bastrop has a wonderful choice of restaurants downtown. Enjoy the nightlife, live music on the weekends. Get breakfast at Texas' Monthly's highlighted Maxine's on Main Street. Great for breakfast and homestyle cooking!
Shop until your heart's content!
Forgot the wine? Oh no! Pluto's on Main Street can fix you up with a great bottle, or so!
HEB grocery store is very close if you want (of course you will) the refrigerator and pantry space.
If you need ANYTHING in grocery on the go - go to Tracey's on the corner of Main and Cedar Street. You probably took Cedar St to get to the River Bungalow.River Bungalow is so very close to downtown. At 2 miles to town, you can walk, drive, bike, or roller skate! Fisherman's Park is right down river and worth the visit when you first get here. It is possible to tube from River Bungalow (let's talk about that). Enjoy the riverwalk. There are several exit points back up the hill to the heart of Historic Downtown Bastrop from the riverwalk. Bring a bicycle or rent one from town. (I may have a couple ase well) Or, bring a SUP, canoe or kayak, or rent one from my buddies at Bastrop River Co. They also do a tubing trip for real relaxation!

What makes this property unique

I salvaged old 1800's farm houses and mixed it with modern/industrial design. There is big style in the small footprint! It is super comfy with spray foam insulation everywhere you can't see, and central heat/air. After the gutters went up, it was 'time to put it up for a short term rental', so everyone could enjoy it. So, 'ENJOY'!

The river is moderately accessible. If you aren't part goat, I wouldn't try to traverse beyond the bottom deck to the river, for safety reasons, but it does have an incredible view. From 3 tier decks (steep stairways) with some chairs, you can watch the colors change on the water as the sun rises in the winter or sets in the summer. Watch the huge soft shell turtles that have made the river boulders their home on the river at the hill bottom. Lots of birds (besides the chickens), nature, and fun things to see.
