About this property

Humble Kiwi Bach in Beautiful Duncan Bay

Our humble Kiwi bach is a quirky wee place located in the beautiful Duncan Bay, Tennyson Inlet.

Situated in a quiet cul-de-sac on the hill, it is a five-minute walk to the beach, with great swimming at the Duncan Bay picnic reserve. Despite being small, our classic kiwi bach has three double bedrooms and a kids bunk room. There is a loft above the living area that provides an extra space to relax or for kids to play.

The newly extended, spacious deck is an awesome place to have dinner or drinks, surrounded by native bush and birdsong. We have two kayaks that guests are welcome to use and there's a filleting bench for all the fish you're going to catch during your stay. We have a TV and DVD player, with a large selection of DVDs, and heaps of games and puzzles. There is also a bush library (book exchange) nearby.

Children are welcome. There are toys, books and a baby gate at the top of the stairs for safety. Good, house-trained dogs are welcome to join you on your stay. There is a kennel down stairs to keep your pup secure. Water bowls and leads are available for our canine guests, as well as doggy doo bags so you can clean up after them. Dogs are not permitted on the furniture or beds.

Duncan Bay has a fantastic launching ramp for your boat, or have a go at catching a snapper off the wharf or from Pipi Beach.

We have a mooring - please let us know if you wish to use this.

We also offer complimentary tea and coffee, as well as some general pantry breakfast supplies. Please note, water must be boiled before drinking, or bring some in with you. Linen and towels are not supplied, so please bring your own. All beds have mattress protectors, duvets, blankets and pillows.

There is now 4G cell reception in Duncan Bay!

When you book, please leave us a note with details such as where you are travelling from, the purpose of your trip and if you are bringing a dog.

Great fishing

Good location and comfy beds. Once the heaters were on it didn't take too long to air out and warm up, but this property needs a good clean.

Needs some love but was ok for the weekend

House desperately needed some airflow for a few days. Was damp and smelt damp, curtains were mouldy. Heater did not work in the bedroom. Kitchen was very well equiped and bed was comfy. Nice outside deck. Just needs some tlc.

Winter break

We had a great time. Road into Duncan bay was being worked on and with the weather in the area it was only open at certain times but wasn't really a hassle. Great area to walk around and we did some kayaking. The bach is a great kiwi bach, comfortable and has everything you need.

Bach

It was probably a bit too batchy for us. Duncan Bay itself is beautiful, exploring outside was best part for sure. unfortunately we arrived during a big storm and spent first couple of days inside which was quite musky, it was very noisy from the storm and could een hear neighbours walking around in their house in the bach. I wouldnt want to sleep in the downstair bedrooms as theyre very musky and damp.Lots of fun games and fully expuipped kitchen. Note that Duncan Bay is very remote (an hour to a dairy or corner store - 1.5hrs to supermarket) and you need to boil water to drink it. Overall Duncan Bay is a beautfiul part of NZ but next time Id stay somewhere more comfortable (maybe Im a snob who knows!).

A classic bach

We had a lovely week in Duncan Bay. It was wonderful to be able to bring our dog, who also had a great trip. Baxter the dog and I enjoyed walks around the area, Baxter loved swimming at the old stone jetty and Pipi beach. I found the water a bit cold. My husband and a friend went fishing and were very pleased with themselves. I'm quite sure we'll be back another day.

About the host

Hosted by Sally and Ben McLennan

Host profile image
A few years ago we fell in love with Duncan Bay and were lucky enough to snap up this quirky place! We are happy to offer others the opportunity to spend time in the Bay, at an affordable price. We hope you love the bay as much as we do.
Sally and Ben.

Why they chose this property

Duncan Bay has one of the best boat launching ramps in the area and is only 1.5 hours from Nelson and Blenheim. It also offers great walks through native bush, and an abundance of beautiful bird life. It's a very special place.

What makes this property unique

Our property is what you would expect for a typical 1960s(ish) kiwi bach. A charming mish-mash of carpet colours and a layout that would rival a rabbit's warren. But it has everything you need for a fabulous stay. We have recently extended the deck, which looks out directly over native bush.
