Perfect area to bring your ATV. Cool trails to explore from cabin. Saw bear, elk, deer and much more. The river noise at night from upstairs bedroom was so calming. Beautiful area to explore. Very cozy comfortable cabin. We will be back—wasn’t ready to leave.

Renter beware, property not as listed: Property is not "minutes from town." It's a 2-hour round trip, to find a grocery store, gas station and/or restaurants, on very bad roads. Cabin, though in a beautiful location and has a certain rustic charm, is quite dated & in need of a deep clean. Very steep, rickety stairs. As a senior, it was not a safe situation for me. Lot's of cords everywhere and we had issues with charge cords overheating. Description says 3 bedrooms-nope! Not even 1 with 4 walls, just an open loft upstairs with 2 beds separated by a curtain so-- no privacy if you plan to stay with another couple. The one bathroom was downstairs. Think about that before renting this one-- not easy getting down those stairs at night in the dark. Kitchen was poorly equipped-- we had to go to town to get a toaster, a large skillet, sink drainer, a can opener and other basics that should've been there. Good wifi, but no TV?! We watched Netflix on my laptop at night. No hiking trails-- it's all private property. River is more like a shallow creek so no fishing either. Check in could've been better. No address provided until 4 pm, then an hour drive after that-- so, a lost day. We left early on the 3rd day, moved to another property, & were promised a refund. Hope that happens. Some people might like this place, but it seemed vastly overpriced for what it was. Property manager Kevin was awesome and helped us relocate to a GREAT place for the same price.
I will cherish the weeks we stayed at River Chalet. It was my first experience with VRBO and I couldn’t have picked a more enchanting cabin. I’m so thankful Pylar has a heart for animals and that the cabin is pet friendly. My pups and I LOVED every day we spent on the basin. It was quiet and we didn’t have any neighbors to worry about. The 14 miles down a dirt road wasn’t a problem for me as I enjoyed sightseeing and unplugging from city life.
The kitchen was a joy to cook in. Appliances and kitchen tools were great! The only item missing is a bread toaster.
For our next visit I would love to have access to a bear proof trash bin located on site. This would make disposing of trash a lot easier than having to transport elsewhere. I think there typically is a trash receptacle present at the property but there was a misunderstanding and I didn’t have one for the stay.
Again, the cabin is wonderful…
I hope we get to visit again.
Thank you!
Loved the private river front setting. This property offers peace and quiet while being surrounded by nature. Kitchen was well stocked for cooking. The owners were great to work with. This is a perfect pet-friendly getaway. We will definitely be back!
overall, it was nice, although there was very little firewood right outside the cabin. we had to do a lot of work to bring more over and we had to do a lot of work splitting (with my hammer) wood for kindling to start fires. didn't find an ax or wedge to help. also, the dining area and the loft bedroom(with balcony) above the dining area had no electrical power . we had to improvise.

We stayed here middle of September for 6 nights to do some social distancing hiking / biking in the area. It is located in a beautiful area and definitely away from others in peaceful solitude. The trade off is that It is 40 minute drive on mountain (gravel) road instead of the advertised “minutes from Pagosa springs”- which got old after a few days. Most hiking trails we wanted to do were spread out all directions so a more central location may have been better for us. We drove an hour or more to most trails (piedra river, chimney rock, Fourmile falls, treasure falls). On the flip side- We explored 2 great trails near the cabin (10-15 min drive) but did not walk from cabin- opal lake and leche falls are on the same road. When we checked in the cabin was not the cleanest and definitely not additional Covid clean. We travel with cleaning supplies so went to work for an hour to get it to a comfortable level. The property manager stopped by a few days later to go over property boundaries (apparently neighbors are very touchy abt anyone crossing the lines) which added a bit of anxiety abt being outside and enjoying the river/ yard. King bed upstairs was very comfortable and bedding was good quality. There is a washer and dryer to use which was much appreciated. Upper deck was a great place for happy hour among the San Juan mountains! Mountain View’s are great- would recommend for a couple or small family wanting to enjoy nature or solitude.
This property is amazing. It's like out of a book, mountains, rivers, and wildlife everywhere. We saw deer, turkey and cows almost every day.
Few things to keep in mind. This property is 13miles on a dirt road so make sure you drive a truck or Jeep. We did it in a Nissan Maxima so a car is doable. The fireplace is the only source of heat and worked perfect for us. Check out all the trails and hiking there is so much to do.
