Beach Access, private pool, Bar and Restaurants, supermarkets, garage

The Neighborhood:
Finca La Marcela is a mountainside neighborhood in the hills above Playa Potrero with spectacular views of the oceanscape below. You’ll feel like you can see forever, from the ocean horizon to the panorama of green hillsides.

Most homes are securely gated and have their own swimming pools. It’s a bit of an uphill drive, but the privacy is superb and wildlife in these hills is abundant.

Offering easy access to three beaches (Potrero, Penca and Prieta), this town combines upscale lodging options with the charm of a traditional Costa Rican town (think central plaza with church, school and soccer field).
There are plenty of restaurants, shops and other conveniences, and the downtown area has two mini supers (convenience stores), as well as a commercial plaza with a coffee shop, a hairdresser and other businesses.
Some of the liveliest nightlife in the region can be found at Las Brisas Bar, right on the beach, though it’s normally hopping only on Wednesdays (Ladies’ Night).
Potrero has several nice housing developments with “Villagio” in the name, popular among Italians and other expats. You can find Italian gelato shops, Costa Rican sodas (small, affordable restaurants) and hotels in a range of prices (Pitaya Lodge, Bahía La Esmeralda, Hotel Isolina, Bahía del Sol).
Just to the south of Potrero lie all the attractions of Surfside, and to the north is a beautiful, hilly drive along the ocean, ending at the Mediterranean-style village of Las Catalinas. Potrero is within easy striking distance of several beaches, and it’s a great base to explore the entire region — for a sampler of both the high-end and the humble.

Getting Around:
Our agents will be happy to assist you with renting a car, giving you the freedom to explore the area where you want, when you want. For short drives to nearby towns or beaches, golf carts are another popular mode of transportation. You can also rent a bicycle to ride around in town or beyond.

We can arrange transfers to and from the airport. Rental cars can also be delivered to your property at no additional cost, allowing you to relax and enjoy the scenery as our private van drives you here from the airport.

Taxis are available but can be a bit hard to find. Many locals use buses to get around, though there are a limited number of routes and times of day when you can catch them. Private shuttles can be a great option for traveling to nearby destinations, and many tour companies offer transportation to and from the tour. Our information brochure will provide you with useful information on local transportation options and points of interest, as well as contact information for taxis and shuttles.

Great house, a lot of things need to be update
We had a great stay, the house is gorgeous, (exactly like in the pictures), the communication with the admins was great, we had a little problem at the beginning but they arrived quickly the next day to fix it. Overall this is a very nice place with a very good location. However, if you’re the type of person that would like to stay a few hours late on bed in the mornings, or if you can’t sleep without a good AC, then you might reconsider this place.. None of the windows has blackout courtains, there were some windows on the bedrooms without them completely so the lights at 5am are right in your eyes. Also the ACs is not well positioned so the whole house my be very hot by noon (we used the pool by this time) because of the windows. There was one bathroom with a very bad smell on the tubes and one of the bedrooms doesn’t even have walls 😅 Don’t get me wrong, I would return but taking a sleep mask and a fan 😅

Great location with amazing views!
We absolutely loved staying at this property! It was exactly what we were looking for. We were in very close proximity to several beaches. The restaurants in the local town were great. Amazing views from this spot. The pool was great in the late afternoon when we get back from being gone all day to sit and watch the sunset and have a cocktail. The iguanas on the property made my kids extremely happy and they fed them bananas every day. We loved spending time here and felt very safe as there was a security alarm, and a gate to the property as well as a gated entrance to the road it was located on. Would highly recommend this to anyone looking for a nice relaxing stay in the mountains by the ocean.

Good value with amazing views
We just spent a week at Casa Ironbark, and would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone looking for a rental in the area. That’s not to say we don’t have recommendations for improvements, but wow - bang for the buck, you would struggle to beat it. It’s comfortable and in a great location. First, it IS seven minutes from the beach, Potrero or Penca… unless you are here in high season. One local told us that the 35 minute drive to Tamarindo becomes a 3 hour adventure in February, so management of expectations is key. Second, the house was very clean, and there are cleaning supplies, towels, brooms and a vacuum present to help keep it that way. The pool guy came twice - Tuesday and Friday, and a cleaning lady came by on Friday (we accepted fresh towels but declined the service). The sunsets are amazing. It’s worth it just for those. I am hopeful the new(ish) owners will fine-tune a few details, none of which were deal-breakers except maybe the first: the patio furniture seriously needs to be upgraded. Four plastic chairs does not create a wonderful outdoor experience; add outdoor dining and a couple of padded chaises or a daybed for lounging or enjoying some sun. A couple of nice, comfortable chairs on the east side would be good, too. Some additional comfortable seating in the living area would also make a difference. And the last is probably personal preference - allowing more afternoon sun on the pool would warm it up (at least closer to my liking); it’s refreshing as it is (during the green season), and maybe it would get too hot in the dry season? It’s something to consider, anyway. Looking at the other possibilities in Potrero at this price point, there’s really nothing that compares for the full package - privacy, convenience, location and sunsets. I would definitely stay again, especially with some patio upgrades.

Spectacular sunset view
This place had the best sunset and views! Evey day we watched the sun go down on the patio or the pool and it was just breathtaking. Location was great! It would have been nice to have a table outside to eat at during the evening. The inside was a little tired, could have made a few minor upgrades to make it better. Being from Texas we are used to a certain level of air conditioning, but once we got used to their system we were golden. The kitchen could use some more glass, it was just an assortment of coffee cups and a few odds and ends. The master is an upstairs room open to the downstairs area, but we did not mind. The bathrooms were super small for the size of the place, but were usuable. Our concierge rep Carlos was the best and was really helpful. I wishe there was a little more communication about what to do on the last day. I think the instructions we got via email were not for the property we rented. All in all I would rent this place again because the view was just amazing!
