Nice property, centrally located
Great experience. Washing sheets, towels before departure is a real hassle. Very roomy. Would love to visit again.

David,
I'm glad you enjoyed your time. I currently do not charge a cleaning fee and that is why I ask for the renters to wash the sheets and linens. If the house cleaner does this- it is a lot more time consuming and costly. I am taking this into consideration and thinking about charging a cleaning fee in lieu of the renters washing the sheets- but I'm not quite sure what most people would prefer- no cleaning fee and wash the linens or- charge additional cleaning fee and don't do the linens. I appreciate your review.
Our stay at the mermaid house was just as we had hoped. A relaxing weekend spending time with our family. The house was well taken care of, clean and had everything we needed to enjoy our stay. We spent a lot of time at the nice private beach area. Sonya was quick to respond to any concerns I had before our stay and was wonderful to work with. We’d love to stay again in the future!

Sarah,
Thank you for the lovely review. Would love to have you stay again.
Home is just as described and pictured. Lake Michigan a short walk away..you are truly with nature at this place, wild turkey and deer are abundant. Neighbors were friendly and didn’t bother us at all. New grill for you to use and the kitchen is equipped well. Make sure to bring some firewood for some great family conversations around the fire at night!
The house was very nice. The set up worked perfectly for us, as we had older kids with us and they took over the basement area. The private beach is absolutely beautiful, but you do have to walk down, and back up, about 75 steps to get there. We had people with us that couldn’t do the steps, so we ventured up to Mears State park several days. The location is less than 15 minutes from Pentwater one direction and Silver Lake the other direction. I would definitely stay again, especially if we had a large group again.
We stayed at the Mermaid House the week before Labor Day and loved every moment of it! We had 2 large familys stay and there was more than enough room for everyone. The walk down to the beach was very scenic and the private beach was breath taking. We had great weather and spend most of our time outside. The kitchen was perfect for cooking full meals for a large group and the extra space downstairs was perfect for the kids to have their own area to hang out. With 5 bedrooms and 3 full baths everyone had a soft comfortable bed to sleep in and no one waited to use a bathroom. I would 100% recommend this property. Sonya was great to work with and stayed in contact if need.
Thank you

Hi everything that the house said was correct and the owner Sonya was very sweet and accommodating..the only thing that we had trouble with is HomeAway sent us a check in time at 3 so we arrive there with food in coolers Etc. But was not able to check in till later sonya did her best to try to finish up early and her information said 4pm..we wished that HomeAway would have sent the correct information to us.. other than that it was a great place, great location... had a marvelous time :-)

Dirty. Not maintained
Wanted to pack up and leave immediately. The property is run down and seemed like it hadn’t been cleaned in over a year. There were cobwebs in all peaks and windows. Windows had been left open downstairs and it was just utterly dirty. The notes say to wash the sheets, but you wash them and they wreak of rotten eggs. The well water is so terrible that after everyone showered you couldn’t even stand being in the house. The house has potential it is just not taken care of at all.

This is a very cruel and untrue review of the property. The home is clean. It is clearly listed in the home details that it has a well and depending on the weather the water can smell. The house cleaner assured me the windows in the basement were not open. I can’t help but think this person purposely intended on writing a bad review for some reason. It’s unfortunate and I can only think of how unhappy of a person they must be to write something so harsh because this is most definitely not true and uncalled for.

michigan gem house
We liked that the 9 of us could all have a bed. Plenty of room for all of us. HOwever, this house needs some attention. The deck was unusable , it had so many leaves and sticks on it. The gas grill was absolutely filthy! You could not open the french doors in the basement because of the pile of leaves up against it. There was no one to contact about it's condition. The kitchen is very lacking. There was no dish soap to wash dishes with. The cutting board was broken in half. There were no skillets, except for a large cast iron skillet and a little one. So unorganized, you had to hunt all over to find things , if they had them.
We did enjoy the location of the house. Close to several places to go. Air conditioner worked very well. Some of the beds need new mattresses. Downstairs is perfect for kids to sleep and hang out. Someone needs to inventory the kitchen. Add some big bowls and a set of pot and pans and new mattresses.

Hi Debra, we're glad you enjoyed certain aspects of this home, but sorry your stay fell short in other areas. The homeowner has asked us to share the following:
- I apologize that the deck was not properly cleaned before your visit. The leaves have been cleared, and I reminded my cleaner that the grill needs to be checked and cleaned after every stay.
- There should be dish soap under the sink, but I am sorry if you did not find it.
- There are three different-sized skillets in a cabinet under the kitchen island. There are also plenty of pots, pans, dishes, and big bowls.
- The mattresses are still somewhat new and in good condition. Your note said the beds were nice, so I would love to know which ones you thought should be replaced.
Thank you for your feedback; I will continue to work hard to provide a fantastic stay for all guests!

Okay with lots of issues
There were lots of small issues that I wish I had known about before renting (which if I had it to do over again I would pick a different cabin).
Some of the issues we had:
We only used the 3 upstairs bedrooms. I would not want to stay in the basement, it is uncomfortably damp, buggy, and has evidence of mice in many places (not to mention a dead mouse on a glue trap when we arrived).
The water in the house smells strongly of sulfur. There is good filtered drinking water on tap at the kitchen sink.
There is a combination locking door knob on the basement door that isn't set up, and a note on the door saying not to close it. My boys didn't see the note and closed the door. We couldn't get downstairs. There was a key in the door that didn't work. I texted the owner, but after several hours I got frustrated and jimmied the door.
The DVD player on the living room TV is broke and there is no other way to watch something on it
The lock on the back sliding door is broken so you lock it with a hunk of wood
The vent fan in the primary bathroom is broken
Many of the lights, switches, and outlets are finicky. You have to wiggle, reflip, or adjust them to get them to work.
The gas fireplace is turned off for the season
The owner writes in the house's binder that if you have issues you should contact her and not leave a bad review, and also texted me the same thing. I would do that if there were only a few issues, but this place just seemed like issue after issue.

From the owner:Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback about your stay with us. We would like to address each of the issues you raised:-The basement is equipped with a whole-house dehumidifier and A/C, which typically keeps the space comfortable. We will be checking both systems to ensure they’re functioning properly.-We strive to maintain a pest-free environment. While we haven’t had issues in the past, we will be taking extra measures to address your concerns about mice.-The home uses well water, which can sometimes have a sulfur smell. We have a full-house water softening system, and there is filtered drinking water available at the kitchen sink for guests.-The basement door lock issue has been addressed, and the lock will be fully functional for future guests to avoid any confusion.-We will inspect the DVD player in the living room to resolve the issue, and will also remove it from our amenity list to avoid future misunderstandings.-The sliding door lock is currently secured with a wooden stick, which has been a reliable solution. However, we will explore other options for a more permanent fix.-The gas fireplace is turned off during the warmer months to conserve energy, but it will be available during the cooler seasons.-We’ll have our handyman take a look at the light switch going to the basement and any other switches that may need attention. We appreciate your feedback so we can continue to improve.

Great Time had by all!
We stayed at the Mermaid house and had a wonderful time! There were 9 of us and everyone had their own space and bed! The location is perfect- woodsy with beach in walking distance! The house was well stocked with all that you would need-towels,sheets, etc. There was even hand soap and dish soap to get you started in case you forgot to bring some.
There is no Wifi. And we did not have much cell service either. That’s just something people should take note of. For me, I LOVED it because my kids played board games and played outside and were forced to not have any screen time. Also, we never figured out the TV. Again, I loved it, the rest of the family, not so much.
The basement can be used as a totally separate space for a two family trip. It has its own kitchen space and eating area as well as living space and bedrooms.
The house is decorated very tastefully as well!
The neighbors were delightful and very kind to us!
I truly enjoyed our time and we look forward to coming back in the future!
Thank you so much!!!
Very spacious - the pictures of the inside were right on - the kitchen was well supplied with cookware - very close to the county park on Lake Michigan and it was never crowded!
The keyless entry was nice
Home was perfect for what we needed and close to the dunes. Very well stocked with everything you need. We brought our own firewood for the fire pit, but there was a guy selling bundles just walking distance down the road.
Parking was a bit tight, we could fit 2 trucks and one trailer but we had to borrow my daughters driveway at her rental for our other trailer. We were able to put our jeep in the garage. That was nice, in case it rained.
I think it's a bit confusing figuring out who to contact with issues. Evolve,VRBO or the owner.
Overall, great place for a family vacation though.
Rented Mermaid House for a golf weekend in Pentwater. House was clean and well stocked. Close to town location in private wooded setting. Would return without a doubt!
House was very clean and large enough for our whole group. Our group came up to go to the dunes so the location was nice. Enough parking for two trucks with trailers.
We had a wonderful time at the Mermaid House. The house was perfect for our group. Sonya was responsive and great to book with. The beach was amazing. We’ll definitely be back!
Loved it. Very spacious and the two floors were perfect for two families. We stayed with my brother and his family and never felt cramped. The playground in the back is great (a little old but fine) to let the kids run around on while the grownups chilled out on the deck. The walk to the beach is scenic but a little long for youngsters. Still, the whole experience was wonderful.

Great time
We enjoyed our stay very much. Good location within walking distance to a great beach.
We celebrated our 50th wedding anniversary by going to our favorite spot and the Mermaid House had plenty of room for us and our 3 children and grandchildren. The home was beautifully decorated, the kitchen was well stocked, beds were comfortable and the bathrooms had plenty of towels. The 3rd bathroom and the washer and dryer was a plus. The kids enjoyed the outdoor play area and swing. Lake Michigan was a short walk or drive away and we enjoyed the private beach, did some swimming and saw some beautiful sunsets. It was about a 10 minute drive to Silver Lake where we had fun swimming and climbing the dunes. We enjoyed the firepit at the house with a campfire and smores and the Whippy Dip was close by for ice cream treats. The owner, Sonya, was very accessible and sweet. We were surprised upon our arrival to find a balloon bouquet and 2 bottles of sparkling juice to help celebrate our 50th anniversary. Thank you Sonya, we have many wonderful memories of our stay at the Mermaid House, Lake Michigan and Silver Lake!
Spacious, nicely decorated, Clean and fully equipped with everything we needed. Quiet wooded area, private beach was our favorite spot to be...nothing like the fire on the beach! Perfectly situated to entertain all! So much to see and do! This was our first trip to the west side of Michigan, and the house was a great place! It left a wonderful, memorable impression for all of us! Nana, Stephanie, Nick, Sophia, Addie, Derrick, Cassie, and Allie

Thank you for the nice review. I do hope you’ll be back anytime for a visit.
Overall, we had a great time at this house! It was more than accomodating for all 12 of us. The house is nicely updated especially in the basement as it seems it was recently finished. very nice! We would stay again!
Our group of 10 adults and 4 kids enjoyed our time at The a Mermaid House. There was a July heatwave and the owner kindly bought us extra fans to use. The house has many cute, mermaid themed decorations that my kids loved. Lots of DVDs, Books and toys for the kids. The basement rooms suffered from heat and humidity, but added needed extra space for our large group. The private beach was perfect and we loved being able to walk there. This house would be perfect for a slightly smaller group or in cooler temperatures.
