About this property

Surry Hills Sydney Renovated 19th Century Cottage

Summary:
Behind the red door of this renovated 2 bedroom, 1 bathroom 19th century cottage lies a plethora of history, offering old world charm with the comfort of modern conveniences. Perfectly located, it's a stroll to a huge choice of eateries, bars and shops in Darlinghurst and Surry Hills, including Oxford Street, home of Sydney's world-renowned Mardi Gras parade. Public transport hub Central Station is 10 minutes' walk, and the CBD (Downtown) just 15 minutes away on foot.

The Space:
Downstairs is an open plan living and dining room with original floor boards that have been sanded back and brought to life. There's a 6 person dining setting and a beautiful old chesterfield lounge where you can relax or watch television on the large flat screen TV.

Beyond the lounge/dining area you can step down into the fully equipped kitchen complete with dishwasher oven, stove, microwave, fridge and double sink with ample bench space and storage.

Walk through the kitchen and take another step down into a fully renovated bathroom in contemporary black and white with beautiful subway tiling. The bathroom also contains a large washing machine and separate dryer. There's also an outdoor courtyard at the back of the house for you to enjoy.

Upstairs there are two bedrooms. The main bedroom also has another television complete with chromecast and has a beautiful wooden queen size bed. The second bedroom is open plan and is lined with soft white curtains and contains a queen size bed.

The Neighborhood:
From acclaimed theatre and intriguing galleries to fine food and wine, Surry Hills is a delightful inner Sydney neighbourhood near Central Station. You’ll discover hidden gems, including award-winning restaurants, hip bars and great pubs, fashion boutiques, and the famous Bourke Street Bakery. Another drawcard are the restaurants and cafes as well as bars and pubs. Crown Street and side streets are dotted with delicious places to eat and drink. The annual Surry Hills Festival in September celebrates the neighbourhood’s local music, food, arts and culture.

Getting Around:
Being so close to the Sydney CBD, there are many buses servicing the Surry Hills area, which makes travelling from Surry Hills to the beaches of Coogee or Maroubra simple. Central Station is the closest station to Surry Hills and can be reached easily by foot or bus. Being directly near Central Station provides the ability to reach most other locations around Sydney City and suburbs without the need to change trains in the process.

There needs to be a warning about the stairs
The ground floor (subject to stair issues discussed below) is lovely as is the outdoor space. The location is excellent. The concierge who greets you warrants a 10 out of 10. However, the stairs are very narrow and very steep and made out of concrete. Getting to the bathroom in the middle of the night is precarious. While the railing is very robust, it doesn't remove the risk of using the stairs. There is also a stair from the kitchen down to the bathroom level - it is much too high (exacerbated by the fact that two minor stairs in the kitchen are both too low). We found items under the cushions of the sofa left from previous guests, and, while hunting for something, also found filth behind the sofa. The TV in the livingroom is not functioning (this from someone who has used Apple TV, Chromecast (both external and in a Smart TV). I did not bother to check the second TV upstairs. There was only water in the shampoo bottle in the shower and no conditioner. Our visit was amazing but the accommodation is not for seniors, even seniors who are very active. The property manager has no positive communication - there are "pat" emails that could have been sent by a 10 year old. Nothing friendly or helpful. After meeting such a lovely concierge, it was surprising and disappointing that the "back office" is terse and unfriendly (when I tried to explain this after I left, I was sent a number of rude and accusatory messages by either the manager or the owner).
