About this property
Cottage in Burnt Coat Harbor
This is and OLD Maine house, on a working harbor, just above Kent's Wharf, the oldest lobster pound on the coast. The view includes the eastern and western entrances to Burnt Coat Harbor around Harbor Island, owned for generations by the Forbes family, a fleet of lobster boats, and sailboats that anchor in the evenings. The house has cable tv and wifi, and is filled with books, art and movies (several hundred dvd's and hundreds of vhs sets. The kitchen and pantry have espresso machine, Keurig, drip coffee maker and French press. There are two bicycles at the house and two kayaks. Besides the two upstairs bedrooms (a small deck off the harborside bedroom), there is a large attached structure that was once, during the early to mid twentieth century, a country store. This room is now a catchall ---- studio, shop, reading room, bedroom, Franklin stove, etc. The house is attached to its own harbor frontage by a path to the front and left of the house, under apple, pear and cherry trees. The Island has a fine white sand beach, a fresh water swimming quarry, miles of hiking trails, a beautifully restored lighthouse, and sailing and boating activities. There is one small grocery store, TIMS, which somehow manages to have everything, with a takeout restaurant attached (adjacent field has picnic tables). Once the home of an indigenous Indian tribe the Island was settled by Col. James Swan, a Revolutionary War figure. There is a wonderful school, two fire stations with trained emergency personnel, a day care center and a health center. Several small shops with locally made goods are scattered around the Island, there is a large library with a media center, (always has a full schedule of activities including classes, lectures, kid activities, exhibits, etc.), and don't miss a visit to the Saturn Press next door which ships its handmade cards and other materials worldwide. During summer months there is a community breakfast every Sunday morning, and constant activities --- dances, plays, art walk, and every August the Sweet Chariot Music Festival ( There is a Town Office which houses the Post Office, The Police Office, the Town Fathers and the Town Clerk. You can get more info on the Island through Google.

We had a great time, first ofall the people on the island, they all took care of us,any questions we had to the history of the island, the house is great, the lobster fresh & wonderful. love to go back again.thank you Tonges Family
The island was beautiful and we found sone fun spots to explore in the trails. The ferry was probably the worst part with not knowing exactly how it worked even though we had tickets for the whole week. The part about needing reservations was not clear on the ferry site. Wesley was an amazing host. I spoke with him on the phone upon arrival and he kindly let me know where everything was. He even let us put two lobsters from the warf on his tab which was very generous. We got to cook our first lobsters! It was a beautiful location and we loved our stay. Only downside was we couldnt launch the kayaks nearby so we didnt use them. The warf wouldnt allow us to use their dock. We spent half our time at Acadia during the day and came back each evening, except for one day when we stayed on the island. Wonderful location to get away somewhere quiet.
This property was just perfect for one of our annual Maine getaways. The house was very comfortable, and well appointed. Since there are no restaurants on the island we were able to prepare our own meals easily in the well stocked kitchen.
There aren't enough adjectives to describe the island... perfect for a relaxing week away. Many places to explore and visit.
This was by far the best home I've ever rented on VRBO. Where to begin, the location can't be beat...the owner so nice and responsive. The view from the deck of the bay, the quiet as we watched the lobstermen and a home filled of driftwood and treasures from the sea; I almost didn't want to leave a review because I don't want to share my week with anyone else except my friends and family. A million thank yous Wes and Juan!!!
We loved the remote and beautiful setting of this unique and welcoming home! Being able to explore the wharfs, the forest, a lighthouse (!), and the serene, quiet neighborhood of Swan’s Island was really the magical escape that we needed for a relaxing vacation. Wesley was very responsive and generous with information about his home, and we felt safe and comfortable throughout our stay. Be aware when planning that there is just one small general store on the island and visiting Mt Desert Island requires a ferry ride between about 6am - 6pm. You need a car to get to and from although hikes are right outside your door once you’re there.
Our trip was wonderful. This island is so special, one of the most peaceful and hospitable places we've ever been. And the cottage made our stay comfortable and easy. We'll remember this trip for a lifetime.
This was our second time staying at this property. Swans island is amazing as usual. This is a place to unwind and get away from the hustle and bustle. The home is lovely, with so much preserved character and history. Thank you Wesley!
The house was an old island home full of interesting nautical art.
With lots of artifacts and photos, surrounded by a beautiful deck with lots of large doors/windows. My imagination was activated like a child's and left me wanting to know more of those who had lived there. Thanks for your help and accommodation Wesley
Wesley and the local property contact, Lisa, were easy to reach and extremely pleasant.
The house was furnished comfortably, and we felt immediately at home. Beautiful view from the large living room and master bedroom windows. There were many fragile art pieces on display that could make it difficult for families with young children to relax.
needs updated beds husband is 6'5 and we had to put a mattress on the floor..

I can only assure future guests reading this that the mattresses, two full and one queen are new, very expensive, and amazingly comfortable for normal sized-people. I'm sorry and dismayed that the only negative review in the history of renting my house came from a family member who I wish had called and mentioned it privately so that I could make recommendations. I certainly hope you enjoyed the house otherwise.
We had a great time on Swan's Island, everyone is very friendly. Watching the lobster boats come and go from the deck provided relaxing entertainment throughout our stay. The house was clean and the beds very comfortable. The weather was perfect and we took the opportunity to go hiking, biking, kayaking and swimming. Fresh lobster, scallops and clams!
Couldn't be happier with our stay - Will definitely be back!
We were blown away by this beautiful property overlooking Kent’s wharf on Swans Island. This was our first visit to Maine and we are so glad we chose Swans Island instead of somewhere near Bar Harbor. There are only around 300 residents this time of year and it felt so private and special. Everyone we did meet was incredibly warm and welcoming. Our dogs loved being there and immediately seemed at peace. We spent an amazing October day at Fine Sand beach. We were the only ones and it was magical. Today we did not want to leave. What a special place. We will be back. We now have a little space in our hearts where Swans Island will remain. Thank you for sharing your warm home with us.

Beyond our expectations!!!!
The West Lee Cottage was absolutely one of the most beautiful places that I have stayed. The moment that I booked this place, I knew it would be special. I received a "welcome Letter" from the owner that told us in detail about the cottage and the area. The unique décor in the house made it feel like an adventure each time I entered a different room. My favorite room in the cottage was the screened porch. We ate all of our meals out there while listening to the lobster boats and the birds singing in the distance. The views from the decks was breathtaking from the early morning fog to the vibrant sunsets. One morning the water was so calm it appeared as if the seagulls were dancing on ice. I recommended this cottage to anyone that is looking for a captivating retreat that provides you with the upmost sense of tranquility.

Sue: I'm humbled by your review. Thank you. This has been my June retreat for 30 years and, of course, I feel the same way. It's so gratifying to share it with people who understand.

Wonderful place with interesting decor
It was close to a lobster place! So you could get fresh lobster right off the boat.

Perfect Maine Cottage
The perfect cottage for a relaxing trip to the Maine Coast. We stayed at the house for five nights with another couple. We had plenty of space and privacy. Fabulous accommodations. The house has everything you could possibly need and an amazing history. The island itself is full of charm and wonderful people. I can’t wait to return for another stay.
