The Whio Retreat offers a step back in time to a charming stay in the heart of Tūrangi - a rural river town renowned as the 'Fly-Fishing capital of the world'. With abundant outdoor and natural activities in the area, Tūrangi is a hidden gem.

Whether you enjoy getting out on the river, slopes, hiking trails, or lake, or simply kicking back by the pool or in the hot tub with a book- The Whio Retreat has something for everyone.

Local Attractions; 5 minute walk to the Tongariro River, 10/20 min walk to local cafes and restaurants/supermarket, 20/40 mins drive to The Tongariro Crossing start points, 60 mins drive to Tūroa Ski Field, 45 mins drive to Taupō.

The Whio Retreat is a 4-bedroom, 3.5 bathroom private residence with room to sleep parties up to 8 people + your furry companion. An extensively renovated 1970's home that has been lovingly restored to keep in line with it's era.

Relax in the two fireplace-lit living rooms, enjoy a game on the pool table, cook up a storm in the large, fully equipped kitchen and barbeque, or soak up some rays by the private pool or in the spa pool, and finish with a drink next to the outdoor fireplace, with the birdsong of the bush for ambience.

We have equipped our space with plenty of amenites to give you an unforgettable and comfortable experience. From complimentary toiletries in the bathrooms, to ultra-fast fibre broadband available through the house.

Each bedroom has a closet and mirror to hang your things, comfortable beds and extra blankets + USB ported multiboards.

Our laundry is equipped to wash clean and dry your outdoor gear with a special wader/ski gear drying closet, washer and dryer, and dedicated side entrance, post hike or fishing trip for a mess free transition.

We want you to be able to bring the family pooch with you, so we've provided a pet bed and bowls for their comfort. There is a fenced and locked garden area at the back of the property if you'd like to give them a dedicated space. Dogs MUST be fully housetrained and well behaved, please.

The outdoor space is perfectly catered to enjoy- with a large (hot) jacuzzi and unheated pool available year-round, a stone outdoor fireplace, a BBQ grill with tools, and a 6-seater outdoor table. Grab the bean bags and a drink and kick back! Please Note: We do not have instant book switched on as we want to ensure our property is the best fit for you before you book. Family snow trip

Great place for our family with older kids and their partners. Close to the mountain for our snow trip. Lots of spaces to chill and the hot tub and 2 fire places were awesome after a day at the snow.

We stayed here while we walked the Tongariro crossing. The place was perfect for the u of us. Plenty of toiles, showers with plenty of got water, a spa that was perfect after the walk.It was nice to be able to leave our rubbish and recycling for the cleaner to take away as this is often a hastle.Thanks fpr the well set up house.

Positives: Good communication until the end (see below), roomy living areas, washer/dryer, kitchen/appliances, array of pantry items, hot tub, location (quiet lane in a quiet neighborhood near market/gas/restaurants/pharmacy), near the river, and about half an hour to Tongariro park.Cons: Although some things were in OK condition, lots that were worn/broken/falling apart (curtains, brickwork around the pool, stained chair seats, etc.) and some areas weren’t well cleaned. Some specific issues: a few windows had screens but the house needs way more as it’s stuffy and we didn’t want to open non-screened windows and have bugs come in (fans are provided, but that doesn’t provide fresh cool air); no patio furniture by pool; some products nearly empty (dish soap, body wash); dishwasher racks loose; burnt out light bulb in one of the bedrooms; lights stopped working in a portion of the house, so I messaged hosts but did not get a response (we looked for the breaker panel but couldn’t find it), yet the next day I received what seemed like an automated check-out instructions message, with no mention of the problem I had reached out about. The master bedroom is large, but the other bedrooms are pretty small and cramped; they would probably be fine for kids or for adults with very little luggage, but for couples, there isn’t enough room to comfortably move around, much less be able to have a suitcase open.

Just Fabulous

This is a great place to stay, right in Turangi and a 15 minute walk to town and supermarket. The house has everything you need, including two bathrooms upstairs ( one ensuit), two seperate lounges downstairs, large dining table which was great for dinners (when it rained and could not use the outside table) and game playing. The pool table was a great bonus and kept the kids entertained as well as the pool and spa. The kitchen had everything you need, plus more. Ruby is a great host and answered any questions in had in a timely manner. Highly recommend this little gem.

We have both vacationed in Turangi since a young age, it truly is a hidden gem that boasts beautiful, serence landscapes with fun outdoor activities and friendly locals.

What makes this property unique

When we purchased this wonderful 1970's architect designed home, it as clear it needed someone like us to bring it back to life. We poured our heart and effort into Whio Retreat and have honoured the Mid-Centery Modern theme + updated a lot of the house, to provide a charming escape back in time with the comfort of 'mod-cons'!
