Such a lovely place!

We had a delightful time in this well-appointed, clean and comfortable cabin. Ruth and Scott were most welcoming, the grounds were gorge, and the island just what we needed. The queen bed was comfy, shower had good pressure, the hot tub was clean and well maintained, there was a good selection of movies and TV options, WiFi was solid, and the kitchen had what we needed.

Lovely locarion

We enjoyed our stay at this delightful cabin. The island was interesting to investigate. The futon was a little uncomfortable as a sofa though. Perhaps a hide-a-bed? The owners were delightful and very helpful. It was the perfect spot for a quiet "getaway". We enjoyed the bakery on the other side of the bridge for a treat and the drive-thru coffee stand. We will be back sometime.

Another great stay at Huckleberry Cabin

We had a lovely long weekend at the cabin on Harstine. It was our second stay. We brought our dog this time. We had a great time visiting local state parks with her and relaxing and cooking in the cabin. There are so many small details that make this cabin homey. Ruth and Scott are very communicative and you can tell they take a lot of pride in their property.

Best part? All of it!

Our stay at the Huckleberry Cabin was exactly what we needed: mini adventures on property tucked into magical woods filled with hidden treasures and animals - domestic and wild alike! Our hosts were above and beyond! The only problem was when my son (9) announced we must move from the big city and live in the woods. Maybe someday... in the meantime, we'll return to Huckleberry Cabin again and again!

Cozy Cabin Retreat

We enjoyed the most wonderful week at the Huckleberry Cabin. We love the peaceful surroundings, the porch swing, the hammocks, the hot tub nestled in a lovely garden, the many beautiful artistic touches on the property. We were able to really relax. The hosts provided everything we needed to make a fire in the fire pit, so we relaxed by the fire and ate our messy, delicious S'mores. We loved the sandwiches and ice cream at the nearby Olympic Bakery. Each day we found a beautiful new place to go hiking. Day trips to Gig Harbor and Poulsbo rounded out our trip. The cabin is small but oh so cozy! Highly recommend!

Just wonderful!

We had a fantastic time. The owners have provided so many wonderful amenities throughout the property. The cabin sits on acres of natural forest filled with trails with fun locations throughout furnished with chairs, hammocks, etc. Closer to the cabin there is a well-kept yard area with a fire pit, patio furniture, and more. The owners could not have been nicer or more welcoming. We also appreciated the wi-fi access that allowed us to map out travel plans on our phones and to watch a movie when we felt more like staying in at night. It was our first time visiting but it will not be the last -- we can't wait to return!

Cozy Cabin Comfort

This cute little cabin was perfect for our anniversary getaway. We enjoyed the private, outdoor hot tub even when it rained on us. We relaxed on a covered, cushioned outdoor swing as well as on indoor couch. The kitchenette was sufficient for basic needs, and our family appreciated that we had wifi in case of emergency. The cabin is surrounded by wild trails in the woods around the property with several benches and sitting areas set up. We didn’t bring our kids but *I* enjoyed the gnome trail. There were many amenities we did not have time to use. The crafty decor and welcoming details were appreciated. The owner’s house is right there but strategically partitioned off so only the driveway in and out is exposed. We only saw the owners once when we had a quick request for a kitchen utensil we forgot and once for a surprise berry coffeecake delivered fresh from the oven at checkout time. We look forward to reserving another visit.

About the host

Hosted by Ruth Nisco and Scott Lowry

Host profile image
We’re Scott and Ruth—creators, explorers, and lovers of the simple joys found in nature. Life on Harstine Island is our dream come true, and we’re excited to share a slice of it with you.

Scott is a true Pacific Northwest native and a proud UW grad. After a long career at Boeing (with a few adventures as a firefighter, scuba diver, and arguably the best barista you’ll ever meet), he’s now happiest blazing new trails through the forest or cheering on his beloved Seahawks.

Ruth was born in Hawaii and has lived on both coasts, but it’s here in the mossy woods of Harstine Island that she feels most inspired. A recent graduate in graphic design, she finds creativity everywhere—in the trees, the garden, and the peaceful rhythm of island life.

Together, we’ve poured our hearts into creating a homestead that celebrates nature, simplicity, and beauty. Hosting guests in our cozy forest cabin is one of our favorite parts of island life. Whether you're here to unwind, explore, or just listen to the rain on the cedars, we hope you’ll feel welcomed and restored.

Why they chose this property

We were drawn to Harstine Island for its quiet beauty, towering trees, and the sense of peace that’s hard to find anywhere else. The forest feels alive here—full of birdsong, winding trails, and the salty breeze from nearby Puget Sound. It’s a place where time slows down, and nature takes the lead.

This part of the South Sound offers the perfect mix of seclusion and connection. We love being surrounded by wildlife, with eagles overhead and deer passing through, yet still close enough to explore charming towns, state parks, and the breathtaking beauty of the Olympic Peninsula.

Harstine Island has a truly special spirit, and we knew right away it was where we wanted to build a home, create, and welcome others to experience its magic.

What makes this property unique

Escape the stress of the big city and step into a lush, green island paradise where mossy ferns and towering cedar, maple, and hemlock trees create a magical forest setting. Nestled on Harstine Island, our cozy cabin sits on a peaceful homestead bursting with wild huckleberries, blooming gardens, and meandering trails perfect for exploring with your family—including horses, dogs, and our friendly cat.

Just a short walk away, the beach along Puget Sound invites you to fish, clam, or simply watch the tides change while surrounded by local wildlife—deer, birds, and curious creatures that make this place feel truly enchanted. After a day of hiking nearby state parks, boating, or visiting farmers markets, relax in one of our outdoor hammocks or by the firepit, sharing stories over a campfire or a BBQ dinner.

Inside, you’ll find a clean, comfortable, and thoughtfully organized cabin filled with unique artwork and handcrafted woodwork that adds warmth and charm to your stay. Stay connected with WiFi, Dish TV, and Netflix, or unplug entirely—either way, the quiet serenity of the island welcomes you.

Families love our kid-friendly touches, including games, a treehouse, and whimsical gnomes and fairies tucked throughout the property. Plus, we’re pet-friendly, so your furry friends can share in the adventure.

Conveniently located just a bridge away from the mainland and within easy reach of Seattle and Portland, our retreat offers the perfect blend of peaceful island living and access to exciting local attractions like casinos, boating, canoeing, and hiking.

Whether you’re here for quiet reflection, outdoor fun, or quality time with loved ones, our cabin on Harstine Island is a unique and enchanting getaway you won’t forget.
