About Mike and Karen Shields
We are Floridians and Georgians that fell in love with the serenity of the mountains and Lake Nantahala - its an undiscovered gem - beautiful and peaceful.
Mike and Karen Shields purchased this House in 2003
Why Mike and Karen Shields chose Topton
The location is unique, high elevation , clear clean lake, national forests surrounds half the lake, not a lot of boat traffic, close to whitewater rafting and hiking areas. There are very few pest bugs at this elevation. It is always 10 degrees cooler than Atlanta!
What makes this House unique
Lakefront with private boat dock. Love the ability to canoe around the cove area. The living room has a wall of glass and the minute you walk into the house there is a view of lake and mountains ,,, the water front is serene and unspoiled , not a lot of commercial areas yet not isolated . You have access to gravel roads for a great walk around the lake front for miles. There is a hidden waterfall across the lake - we enjoy boating there and walking the path to the falls, taking a swim in the brisk mountain water.

Everything was just great!
We found everything we needed,
beautiful house, great location, great views!
Thank you Olga so glad you enjoyed the holidays at our vacation home Driftwood Cove Lake Nantahala
Great fall visit
Really enjoyed our time on the lake as the trees were turning colors. Very beautiful and quiet this time of the year. Property was in great shape and very accommodating for our 2 families.
One of my favorite rentals
This is the second time we’ve stayed on this property. The house is clean, well-equipped, and the owners are helpful and communicative. The location of this house on Lake Nantahala is also pretty prefect. From here one can easily canoe to both ends of the lake. Across the lake is Forest Service land, so your view is unobstructed by other houses. The availability of a canoe, paddles, and PFDs lets you travel light. There are also lots of beds in the house so invite family and friends to enjoy this idyllic retreat with you!
Thank you Julie we appreciate you coming back to Driftwood Cove
Our nephew's wedding was the main purpose of our vacation at Lake Nantahala. This property was the perfect choice as it was only a few miles from the venue.
The house was nicely furnished and well equipped. We enjoyed use of the canoe, paddle boat and ping pong table. Most of all we enjoyed being in such a peaceful location surrounded by nature. It was one of the most relaxing vacations we ever have had.
Thank you Lisa for your review , we appreciate your positive feedback and glad you had such a peaceful and enjoyable time at Driftwood Cove
Very Nice House
Very nice house. Excellent kitchen. Had all the cooking needs. Nice big room on bottom floor.Very nice and quiet seastng on deck and sun porch. Nice dock to sit or swim on or if you rent a boat.
Thank you Mike for the positive review
We spent two delightful weeks at driftwood cove In early August to escape the heat in Tampa. We entertained family and friends and had as many as four couples for two nights. Plenty of room, cool temperatures and great views of the lake and the beautiful mountains. Must be spectacular in the fall. We’ve vacationed at all the nearby lakes and the lack of development around Nantahala is a wonderfully distinguishing characteristic. With that comes the downside of exciting mountain driving and far away shopping and restaurants. We came prepared based on the property description, and although we missed going out to dinner occasionally, we had a collection of wonderful cooks and some lively dinner debates that would undoubtedly have been inappropriate in a public space. Take your pick.
The house is beautiful, spacious and well equipped. We enjoyed a couple of fires just because we could, but it really wasn’t cool enough most nights. The wood burning fireplace is a rare treat I seek out, and it would be perfect in cooler weather. Lots of firewood suppliers in and around Andrews.
We fished twice with a local guide with poor results. I think the water temperature (76-78) slowed things down.
If you’re looking for cool quietude, driftwood cove is worth a visit. Good memories.
Thank you so much for your positive review ,,, we agree that what makes Nantahala Lake special is the peaceful undeveloped vibe ,,,
So glad you enjoyed your stay at Driftwood Cove !

White water rafting on the Nantahala River. Choose from over 20 outfitters on the river. Fly fishing in the nearby rivers. Hiking on the Bartram and Appalachian Trails. Zip Line/Canopy tours nearby. Harrah's Cherokee Casino and the new Cherokee River Valley Casino in Murphy is nearby. Snow ski at nearby Maggie Valley. Waterfall sightseeing is within a few miles and several are right on the lake.
