The department name came from the departmental head, named in the same way. In pre-Hispanic times the municipality was known as Chinabajul, which in Mam means Entre Barrancos.
During the Conquest, the Indians who accompanied the Spaniards changed their name to Ueuetenango. This is interpreted as the place of the old. Although another theory indicates that it could be because of a tree called Ahuehuetle.
