About the host
Hosted by Gethin and Glynis Haig
I am a retired Telecommunications professional and my wife is a retired teacher. We feel so blessed to be living in an area of such beauty and it gives us great pleasure to share our knowledge and enthusiasm with our guests in our two Holiday Cottages at Cwm Mill.
Why they chose this property
The cottage nestles by the River Monnow at the foot of the Cat's Back and Black Hill: you could not find a better location from which to explore the Black Mountains and nearby Wye Valley. In terms of outdoor pursuits the area offers something for everyone, from mountain biking, pony trekking and spectacular walks to wild swimming, canal cruises and canoeing on the Wye. Several locally-renowned eateries and pubs lie within a few miles of the cottage and there are many quaint, picturesque villages to explore. You'll find a list of local activity providers and eateries plus contact numbers in the Welcome Pack we'll send to you before your stay. The nearby towns of Hereford, Abergavenny and Hay on Wye are well worth visiting, especially on market days. All offer a good variety of restaurants, bars, cafes etc. All three towns are focal points within the Welsh Marches; an area steeped in history and culture and fought over by the English and Welsh for centuries. Our personal favourite though is Hay on Wye, the world-famous town of books. It has its own uniquely relaxed vibe and, of course, is famous as the home of the literary and philosophy festivals. Hay Castle re-opened this year after a lengthy and highly successful renovation project and is a prime spot from which to survey the town centre. The endearingly quirky Richard Booth Cinema and The Globe live music venue both offer an enjoyable and unique night out at a reasonable price. Browse the many antique, book and vintage shops in the town and enjoy sitting out on the pavement seating offered by many cafes and just watch the world go by.
What makes this property unique
Well, we think we've said it all, however there are a few further details which may be helpful. Firstly, the lovely places to eat and drink close by. The Bridge Inn at Michaelchurch Escley (recently mentioned in Conde Nast Traveller Magazine) is about 3 miles from the cottage and is in a quiet, attractive spot by the Escley Brook. It's a great place for a chilled local cider by the stream, and you'll need to book in advance if you're planning to eat there as it is very popular. The Bull's Head in Craswall is a newly renovated, 17th Century Drover's Inn steeped in history which re-opened its doors in November 2021 after a lengthy absence from the community. Featured in The Guardian's 10 of the Best Renovated Foodie Pubs a few months ago, its menu focuses on farm-to-table produce. Again, you will need to book in advance for dining (open Thursday to Sunday only at the moment). It's a scenic 2.6 mile walk (or drive) along the lane from the cottage to the Bull's Head. The Crown Inn in Longtown (3 miles) and The Pandy Inn in Dorstone (8 miles) are traditional country pubs serving a good range of hearty meals. Longtown also has a fabulous, well-equipped local store which stocks everything you may need while you stay with us.
Most major supermarkets will deliver to Craswall so you can shop on line and have your food delivered despite the rural location.
