About this property
Beautiful Hay Cottage
The cottage is located just out of the centre of Hay opposite the beautiful St Mary's Church. It is slightly quieter here than in the heart of the town but is still only a 5 minute walk into the centre. It is very easy to access the river walks, simply taking the path to the right of the church. The cottage is full of character with wooden beams, a wood-burning stove, the original fireplace in the bedroom, wooden flooring throughout the downstairs, and a beautiful south-facing garden.
The cottage was built in the 1800's but was extended recently to the rear. The bathroom and single bedroom overlook the garden and the spacious double room is above the lounge at the front of the property. The bed is really comfortable and the shower has good pressure. The woodburner makes the cottage very cosy in the winter yet the lounge feels delightfully cool in the heat of the summer. The garden can be a sun-trap and is a beautiful space to read a book or enjoy a meal. There are two really comfortable reclining retro chairs to help you relax, unwind and make the most of the garden.

About the host
Hosted by gemma

I grew up in mid-Wales on a hill farm but moved away for 12yrs to work as a midwife and enjoy all that comes with city life. I was lucky enough to travel with my career but moved back nearer home in 2012, city life losing its appeal and the green green grass of home suddenly tugging on my heart strings! I chose to move to Hay because of all it had to offer, and wasn't disappointed! I bought the cottage and lived there on my own for 5 years, before my partner James joined me in 2017. We absolutely loved living there, not only enjoying the house itself but also all of the lovely walks that you can do from the doorstep, and the easy access to the shops, cafes and pubs. Hay is a delightful place to live or visit, with an eclectic mix of residents and visitors alike! Eventually, we just needed some more space and so have moved to a larger property a mile out of Hay. Luckily we have been able to keep the cottage and are delighted to be able to share it with visitors. It is the perfect base to relax, unwind and explore Hay and the surrounding area.
Why they chose this property
From our experience of living in the cottage, it is in a perfect location - close enough to the town but in a very quiet area. The inside of the cottage has a lovely feel to it - cosy, stylish and uncluttered but with everything that you need. The extension has really helped make the cottage feel more spacious - it's small but not too small!
The south-facing garden is a real asset. A friend redesigned the garden a few years ago and it has transformed the space. Despite the cottage being a terraced property, it doesn't feel like you are overlooked as the church is opposite the front of the property and there is also a wall to the rear of the property which means noone overlooks the back garden except the neighbours on either side. We have fairly high fences and so the garden generally feels quite private.

What makes this property unique
It is an old property and so has character but it has also been modernised in some respects and so looks great and is a really comfortable and relaxing space.
There are not many properties in Hay with South facing gardens . It is also nice that there is some space between the road and the cottage as a lot of cottages in the centre just step off the pavement into the front door.
