The Neighborhood:
Bayswater is well known for its close proximity to London’s greatest green space, Hyde Park. Its residents can boast a palace, lake and horse riding stables virtually in their front garden – and all in Zone 1. Its cultural and social mix, reflected in the amazingly varied restaurants and food stores that line up along Queensway, lends the area some unusual contrasts. Bayswater is cosmopolitan yet comfortable, cutting edge yet cultured. There's a strong sense of community here with a residents’ association and local magazine, and people tend to know their neighbours, a fact helped by the many shared garden squares. Historically famous for London’s first department store Whiteleys, and for having the highest concentration of hotels in London, the Bayswater of today is a much changed place. Many of the hotels are being converted into residential blocks, and there are big plans to develop Whiteleys and inject new life into Queensway. The architecture here is among some of the most impressive in London, with grand white stucco terraces and garden squares. Once here, residents tend to stay, whether they are families taking advantage of the good schools in the area, or professional couples and singles appreciating the easy commute to Central London and the breadth of local shops and restaurants.
Getting Around:
It’s easy to travel around London from Bayswater as there are lots of tube stations in the area! If you travel on the Central Line from Queensway Tube Station, you can get straight to Oxford Circus for shopping on Oxford Street in 10 minutes, and travel to St Paul’s to visit breathtaking St Paul’s Cathedral in around 17 minutes. Tubes on the Circle and District lines that stop at Bayswater Tube Station will take you direct to Notting Hill Gate in 2 minutes and Westminster (where you will find Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament) in just under 15 minutes. You could also use Royal Oak and Lancaster Gate tube stations, or Paddington Tube Station in neighbouring Paddington. If you prefer taxi’s to other forms of public transport, you’ll find taxi ranks dotted all over Bayswater. The most central taxi rank you’ll find is just outside Whiteleys Shopping Centre on Queensway. One of the really great things about Bayswater is its proximity to some of the most attraction filled areas of London. Bring a pair of comfortable shoes with you and you can walk from Queensway in the heart of Bayswater to chic Notting Hill’s Portobello Road Market in around 20 minutes. You will find beautiful Kensington Palace in Kensington just under 10 minutes walk away, and the fantastic range of shops on Kensington High Street are just 5 minutes walk from here. If you want more shops, you should head to Mayfair, where you can shop till you drop on Oxford Street in around 25 minutes. When you fancy a day trip to places in the U.K like Bath or Bristol, you should walk the 10 minutes to Paddington Train Station!
