Whitby is a haven for dogs with great walks, many pet-friendly pubs, as well as a dog bakery! The town has cobbled streets lined with quirky independent shops and cafés, award-winning restaurants and a glorious, golden, sandy beach, overlooked by the iconic abbey up on the cliff top. Other attractions include St Hilda’s Church at the top of the 199 steps, as well as the Life Boat Museum, Captain Cook Museum and the Pannett Park Museum with an exhibition covering the full history of the town from Jurassic fossils to steam engineering and WWII memorabilia. Join a ghost walk and hear some of the spooky tales, or following in the footsteps of Bram Stoker’s Dracula. Take a boat trip out into the harbour where once Vikings and smugglers sailed, or enjoy a stroll down the pier and have a seagull’s view over the town from the top of the lighthouse. Indulge in some freshly caught seafood - there are over twenty two fish & chip restaurants in Whitby, and even more pubs and bars!
For a day trip, there is both the breathtaking coastline and the wonderful surrounding North York Moors National Park. To the north is the surfers’ paradise of Saltburn, Staithes, Runswick Bay and Sandsend. To the south are Robin Hood’s Bay, Ravenscar, Scarborough and Filey. Inland, you are surrounded by miles of heather covered hills and valleys, and charming rural villages, including Hutton-le-Hole (with its folk museum and local craft shops), Thornton-le-Dale (with walking trails along the stream) and Dalby Forest. You can ride the steam train to Pickering, visiting Grosmont and Goathland along the way.
This area is a walkers’ paradise with many popular trails, including the Cleveland Way and the Cinder Track. You can also follow the River Esk up to neighbouring Ruswarp village where there is rowing boat hire. You are sure to discover why Whitby has made such a name for itself and why many guests return year after year. Beach ½ mile. Shop and restaurant ½ mile, pub ¼ mile.
