History of Glendevon
Although we're not sure exactly how old Glendevon is precisely we have a documentary records dating from the early 19th century up to the present day We know that the cottage has been inhabited by a succession of families working in seafaring and mining - industries and occupations of importance to the local area. Glendevon is a genuine fishermens' cottage The profession of Master Mariner features in the ownership records commentary - a Master Mariner was the highest qualification possible in the Merchant Navy Local Staithes names are connected to the cottage - Ward - Shippey - Crooks - Theaker In 1861 Glendevon had 3 residents - this had risen to 8 in 1871 and included a young girl as a house servant - Sarah Crooks, and a lodger Ann Theaker In 1881 one of the sons of the household Matthew Ward was at sea and is recorded as serving on the 'True Love' a fishing vessel from Whitby manned by Staithes fishermen By 1911 Matthew was in the fish business on his own account as a Hawker owning his own horse and cart. It is not hard to imagine Matthew shouting his wares on 'The Staithe' then delivering orders by horse drawn transport to local villages

Super cottage. Really well appointed and scrupulously clean. It's a family home and that love and attention does show. For a third year in a row, we do hope to book it again!
Perfect spot for a weekend in Staithes, property was exactly as described, location even better being within seconds of the sea front. Anne was very efficient and gave us all information upfront and even set up travel cot for us. Thank you for having us :-)
Beautiful cosy cottage, we really appreciated the welcome pack - thank you, the fire was laid ready to light, cottage had everything you needed and the location was perfect, we could een check in early on that day if we so wished.....will definitly book again, thankyou Anne.
Beautiful cottage, ideally located at the bottom of the village, with a sea view. Warm and cosy, with everything you need. Milk and biscuits waiting on arrival was very welcome will definitely stay again. Highly recommended.
This was a lovely cottage in the beautiful village of Staithes. Had everything needed for a comfortable stay, the biscuits were a nice touch. I did feel it could have been cleaner, it didnt really bother me but if you are a clean freak it might.

cosy little cottage
Lovely cottage, clean and tidy. Very cosy with open fire and heaters. TVs in both bedrooms as well as main room a bonus. WiFi intermittent and absolutely no mobile phone signal (go up the hill and you can receive texts then!) Bedding included but bring your own towels. Great stay for local walks and sea views along the cliffs. No parking though - need to pay to stay in local car park at additional cost. But would definitely recommend for walkers, bird spotters and English Heritage members as Whitby Abbey alone is beautiful and only 10 mins by car.
We arrived for our four night stay with high hopes. The village was quaint, and the pub excellent . However, the cottage was a disappointment. First impressions, the kitchen had not had a good clean in quite awhile. Food scraps in the kitchen sink and a floor that needed sweeping. The message board was out of date and made references to things not provided by the host. There are partial ocean views, the ad said. Maybe, but couldn’t see it out the filthy windows. Last but not least, we flushed the toilet and a horrible smell was noticeable all through the cottage. We stayed only one night because we just couldn’t hack the smell that never went away . Owners swear there was nothing wrong with the place after their inspection.
It was a lovely warm house. The size of the kitchen was anice surprise and the utility was great for putting boots and coats in. Just a few thoughts. Towels provided were a bit thin and worn. New towels would be good. Proper mattress protectors would be nice. You never know who slept on it before you. The downstairs bathroom has a drains smell but that is probably not an issue that can sorted easily. Overall lovely house in fab location
Lovely, small and quaint as expected. Very well equipped kitchen. Sitting room comfortable, perhaps a little refresh would be good.Communication with Anne excellent.Would stay again.
Wonderful comfortable cottage with all facilities you would need. Fabulous location just round corner from Cob and Lobster....need to book tables but they also do takeaways. Can recommend Dottys tearoom.Very comfy beds ..one room with full en-suite, the other full bathroom downstairs. Small seating area to front and side. Great value for money.Anne the property owner was a great communicator and extremely helpful.Open fire place and full kitchen. The photos dont do it justice its beautiful! Would definitely reconmend.Thank you
Lovely little cottage and perfect location - unfortunately the first two nights were freezing but that is nothing to do with the host!! BUT more wood would be good in bad weather. This was the perfect cute cottage and I'd love it to live in full time!!
