About this property

Waterfront cottage on 10 acre bluff overlooking Lake Michigan. Very Private,Pets

The cottage sits 150 feet above Lake Michigan with views of the Manitou and Fox Islands. 700 feet of frontage and very few neighbors afford an unusual degree of privacy and solitude. A winding path down to the lake leads to miles of shoreline perfect for Petoskey stone and agate hunting, swimming, kayaking, and relaxation.

The cottage has a wide covered deck that is the perfect spot to lounge: read, eat, watch a breathtaking sunset or storm clouds fly in from the west, star gaze or dream. There is an eagle's nest nearby and regular flybys. Track and identify freighters sailing through the Manitou Passage by phone app!

There is a second patio under the porch with comfy lounge chairs for a quiet respite.

You are close to everything that is Leelanau County: wineries, restaurants, beaches, the Sleeping Bear Dunes, golf, hiking, and the best road biking in the Midwest..... but you may never want to leave this spot. It is perfect for those who want to get away from it all. And still only 2 miles from the village of Northport.

From June 15 to Sept 1, the rental is 6 day minimum starting Sundays. For the rest of the time, there is a 2or 3 day minimum. There is also a fee if you have a dog.

There is no wifi or cable. No TV. Cell service can be spotty. There are fans in each bedroom . There are puzzles, games, and books available. Yard games too.

The path is 15 stories up and down, winding and narrow in places. It takes about 5 minutes to go down and 8 minutes to go up. You need to be in reasonable shape to navigate.

Note for guests with young children or for guests that have mobility issues, this cottage may not be right for you. The trail down is like a hiking trail in a state park. If you will have to carry your child, it is quite a trek. If you are content to be on the deck for the beautiful views and to venture off to nearby playground and parks, this cottage can work for you.

Gorgeous Spot

The photos truly do not do justice to this wonderfully designed home, with huge windows overlooking the lake, a wide and sheltered porch, and simple, elegant furnishings. We hope to return!

Mini Moon Dream

We are absolutely in love with everything! The location is so beautiful and was an amazing location our our mini moon! It was so nice to unplug and be able to enjoy everything! The beach was amazing and relaxing, and we highly recommend getting the app Marine Traffic like Kate recommends. We had so much fun watching all the boat traffic go by and learning about them. Everything was perfect for us and our mini moon and we can’t wait to plan our next trip back!

Great view, privacy and dog friendly.

We had a wonderful week just relaxing and enjoying the beautiful views of Lake Michigan. I think we took about 100 sunset pictures every night with them all being unique with the different clouds we had coming through. The cottage is stocked really well with everything we needed for our stay. The Webber grill on the covered porch came in handy and got used every night. Our dogs appreciated not seeing anyone the whole trip so they could save some barks for home. 😊. We brought up a laptop and watched some old movies, but the Wi-Fi worked ok on the porch if we needed to get online for a few minutes. Kate was really easy to work with and we will definitely be back next year.

Perfection

Another wonderful visit, and this time we were lucky to see cherry blossoms in all their glory, carpets of white (and pink) trillium, eagles soaring over and landing next to us in trees right by the expansive deck, and, as always, the beautiful Manitou and Fox islands in the ever-changing beautiful Lake Michigan. All this without ever leaving Kate’s impeccable cabin, which has everything you need to feel right at home. What a wonderful week to unplug and recharge. As always, perfection…

More than lived up to my wide-eyed expectations

We are owners of a cabin north of Northport, and I have had a VRBO crush on this cabin for years now. Because of work on our own cabin, we were finally able to check it out up close. I could probably write forever on what a wonderful little, modern jewel this special place is, but I'll try to keep it concise. Kate was polite, kind, and attentive. The cabin is tucked away in woods back behind some orchards, and perched on a cliff where you can see Lake Michigan through the treetops, and over the rocky beach below. There is a neighbor, but you would never know it. It felt like being alone in the woods, which we were. The house is perfectly situated on the lot, with the length of the cabin running along the cliff, which means that the open, end-to-end window view from inside stuns every time you walk in the door. The Interior and exterior are amazing hodgepodges of scavanged materials, somehow put together in a perfectly harmonious, lovingly lived-in, mid-century modern jigsaw puzzle that continuously delights, down to the smallest detail. Northport is a quick five minutes away. The beach below is a nice walk on a very well-maintained path. The stars above are stunning. We hope our place gets finished soon, but I'm sure we'll find some way to sneak in another stay at this special place. Thank you, Kate and family, for allowing us into your hideaway, and thank you, Jack, for your crazy vision. What a treat. Patrick and Julia

Unwind in Northport treehouse

From the idyllic approach to the house to the expansive view from the treetops, our stay here was rejuvenating and restful. Days spent gathering petoskies and beach glass followed by music and family game nights. Daily walks with the dogs revealed constant wildlife sightings and driving around exploring the peninsula was full of natural beauty. The rolling hillsides, pretty cottage gardens in town and the water as the backdrop made every drive a delight. Hours spent on the deck just listening to the wind and the waves were the highlight. We literally felt like we were living in a treehouse!

Fox View Cottage offers perfect privacy

We have stayed at this cottage annually for a number of years. While it has everything we need, we especially love the incredible quiet and privacy it affords. This year our visit overlapped with the spring bird migration, and our week was awash in bird song from the more than 90 bird species we saw in Leelanau. We surely hope to return!

The Foxview cottage is perfectly designed for its location. The view of Lake Michigan is exceptional and the cottage captures every bit of it while still being interesting and comfortable on its own. Our three grown kids still like taking family trips and we enjoyed staying here very much.

Great Location on the Beautiful Leelanau Peninsula

This property is extra special. The views are beyond sublime, the cabin mixes in a good dose mid-century.modern. Clearly it was built with love by the family. They are very generous to share it with us. We wouldn't hesitate to return. There was only one stress point for me, as I didn't read the fine print...there really is no internet and cell connection is spotty at best, so be very sure you can really unplug(i couldn't due to work) so i spent a lot of time back and forth to town getting to know the local hotspots, which was fun sometimes. But truly this is a great up north vacation house. (ignore the words below...this app review interface really sucks..) orchardsdowntown Nortport.downtown

Beautiful, tranquil vacation spot

We had the best time disconnecting for the week. The views of Lake Michigan were breathtaking. The walk down to the beach is steep- it may not be suitable for everyone (our group was fine). There is a fun selection of games & music to enjoy. Our well-mannered rough collie had a great week exploring northern Michigan. Thank you for some great memories.

About the host

Host profile image
I am my father's daughter. I am so lucky to have learned so many skills from my dad and mom. My dad was a Jack of all trades, and I hope I am Jill of all trades. My mom was a friend to all. I would like to be more like her.

Why they chose this property

This cottage was built by our family starting in 1960. The beams were built in our back yard using timbers from Saint Francis Church in Traverse City. My father bought remnants from the demolition of the church and much of the frame is from those remnants. My dad was a frugal man and reused everything. There is a kitchen counter top he made from left-over wood scraps from an archery manufacturer. Old cabinet doors are inlaid in the floor, as are many game boards he hand assembled. He used old colanders for ceiling lights and left-over water heaters for the duct work. He made the wall paneling from trees he milled himself! He also used under-aged laborers to build this house. We children never thought to thank him as we pulled and straightened nails and screwed the nuts to make the beams, but we thank him now. Thank you Pa.

What makes this property unique

Seclusion and magnificent views from high above Lake Michigan, but easy access (3 miles) to the village of Northport. 10 acres and 700' of beach frontage
