About this property

Feel welcomed at our newly built cottage-Jewel in the River

Nestled in a beautiful secluded valley, near to the village of Santa Catarina and 20 minutes drive from the historic town of Tavira and its golden beaches.
Ria Joia sleeps 4 comfortably with one double bedroom, and one twin bedroom with bunk beds.
The house has been furnished with comfort in mind and bathed in light with double height wooden ceilings, all the linen is 100% cotton and proudly made in Portugal.
Summer guests will appreciate the air conditioning in the double bedroom and lounge.
Tiled with locally made terracotta tiles and beautiful Portuguese stone in the bathrooms.
This is an owner managed property, so we are around if needed!

Ria Joia is in the glass cutters village, in a valley that time has wonderfully forgotten. For 8 months of the year the beautiful São Bras do Alportel river winds its way around the bottom of the garden.
There are so many wonderful walks to explore, and in the spring seek out wild orchids, lupins, and irises. Catch a glimpse of the bright yellow Golden Oriole birds, Nightingales, eagles and many other amazing flora and fauna. This rich and diverse habitat is home to wild boar, otters and mongeese. At night, a keen ear might discern the call of a Tawny Owl.

Depending on the time of year, enjoy a cooling dip, or a cold plunge, overlooking the river bed, in our 7m by 4m swimming pool. Find a cool place to sit and read in the one and a half acre garden under one of many olive, carob or citrus trees.
Here, in the Algarve's unspoiled haven, the night sky comes alive.
Unplug and reconnect with the cosmos. Romance, under a blanket of stars.
There is unlimited, high-speed satellite internet access, provided by Starlink, (perfect for digital nomads and all!)
Private on site parking, smart TV with digital streaming platform access.

Very nice house with many fine design details. Large and well equipped kitchen, large shaded patio / pool area w. quality furniture. Gorgeous location nice property

This is a lovely villa in a quiet and beautiful location in the bend of a river (dry in summer as are a lot of rivers in the Algarve) looking out to the mountains Angela and Jonny are on site and great hosts, discreet and knowledgeable. Good recommendations for eating out and things to see and do in this beautiful and much quieter area of the Algarve.

Lovely house in a peaceful setting

We loved our stay at this property, the owners were very accommodating and helpful. The house was very clean and decorated very tastefully and has a lovely swimming pool which our boys loved using. The location is not very far from Tavira and a short drive to a number of amazing beaches.

Beautiful cottage and gardens in the hills

We had a truly relaxing stay in Angie and Jonny’s wonderful cottage. Angie and Jonny made us feel welcome immediately. The cottage is spacious, with a modern open plan but felt cosy and warm even in December. A great location for appreciating nature, peace and quiet.

Just returned from a weeks stay at this property..we were met by Angie upon arrival and have to say she was a great host..she showed us around and gave us plenty of useful tips for our stay...the property is clean modern and spacious and is set in an absolutely great location where you can relax and just take life easy ..outside area was also spacious and getting in the pool in March a real bonus..whilst the nights are still a bit fresh the TV with Amazon prime and Netflix are also a big bonus and pop your head outside to see the clearest skies and stunning stars..thanks for everything Angie we had a great stay

Beautiful place and superb hosts

An idyllic location in the hills near Tavira. Absolutely loved our stay in this property. Angie and Johnny could not have done more to make our impromptu family holiday one to cherish. Such a tastefully developed holiday home in a stunning natural environment that comes complete with its own orchard and a special guy named Paddy. Would give 6 stars if I could.

A wonderful riverside hideaway.

We spent 2 wonderful weeks at Ria Joia and were made very welcome by our fabulous hosts. A beautiful house, cosy comfortable and well equipped we felt at home from the moment we arrived. The setting is stunning, peaceful gardens beside the riverbank provided a lovely place to sit and relax. In a secluded valley with lovely walks all around. A great place to stay and relax. Perfect!

Our first holiday in Portugal and it has inspired us to go back again, and again! Staying at Ria Joia was absolutely amazing, such a beautiful home in an idyllic setting. Perfect stay

It has been a perfect escape from our busy city life, a great discovery of the back country and surroundings, although not away from the coast and even from Spain. The house has been perfect for our needs and we felt like home during the two weeks. Angie and her family have been so welcoming! Because of the heat wave those days, it was like real summer, one more unexpected gift in the spring time for us.. Recommend it and would gladly come back there

Peaceful and comfortable country living.

We were looking for a quiet place in the country and Ria Joia was perfect for us! It is a beautiful new extension with all the comforts one would want. It is in a lovely setting just outside a small village with views of the hills and the river bed. We especially enjoyed hiking through the hills and then coming back for a refreshing dip in the pool. Perfect hideaway

We fully relaxed and got away from our busy lives here. The house is comfortable and really well equipped, even had a PlayStation! Wifi was great. Coming from Cornwall the beaches weren’t important to us, we just wanted to jump in and out of the pool all day! Whilst hidden away in a really quiet rural setting, getting to Tavira by car was easy. The hosts were great, so much knowledge and nothing was too much trouble. We loved our week here.

We (2 adults and 2 kids) have had three weeks in this lovely property. It is very well equipped with a remarkeble degree of dedication for the interior. A big plus (while having ~33degrees outside) where the pool and the two A/Cs in the house. Angie and Jonny were very kind and helpful in arranging everything for us. In short, you can book this location if you are looking for something quite outside of the usual tourist spots…

We loved our stay in this beautifully renovated house set in a picturesque and peaceful valley, but only a short drive to Tavira and the coast. Angie and Jonny are ideal hosts, welcoming and friendly, and always available to deal with any issues or requests. The house is spacious, well equipped and comfortable, with plenty of outdoor space, including the pool with a lovely view (though sadly too cold for us at this time of year!) and walks down to the river. We enjoyed the scenic walks up in the hills, especially the cork oak valley. A plentiful supply of logs to keep us warm on cool evenings. And not forgetting the delightful company of Paddy!Thanks Angie and Jonny for creating such a special place. We'll be back!

Den Ofen haben wir in der zweiten Woche Abends immer angemacht und er sorgte für eine wohlige Wärme.Angie und Johnny sind hervorragende Gastgeber, waren immer erreichbar und haben uns viele hilfreiche Tipps gegeben. Wir hatten einen richtig schönen Aufenthalt in der Ria Joia! Die Unterkunft war genau wie auf den Fotos – alles sauber, gepflegt und mit Liebe zum Detail eingerichtet. Man merkt, dass Angie und Jonny sich wirklich Mühe geben, ihren Gästen einen angenehmen Aufenthalt zu bieten. Auch Peddy war natürlich ein Highlight Kleine Verbesserungsvorschläge wären vielleicht eine neue Klobürste und ein Staubsauger statt des Handfegers – ansonsten war wirklich alles top! Wir haben uns sehr wohlgefühlt und kommen gerne wieder.We had a really great stay at Ria Joia! The accommodation looked exactly like in the pictures – clean, well-maintained, and thoughtfully equipped. You can tell that Angie and Jonny put a lot of care into making their guests feel comfortable. And of course, Peddy was a total sweetheart Just a tiny suggestion: maybe a new toilet brush and a vacuum cleaner instead of the hand broom – otherwise everything was perfect! We truly enjoyed our time here and would love to come back.

I have lived in Portugal for 29 years. After visiting on holiday from the UK, returning to live here seemed the obvious thing to do! I have always felt so at home here and now have most of my family living nearby, which is wonderful.
I and my husband run Jacaranda Holidays, looking after guests and rental properties. Its a real pleasure to apply all that we have learnt, over the last 20 years in the holiday business, to give our own guests at home a holiday to remember. We are really looking forward to welcoming you to our special corner of the world!

Why they chose this property

My partner and I fell in love with our property and the village 21 years ago. We have just come to the end of a long road renovating our own house and the new Ria Joia rental cottage.
We have taken special care, to use national or local products, where possible. The bathroom is furnished with a beautiful grey stone mined in Portugal. We made a trip to the factory, in the middle of the country, to choose and purchase it. All the rest of the house has locally made and widely renowned Sta. Catarina (6 km away) terracotta floor tiles.
We purchased all the linen and towels in Vila Real Sto. Antonio. This large town is the centre for linen sales in the Algarve, all of the produce is made in Portugal and shipped to all corners of the globe. We are very proud that our linen and beach and bathroom towels are all of such great quality.
You may hear a mention of Paddi in the reviews, hes our little, two year old, friendly dog. Guests have asked if they can take him home in their suitcase! He likes to say hello, but lives with us.
We all look forward to meeting you.

What makes this property unique

There is a wonderful peace to our valley. I call it 'the land that time forgot'! Once here it's possible to leave any schedules and time concerns behind. For travellers who would like to benefit from some local knowledge, we are on hand to answer any questions or suggest a great day out. Algarve's beautiful beaches are a 20 minute drive from Ria Joia, Zoomarine and water parks are 40 minutes away. For those who don't wish to leave the area, there are many hiking trails and local swimming holes to explore.
