About this property
Recanto das Florenças (3) – Stone House
This beautiful stone property, fully restored in 2019, sits in a peaceful rural location called Florenças, a small parish within Calheta, on the southwest region of the island, and has the most amazing panoramic ocean and mountains views. If you’re a nature lover and wish to get away from the busy, noisy and stressful life of the cities, Recanto das Florenças holiday houses offers you a great opportunity to relax and have a romantic or family holiday break, next to the mountains and the beach “at the same time”. The cottage was kept with its original Madeiran style, maintaining the same elegance and comfort properties that it always had before. With a vast garden, filled with flowers and a beautiful lawn, you will be able to enjoy the most incredible sunrises and sunsets. It is within the very quiet, calm and peaceful small village of Florenças that you will feel like being part of a paradise. Agriculture is still a big characteristic of Florencas environment and, of course, its very own helpful and friendly people, that still take care of their lands, growing their own vegetable, herbs & fruits, everyday! You couldn’t ask for better neighbors!
Recanto das Florenças consists of 3 “joint” houses but with completely separated entrance and parking. House n.º 1 is a two bedroom/two bathroom apartment and house n.º 2 is a one bedroom/one bathroom one, and this one with 1 bedroom / bathroom. Fully equipped with lounge and kitchen, and all the appliances you’ll eventually need are there. Besides, it’s located just a few minutes way from supermarkets, restaurants and coffee shops.
The village, Florenças, sits above the main one, Calheta, where its two sandy beaches and a new marina can provide you with plenty of fun activities, such as big game fishing and whalewatching. Located at an only 10-minute car trip away, Calheta has, also, to offer you, Spa treatments within two of its main hotels, plenty restaurants (for example, at the marina, too) and a (main) supermarket. Casa das Mudas international art gallery, with its award-winning contemporary architecture, is also a main attraction and feature of the village. For the more adventurous ones, dare to paraglide from the top of Calheta’s main cliffs. Besides that, Prazeres village, with its small but fun and children friendly zoo, is also a must. Its 300-year-old church and its fresh tea herb houses and gardens are at a 15-minutes car drive away and, of course, the famous levada walks, that need no introductions, are readily available throughout the region. As an example, the beautiful Rabaçal levada walk, with its natural beauty and record waterfall numbers, sits at Calheta’s main mountaintops and, from there, you can have a glance at both sides of the island at the same time – simply, a mesmerizing experience! Just west of Calheta, Jardim do Mar (literally translated to “Sea garden”) and Paúl do Mar, are also two mandatory stopping places on an eventual trip to Calheta’s surroundings. Famous for its surfing waves, they’re a must stop place for surf and bodyboard lovers. Imagine, also, ending your day drinking a traditional poncha or even a mojito at their cosy and fun by-the-beach bars and restaurants, and you won’t need anything to complete an amazing day! Besides surfing, Jardim do Mar offers you the opportunity to stroll or roller-skate around its new promenade, a beautiful seafront paved public walk. Ponta Do Sol, within a 10-minute car drive away from Calheta (towards Funchal), provides you, besides another charming 200-metre-long seafront promenade, with many coffeehouses, hotels and restaurants visiting-worthy. Driving for 5 more minutes, you reach Ribeira Brava where, using the main island’s motorway or via rápida, you’ll be able to visit the island’s beautiful and amazing northside cliffs and beaches, getting there in a record time. The town’s church, with their sunlit sparkling chandeliers, and its new promenade, filled wish delicious pastries serving coffeeshops, is another must-stop place and, Funchal, the island’s capital city, within a 30-minutes-away drive, makes this island a more than a pleasure to visit.

We really enjoyed our stay here.
It is a charming little mountain house in a very rustic setting. It had all the modern amenities but has kept its old world charm.
It is well equipped and has a lovely garden area with fresh veggies and flowers. The neighbourhood has restaurants, grocery stores and bars, which are unexpected so high up from Calheta . The ocean view over Cahleta is lovely.
It was perfect!
The owners are very sweet people and we could see the pride they have when showing us the property.
It is a great starting point for exploring the area. Some of Madeira's best levada walks are only 15 minutes away in the mountains. I would recommend having a car if you stay here.
The sand beach in Calheta is also only a short drive away, as are the pretty towns of Jardim do Mar and Paul do Mar, which are both worth visiting.
We also enjoyed the small bar a few minutes walk away where the locals come for a coffee or a beer or a poncha.
Die Wohnung hatte alles, was man benötigt. Es hat uns an nichts gefehlt. Uns stand beim Einzug ein selbstgebackener Kuchen, Bananen und ein Wein bereit. Ganz toll!
