About this property

Victorian house in quiet street for 2 - 6+. Garage, garden, good touring centre.

Swindon is a great jumping-off point from which to explore Wiltshire's wonderful countryside and fine old towns. It has great road and rail links, and good local resources.
Whether you're coming for a holiday, to visit family or friends, or for working purposes, you'd be welcome to book a stay. Perhaps you're house hunting - or looking for temporary accommodation while you have work done on your own house. You can arrange to bring your well-behaved pets for a small extra fee.
Our homely Victorian house is in a quiet street in Swindon's Old Town. It's spacious, comfortable and uncluttered and has plenty of natural light, with a big conservatory opening on to the level, private and secure garden. Wifi is included as essential.
The house has four good-sized bedrooms. Two double rooms (one en-suite) and two singles. Each of the single rooms has room for an additional full-sized, comfortable folding bed which we can supply on request.
If you have a baby in your party we also have a travel cot and other baby gear if you need it, for no extra cost.
So while there are actually just four beds, we can - at a pinch - sleep up to about eight people plus baby. However, up to about six is probably a more sensible number, so as not to feel overcrowded!
The space can be arranged to suit a variety of needs - please ask if you have particular requirements.
There are three small steps at various points in the downstairs area.
The 'family bathroom' is downstairs, accessed via the utility room. It has a toilet, hand basin and a bath with shower over.
Washing machine and dishwasher in the utility room, which is between the kitchen and the bathroom.
The open plan kitchen is large and well-equipped. The woodburning stove is here too - a cosy heart to the house in colder times of the year. An initial supply of fuel is provided.
There's a traditional open fire in the sitting room or lounge as well, burning wood and coal. Also an electric stove for supplementary heat. Gas central heating can be turned on and off as required.
IMPORTANT: Your rental fee includes up to £40 worth of gas and electricity PER WEEK. Any significant excess would be charged for at cost price.
We don't provide a concierge or cleaning service during a let. Cleaning materials and equipment are provided for guests' use, and additional bedlinen and towels for longer lets.
The lounge was originally two rooms so it's long rather than wide. Small dining or work table and two chairs. Comfortable three piece suite. Television with Freeview, and a DVD player with a collection of family friendly films. You can probably access your own subscribed channels such as Netflix and Amazon. A cable to connect to a laptop is supplied.
Books, brochures, guides, maps, games and a few toys are provided.

From the kitchen you enter the big, bright conservatory with its wooden floor reclaimed from an old gymnasium. There's a big wooden table with eight sturdy chairs and an old fashioned dresser containing extra crockery etc. There are also a few other comfortable garden-type chairs and a small table so you can use the conservatory as a second place to sit and relax.
There's a door into the garage, as well as into the garden - a safe place for children (or a dog) to play, or for adults to relax.

ON THE SUBJECT OF DOGS - we normally say a maximum of two, at £5 per night each. However if you wish to bring more pets, get in touch and we can discuss the possibilities. We have recently installed a 'dog toilet' for the disposal of droppings!
At the end of the garden there's a small summer house where we keep garden furniture, barbecue gear, a few garden toys and so on.
A small locked shed which used to be our children's play house now houses garden tools and equipment. Our gardener has a key, and usually comes once a fortnight. She comes through the garden, not the house, so you wouldn't need to worry about being there to let her in. We would let you know if she is likely to come during your stay.
There are tall fences on three sides of the garden - at the end there's an evergreen hedge and on the other side a fence with an 'invisible' locked gate in it which the gardener uses. This will normally be locked. A row of tall mature trees borders the old cemetery, which is no longer used for new burials, but maintained in its rather wild state for wildlife. It's home to badgers and foxes, which you may find visiting the garden at night - a great privilege to see them!
The cemetery is a surprisingly pleasant place to wander around in. If you turn left out of the front door and turn left again you'll find an entrance. Walking down hill you'll come to another gate, and from there you can walk down into Swindon town centre with its shops, eating places and cinema. Bear in mind that the cemetery is locked at dusk and opened in the morning. A list of timings is on the gate.

Family reunion
We used this property for visiting family as it was conveniently located for us and the town centre. Communication with the host was very good and the property was very homely. Books, puzzles, dvds, games suitable for primary age children and the hosts made it festive for the Christmas period when our family were staying. the space worked well for 4 adults, a 6 year old and a baby.

Beautiful property with very supportive hosts
Property is very well furnished and clean. Jill and Tim are generous hosts, very proactive in providing instructions and very supportive with tips. The house’s central location provides easy walking access to Old Town and Town Centre. Most of all, being spacious and dog friendly, this property instantly felt like home for our stay. Thanks Jill and Tim.

About the host

Hosted by Tim Browne, Jill Ryan Browne

Host profile image
Tim and I have been married for nearly 33 years! We met in Swindon where we had each moved because of work - I was a primary school teacher from Devon, he came from Norwich and was at the time a design engineer but has spent most of the last 25 years as an architectural designer. He has left a considerable legacy of imaginative extensions, loft conversions and other architectural enhancements around Wiltshire and Norfolk, as well as in our own house.
As time went on I changed course - firstly as a sub-editor and journalist, working on a local paper. ~Then as the children started to arrive I went part time, working with adults with learning difficulties, with elderly people in a care home, and eventually as carer for Tim's mum and for my own parents as they all became increasingly frail.
I found a new and very enjoyable way of earning extra money - I started building up a circuit of care homes, taking my guitar in to sing old songs to entertain the elderly residents.
Meanwhile back in 2003 we had bought a run-down single storey holiday cabin on the north west coast of Norfolk, at Snettisham beach. It happened to have a Victorian railway carriage hidden away inside! Tim's DIY and design skills have turned it into the attractive chalet bungalow it is today - and we have been running The Patch at Snettisham Beach as a holiday let for over 12 years now. It's on the coast between Kings Lynn and Hunstanton. You could book a stay there as well if you like! - have a look at our entry which is also here on VRBO.
So although we are only just beginning to offer our Swindon house for short term rentals, we are very experienced hosts at our Snettisham holiday home. But that's another story!

Why they chose this property

This is the house where Tim and I lived for over thirty years, at first just as a couple, then with our three children all through their growing-up years. One by one they left home for university, for travelling, for working, for setting up their own homes - as children do. We are the proud grandparents of two little half-Dutch boys who live near Amsterdam!
Eventually we moved to Tim's own old family home in Norwich - but as we didn't want to sell our house in Swindon, we have simply 'repurposed' it. Now we hope people will enjoy staying here for their own purposes - for holidays, for exploring the area, for work, for special events - who knows? And they will make their own memories.

What makes this property unique

We offer you our comfortable, spacious town house, quietly situated but close to local shops, pubs and restaurants, cinema and theatres.
Swindon itself is a modest town with old roots, which mainly grew up in the 19th century around its once-iconic railway works, now long closed but with a wonderful history which you can explore in its famous Steam Museum, housed in the old railway buildings.
Other historic buildings nearby have been sensitively turned into a shopping village with many famous brands, and places to eat.
The National Trust which looks after many of Britain's finest old buildings and special landscapes has its headquarters here.
Swindon is very well placed to explore Wiltshire's wonderful countryside and the rolling hills and landscapes of the Cotswolds. There are some very pleasant walks in the local area, and some lovely and historic parks. Town Gardens is about 20 minutes walk away, then there's Queen's Park nearer the town centre, and Lydiard Park just outside Swindon, with a lovely old house and historic farm yard, a restored lake, an adventure playground, a couple of cafes and acres of lawn and woodland to explore, play and run around in.
A short drive away are some amazing landscapes of great antiquity - the Iron Age hill fort of Barbury Castle, the Uffington White Horse carved into the hillside in prehistoric times; the World Heritage site of Avebury with its astonishing stone circle and ancient Manor House - now in the care of the National Trust.
Silbury Hill is an astonishing artificial hill built even before the Romans came - their road actually curves around it! Wonderful walking country, including the prehistoric 70 mile long Ridgeway track.
The Roman town of Cirencester with its amphitheatre and atmospheric museum, the towns of Marlborough, Cheltenham, Oxford, Bath, Bristol and Salisbury - not far from mighty Stonehenge itself. So many great places to see and explore!
