Town: Alnwick Castle, residence of the Duke of Northumberland, stands as a dominant feature in the otherwise picturesque and historic market town of Alnwick. To the delight of amateur and professional gardeners alike, the 2002-opened Castle Gardens are home to Europe's largest cascading water feature, a fabulous (and enormous) treehouse, a delightful rose garden, and a beautiful, walled ornamental garden. The castle is well-known for its use as the location of Hogwarts in the Harry Potter film series. The town's main square, marked by a stone cross, remains unchanged from the days when the London to Edinburgh stage coach passed through, and it serves as the perfect setting for the town's weekly Saturday market.
