About this property
Four Bedroom 2.5 Bath House on Lake Champlain
This beautiful four bedroom lake house is located on 1.5 acres in Cumberland Head. It offers lake access, with amazing views of Lake Champlain and the Green Mountains of Vermont. It has extremely fast internet service. Guests should be comfortable navigating stairs with railings.
The property is in driving distance to downhill & cross country ski areas in NY and Vermont. The closest downhill/alpine skiing areas are Beartown (~20 minutes), Whiteface (~45 minutes), and Titus (~60 minutes). A little farther afield are slopes in Vermont. Nordic/cross-country skiing areas are much closer. Contact me for details.
The downstairs of the house was renovated with new floors, walls, lighting, and tongue & groove wood ceilings. There is a full bath downstairs. The renovated upstairs has four bedrooms and 1.5 baths. All bedrooms have queen beds, three have smart tvs. There is a pull-out sofa in the downstairs common room.
Note: if you need more space, I also offer the guest cottage for rent under a separate listing.
This property is very quiet and serene. Over an acre of green space gently sloping down to a private slate shoreline. Unmatched views of the lake and the Green Mountains abound.
Guests are welcome to pick the apples, blackberries, blueberries, raspberries, and strawberries found on the grounds. But please don't pick the grapes - they are for wine-making.
Cumberland Head is a little known, quiet peninsula surrounded on three sides by Lake Champlain. This lake is the 9th largest natural, fresh-water lake in the United States. Runners, walkers, and bicyclists frequent scenic Cumberland Head Road. Unlike many areas, there are no summer crowds.
With four true seasons, there is always something fun to do outside on the Adirondack Coast - swimming, boating, fishing, hiking, camping, bicycling, leaf peeping, skiing, snowmobiling, etc. The Adirondacks, Green Mountains, Montreal, Lake Placid, and Burlington are all an easy drive away. So the number of outdoor sports, festivals, wineries, breweries, concerts, restaurants, museums, and theaters is very high.
The property is truly a hidden gem on beautiful Cumberland Head.

Stayed for a month and had a wonderful time. Very spacious, well equipped kitchen and beautiful setting. Chris was extremely responsive with any issues (of which there were very few). Would stay again!
We enjoyed our stay and will be back if in area. The kitchen had everything you could need and more. There was plenty of space, in and out. The grounds were gorgeous and well maintained.
Big house beautifully kept. Wide open and very comfortable. Beautiful view of the lake and island right out the front window. Kayaking right off the property. And the hot tub was awesome!Chris, the property owner, leaves you alone but makes himself available through text if you need anything. Would definitely without a doubt stay here again if we ever make our way back up here
We stayed at the house late in December. The house was warm when we arrived and even though it is quite big the heating is excellent.
The house itself is very comfortable with options to enjoy time together and alone.
Loved the office area upstairs. Wi-Fi was great. Appreciated the large monitor and printer. File drawers had some supplies which I didn’t need but was nice. All the extra blankets were really appreciated since it was snowy and cold. We didn’t realize there was a baby gate in the closet so we bought one. The house now has two baby gates since we left the one we bought for others to use. The stairs up to the kitchen could really use a rail or something on the right hand side at the top. Someone could easily fall if not paying attention. Providing the allergy friendly laundry detergent and drier sheets was a nice touch. All in all we enjoyed our stay. Three adults and a two year old. Love the gas stove and oven. Love the big screen tv downstairs.

Thanks for the great review, Theresa! I hope to host your family again soon.
The house is located on Cumberland Road with lake access. For my party it was perfectly located for canoeing the Saranac River and Lake Champlain.
The house was large enough for our seven man group and had all the necessities we needed.
I would definitely recommend this house for anyone looking to have access to the Plattsburgh area and Lake Champlain.

Summer 2018
Dear Chris, Thanks so much for hosting such a wonderful place to stay for a summer vacation. Your place on Cumberland Head was so peaceful and relaxing. The property was widespread with plenty of space with beautiful reviews of Lake Champlain and the Ferry crossings. We look forward to returning next year.

Thanks so much for your stay. I look forward to seeing you again next season!
The property was well kept and all the cabinets were extremely well labeled. The provided streaming services made the stay a breeze. The only complaint possible is with google maps telling me the house was on the wrong side of the road.
The house the space is very clean good view of the lake. It's everything that is advertises and even though I was in a rush and my kids left a little bit of a mess the hose was not bougie
The pictures don't do the house justice! We were sad to leave. I agree with others, not the place for a handicapped person but my mom was anle to visit with her walker. We loved the kayaking. Thanks so much!

Thanks, Dawn! I hope to host your family again soon.
Our family had an amazing week at the Lavigne property. The views were beautiful. The beds, couches, and chairs were all very comfortable. You can tell the homeowner really cares about the house and property. The waterfront is great with water shoes and the little kayaks were fun for short paddles. We used almost every amenity available and it made our stay really easy and fun. We didn’t want to leave! Thank you for having us! -The Briggs

Thanks for your stay. I couldn't have asked for better guests. I hope you can return for another visit soon.
We had a great week at the lake. The pictures and description of the property matched what we found upon our arrival. We had a beautiful view of the lake! The kitchen, living room and dinning area was spacious and comfortably accommodated our party. The children enjoyed the kayaks and bicycles. If we return to this area in the future I would definitely look into staying here again!

Plenty of Room
We absolutely loved all the space in the house. We had a teenager, a 8 year old and 6 year old. Everyone had their own space and loved it! The property and views were amazing! Thank you!

Great location - house needs some work
The house was not ideal for us, as we (4) adults are all over 65 years old. Stairs had no railings and there were steps at the entrance, more leading up to the kitchen, and up to the second floor. Also, odd steps into both bathrooms upstairs & living room downstairs. This house is situated in a beautiful location but it is obviously in the midst of renovation. It didn't feel "homey" because it had minimal furnishings but the lovely large windows at the front were a bonus. Kitchen is nice but lacking some large pots (for corn, lobster, etc.). Overall we did okay in the house but I'm not sure it would be a good choice for families with young kids, and as I said we "seniors" found it a challenge. Owner's mother was very nice and very accommodating when we needed a new toilet seat, and this house definitely has potential but needs to evolve a bit. Overall we enjoyed our stay - had beautiful weather - and thought the boathouse deck and yard were very enjoyable.

Bill - I'm sorry that the property was not ideal for your group. But honestly, I hope you will read property details and look at the provided photos more carefully before booking next time. I think a very modern hotel with an elevator would have probably been a better choice than a restored 19th century farmhouse. To address a few of your criticisms for the benefit of future guests:
1. The house is absolutely not in the midst of a renovation. The downstairs renovation was completed last year. The home is a 19th century farmhouse that grew over time, "unfinished" likely refers to period restorations.
2. The house is not minimally furnished. Downstairs alone there are two full sectionals (each seats four + adults), two large lounges, and a farm table that seats eight.
3. The house is well-suited for families with young children and seniors capable of handling a few stairs. Since your stay, railings have been added to the three steps up to the kitchen, and the ten stairs up to the bedrooms.

Fantastic location, great views (great sunrises). Private Beach. Great host, would definitely return
The house is big and very clean with lots of open space and the property is huge for yard games or kids to play most anything. A private deck over the water and beach are both right across the street (young kids will need adult supervision crossing to beach and deck).
It’s a great location if you’re the outdoors type of family. Kayaking, hiking, great biking, relaxing on the slate beach (important to know that there is no sand...the water is crystal clear but the bottom is flat slate). We wore water shoes and really enjoyed it.
Chris and Melissa were great hosts and seem to be really trying to improve the experience...while we were there they added Adirondack chairs and built a fire pit on the beach which we used several times).
They provided two adult bikes (biking really is tremendous here) and three kayaks for use.
I’d say that you’re in the country but it’s a very short drive to Plattsburgh and food stores, restaurants and bars...and 45 minutes (ferry and drive) to Burlington VT and we took a day trip to Montreal (just an hour drive and that includes going through the border).
The views during the day from the front lawn of the house and beach were awesome, at night the mosquitos come out so you’ll need bug spay and the fire pit going. But sitting on the beach at night with the fire pit and looking up and the spectacular stars was awesome.
One drawback is that it is not good for older/elderly family members...lots of stairs in house and to get to the beach.
All in All a great vacation.

Excellent place to stay
We were there for 10 days and it was a great place to stay. We were there for a fishing tournament so much of our time was spent on the water but it was nice to come off the water to a very spacious yard to park the trucks and boats. House was large and spacious as well with many new features. I was very pleasantly surprised to see how modern the house was as I was expecting something much older in appearance. I would recommend this place to anyone staying in the Plattsburgh area. 2 minutes from the ferry and 10 min from center of town. Awesome experience. Thank you Chris for this beautiful place and for keeping the price reasonable.

About the host
Hosted by Chris Lavigne
Originally from the Lake Champlain region, I purchased this property to once again experience the beauty of Lake Champlain and the surrounding mountains. I look forward to now sharing this unique property with guests.
Why they chose this property
This property is very quiet and serene. Over an acre of green space gently sloping down to a private slate beach. Unmatched views of the lake and the Green Mountains. The property is truly a hidden gem on beautiful Cumberland Head.
Cumberland Head is a little known, quiet peninsula surrounded on three sides by Lake Champlain. This lake is the 9th largest natural, fresh-water lake in the United States. Runners, walkers, and bicyclists frequent scenic Cumberland Head Road.
What makes this property unique
Boaters - there space to park one boat, jet ski, etc. at the top of the property near the detached garage. Please use only the main, north driveway. There is an external outlet on the detached garage, and spigot on the guest cottage available for your use. Please do not tie your boat to the dock.
There are several public places from where you can launch. Here are a few:
1. North of the property is Point Au Roche State Park, Off Route 9 north of Plattsburgh. It has a concrete ramp, and parking for 21 cars and trailers.
2. South of the property is the Wilcox Dock, off Route 9 on Cumberland Avenue. It has a concrete ramp, and parking for 75 cars and trailers.
3. Farther south is the City of Plattsburgh launch. It is off Dock Street in downtown Plattsburgh where the Saranac River meets the lake. It has hard surface ramps and parking for 31 cars and trailers + 12 cars.
